At the gates the enemy drew,
Hacking and slashing many they slew.
Hinges buckling, wood splintering,

A cry of terror from the wall,
The gates did crack, and down they fall.
Swords were drawn, bows were strung.

Through the gate they did flow,
Impossible to stop, impossible to slow.
Defenders stood firm, was it enough,
The enemy alas was too tough.

Many were injured many were slain
Their relentless assault continued again
They purged the keep, killed the lord
Snapped the spear blunted the sword

All was quiet on the hill
The old man stood watching still
The burning keep upon the sky
Brought a tear to his eye

On that eve the sky was red,
As though it remembered the dead.
As the keep burned and fell,
As tolled the midnight bell.
