He was taught crude common specifically because his father feared for the safety of his son and wanted him to be able to communicate if he ran into a non-elvish civilization, but after such a long time away from civilization and his atempt to purge the memory of his past life his common was a bit spotty at best and possibly a bit outdated, which made teaching good common impossible.
