Short Bio/Description:
Lariel was born to an impoverish noble couple from Leilon. As she was their first and only daughter, her parents tried to give her all that they could, and treated her with great love and attention, even coming to the point of sheltering her from all the good things that were happening on the world at large.
As Lariel grew up, she demonstrated a quick and inquisitive mind, that coupled with her considerate charms, started to trouble her father. He did not wanted to see his daughter attracting the attention of some of his creditors.
Alas, fate was not smiling on Lord Ravenhair... as one of his creditors, a shaddy man called Allamis had seen Lariel on her daily walk through her garden, and her beauty aroused his interest.
Coming one day to pay a visit to Lord Ravenhair, Allamis inquired for his beautiful daughter. When he received the answer that she was sent away for schooling, Allamis offered to settle all of the Ravenhair family debts, if only he could take Lariel back home with him.
Her father refused the man most vigorously, and ended up angering Allamis even more. The young man drew a short sword and demanded to have his payments, or else he would take the Ravenhair "princess" as he called her.
Seeing the naked sword, and the wild eyes of the young man, Lord Ravenhair tried to close the door on his face... but he was not fast enough, and the sword point found his throat. His last words were for Lariel to run and hide...
Shocked at the death of her father, and at the evil she could see on the eyes of Allamis, Lariel ran out of the house with tears streaming on her eyes, only to stumble in an old man that was walking in the direction of her house. Looking up, she recognized Raspedan, an old friend of his fathers, and a wizard of some power.
Upon seeing Lariel crying so hard, Raspedam demanded to know what was the matter... but before he could utter the question, Allamis burst through the back door, with the bloody sword and wild eyes.
Raising an eyebrow at the young man, Raspedan wove his fingers into an enchantment, that instantly put the young man into a deep slumber, and then procceeded on calling the city guards to arrest the vengeful man that had killed Lariel's father and mother.
Looking at poor Lariel, sitting on a bench and crying, his heart took pity from the young woman and he offered to take her home with him.
From that day onwards, he started to school Lariel on the theory of the Weave and on the worship of Lucinda. To Raspedan's surprise, her mind quickly grasped the initial concepts, and her eyes demanded more. Soon she was devouring all the tomes contained on his library, but at nights, Raspedan could still hear crying coming from her room.
But as the days turned into weeks, and weeks into months, Lariel's grief started to lessen, and her friendship with Raspedan grew.
So, one day the old man arrived with a happy smile, and looked at the woman that was reading a book on his study. He shaked his head at how time surely flew by, smiled to her and said,
"Lariel, the time has come when you need to look for your knowledge. I have guided you on the right track, and I am sure you will be able to find your own way and be happy, dear... Of course I shall always be here for you, and I will greatly await your visits and your stories."
With this, he handed her a big book, emblazoned with a L and a R, and a small purse clinking with the sound of gold coins.
Blushing with excitment, Lariel took the road to Hlint, a place of adventure and fortune, but even through her excitement, some tears streamed down her face when she waved goodbye to the old Raspedan. |
