Description:

A lean and bald gnome stands before you at a high of about four feet. With cold black eyes and pale grey skin, Herki appears to have had a lot of experience in concealment. He carries malachite embroidered gem bags and a collection of tiny blades on the left side of his belt while carrying a range of carving tools and chisels on the right side. He doesn't seem very cheery, which is abnormal for a typical gnome.

Bio:

As the only son of a rich gem trader, Herki grew up with a lot of responsibility. His father Alstone Gemtrinket was a trafficker of jewels to the surface where they sold for masses of gold coins. In his early twenties Herki was forced to take over the shop in the Underdark while Alstone made trips to the surface for extended periods of time. Each trip to the surface brought more gold to the expanding gem business, and Alstone continued his journeys in pursuit of aiding his family financially. Only ten years after the business was formed it was thriving. The Gemtrinket family had become well respected for their great craftsmanship and quality gems.

Life in the Underdark was dangerous, and this applied to all who lived there. The Deep Gnomes were constantly surrounded by evil, and they were enemies with many others such as the Drow. It wasn't rare that the Svirfneblin were hunted. Though the gnomes were great at camouflage and meshing in with their surroundings, being found and attacked wasn't very rare. Hiding among the caverns was possible, but very much less so when you were travelling. Alstone Gemtrinket discovered this the hard way.

One unfortunate evening Alstone was traveling towards the surface in one of the many caves in the Underdark, and he was ambushed by a raid of Drow. The body was found by a mining crew eight days later, and it was brought back to the Svirfneblin city. Though the mourning was great for Herki and his mother, they accepted that it was a risky business and Alstone knew those risks.

As the surviving son, Herki was given control of the business and continued to run it. Venturing to the surface became common practice for Herki just as his father before him, and he continues to travel there. Hiring many young gnomes eager to work for the shop below, Herki spends much more time on the surface than he does in the Underdark. With a great desire to travel and see the other half of the world the young gnome finds himself in a lot of trouble.

Trouble is only the start of it. With little trust for the other races Herki found himself always alone. Herki was determined though, and his distrust of the surface people continues to lessen each day. As a merchant he continues to interact with the other races anyway, but he keeps watch over them at all times. Herki will never trust them as much as he does his own kind.
