| Ask A Gamemaster Post here if you need help in the NWN world or if you have a general question for the gamemasters. | | Welcome to the Layonara forums!
Layonara is so much more than a game. We started off as a tabletop Dungeons and Dragons campaign more than a decade ago. Since then we have developed into a fantasy world with as much compelling and engrossing detail as you will find anywhere.
Our current showcase is a Neverwinter Nights version of Layonara, where our world comes to life in a finely polished persistent world which you can play free of charge. These forums are set up to support and accentuate our player's experiences, but it goes far beyond that.
After years of passionate effort, our world is so well developed, so detailed, so refined that any of the handbooks, maps, historical accounts, legends, descriptions of artifacts, creature reports, character biographies, short stories, novels, movies and original art which populate these forums can surely serve as resources or inspiration for your own fantasy endeavors, whatever they may be. And our world is endlessly evolving, so resources are frequently added and updated.
There are also years of sage advice and commentary on role-playing, gaming and online community development stored in these forums. If camaraderie is what you seek, we offer that too. Our community is as active and supportive as you're likely to find on the internet. In short, these forums are a resource for you to use for whatever purpose or project brought you here.
We're confident that you will find what you are looking for, and likely, substantially more.
Please be our guest and browse around the forums which are available to you. As you do, keep in mind that you are sampling only a portion of what Layonara has to offer. Membership in our community is free, and allows you to establish a Layonara identity to pose your questions and share your thoughts on the forums. | Innocence GM Name: Innocence Forum Name: Lord of the Forest Character Names: Dorena Abianca, Valaria La'Elis, Liasanya Whisperwind, Leone Location: Ostbevern, Germany Time Zone: CET (GMT+1) Real Name: Fabian Age: 20 Occupation: IT System Support Specialist, Volleyball-Coach
Everyone’s history has to start at some point. It all started at a scout camp in the summer of 2002. We were in Cologne for one day and I probably stood in front of 'Icewind Dale’ for half an hour. Long story short, since I bought this game I am addicted to RPGs.
Well I already bought NWN a few months after its release and I don’t regret it. Played it for a few years now.
Two years later, 2004, at another camp I started my PnP career. I bought DSA a few days earlier, after considering either to buy D&D or DSA.
Most of you probably think I took D&D but I decided to pick up DSA. It is more popular here in Germany than D&D anyways and some of my friends were already playing DSA.
PnP was always fun, so I was looking for a PW. Browsed a lot of sites for one and decided to join Layonara. Some time February 2005.
I had my first GM experience some time in late 2005 or early 2006. Torturing ... ermmm, DMing them was always fun and they told me I made a good progress in my quests and style.
And now I am here..
Well I even have other interests than Layo and DSA. Most of my free time I spend with playing Volleyball or coaching it. If I find some time I am sitting somewhere around and reading a book. GM-Style:
This is an interesting topic and styles may differ from GM to GM. I learned a lot from my experience as a PnP GM. But it is really hard to say how ones style is like and you'll only hear from others by their thoughts. I can simply give you a general style.
My style heavily encourages RP, meaning you have to roll from time to time, depending on what situation you are in. My style is a lot about puzzles where the players might have to combine like seven lose ends so it makes sense. So basically it is alot about using ones grey cells. Of course there are combat actions as well presented in my quests but then the mix depends on the quest itself. What can you expect on my quests?
Basically what everyone else says: Fun, RP, Joy, Happiness ...
No really, you can always expect a nice story behind the quest, lovely created places where the quest takes place and of course a good opportunity to team up with other players to RP.

| Re: Innocence Inny’s Guide to Quest Rules Role-play
Frankly speaking I want you to RP your character the whole time. But what does it mean? Well first of all don’t be the 1337-Dude. Don’t be like “MWHAHAHAHA, I pwn you!” You as your character has of course its own will and might differ from you in RL. On the other hand there are other things you need to take care of, such as alignment, Deity Relation (whereas a merc might not care about it as much as a cleric or paladin would do so.), etc... Checks/Rolls
Even if they are rolls the rule about RP still applies here. What does it mean? Well I simply ask you not to give me a roll 'cause everyone else does as well and don’t give me blank rolls. Yeah this might be sound easy to simply give such rolls, but if you roll a search check for example. What exactly are you looking for and where? I am just a human after all and would either ignore the roll or ask you what you are looking for. So please make my life a little easier and I am usually busy and things starting to get hectic if I have to ask the purpose for each roll.
Another situation is if I ask you to roll me something. For example you drank something icky and I ask you to roll fortitude save so you could make the roll and not drop on the floor, being all dead. Resting
Resting itself is restricted on my quest. If I did not give my OK then please don’t rest. As long as I did not give my OK it is simply not allowed. Feel free to RP in search for a good place to take a breather and if it makes sense, rest will be allowed. But then again use common sense please. Very unlikely you will find any rest in a haunted crypt. Simply RP the search and drop me a line on the GM-Channel, asking if it is OK to rest. Actions and Consequences
Well, simply keep in mind that actions have consequences, may they be good or bad. You mess with a drow and the consequences will likely be bad. You help someone and might be invited for dinner. But still keep in mind that your RP justifies it. Would your char do it? Does the alignment justify it? Loot
Well I don’t want you looting on my quests, meaning items your opponents drop. Like you fought masses of zombies and now loot their bodies. Nope, please don’t. What you can do is searching the corpses for anything of interest. Like if it contains something plot related you give me a roll and if you pass the DC I tell you what you find and hand it over. But if there’s nothing of importance you won’t find anything, even if you could beat DC 100 etc. Natural 1 & 20
Every GM might handle this different and I am known not to be a big fan about automatic failure and success as in most times I don’t see it justified. Compare the STR 30 half-giant with a STR 8 Elf. Both stand in front of a gate and have to lift it up. While the HG fails to lift the 800 lbs gate the Elf rolls a natural 20 and lifts it up with ease. That doesn’t seem right to me so I am using an alternative rule here. And don’t complain, it is written in the handbook as well so I am not making things up here.
Instead of automatic failure or success you receive a bonus to your roll, a mod of either +10 or -10. If for example I roll my spot check with 20 + 5, I’d have a total of 35. 20 + 10 + 5.
On the other way round I could roll my search check. Something like 1 + 37. So as a result I’d get 28 causes due to the natural 1 I receive a mod of -10.
In this case I will do the math for you after all. Movement
On my quest you walk, not run. See it in common sense, you won’t be able to run all across a continent without catching a breath so you simply walk. This gives me time as well to prepare, describe, etc.
-----------------
This said about the rules I wish you fun on my quests and enjoyment. As I am human and just a single person I might get your rolls late or even missing them completely. Sometimes it simply gets hectic and some things might get a bit delayed so always keep in mind that I need my time as well.
