Welcome to the Layonara forums!

Layonara is so much more than a game. We started off as a tabletop Dungeons and Dragons campaign more than a decade ago. Since then we have developed into a fantasy world with as much compelling and engrossing detail as you will find anywhere.

Our current showcase is a Neverwinter Nights version of Layonara, where our world comes to life in a finely polished persistent world which you can play free of charge. These forums are set up to support and accentuate our player's experiences, but it goes far beyond that.

After years of passionate effort, our world is so well developed, so detailed, so refined that any of the handbooks, maps, historical accounts, legends, descriptions of artifacts, creature reports, character biographies, short stories, novels, movies and original art which populate these forums can surely serve as resources or inspiration for your own fantasy endeavors, whatever they may be. And our world is endlessly evolving, so resources are frequently added and updated.

There are also years of sage advice and commentary on role-playing, gaming and online community development stored in these forums. If camaraderie is what you seek, we offer that too. Our community is as active and supportive as you're likely to find on the internet. In short, these forums are a resource for you to use for whatever purpose or project brought you here.

We're confident that you will find what you are looking for, and likely, substantially more.

Default Haugrim de’Averlain

Haugrim de’Averlain

Age: 21
Class: Cleric
Race: Human
Align: NG
Diety: Rofirein
Domains: Strength, Magic

Haugrim awoke, it was late at night and the moonlight filtered through the curtain on the only window into the second story bedroom of him and his brother Arcolio. The streaks of moonlight illuminated the blankets over his brothers feet and spilled onto the floor near the bed. He didn’t know what woke him so suddenly but he was wide awake. Pulling his covers aside he swung his legs over the edge of the bed. The house was quiet. The only sounds was a lone cow lowing in the distance on the farm.

Haugrim picked up the book he had been reading before he fell asleep. It was given to him by his grandfather and the image on the cover was faded and worn but he could still make out the image of a knight standing before a huge golden dragon. It was the story of Sir Drais, the legendary paladin of Rofirein who founded the churches order of the Knights of the Wyrm and his most favourite story. He hoped that one day he too could serve Rofirein in some way. Already he found that at the age of 12 he had learnt basic healing skills, he could set a splint, bandage wounds, treat various illnesses. All things he had learnt form his parents or from the local vet who came to the farm once or twice a week on business calls and at other times just to chat with his father. It seemed they had been friends since before Haugrim had been born. His father’s friend had known of Haugrims interest and was most eager to teach him as much as he could, and Haugrim was eager to learn. Even if it was mostly on animals the vet showed him how many of his techniques could be used on humans as well.

Standing he padded softly to the window and looked out into the night, the stars sparkled overhead in the soft night sky and the moonlight made the wheat field look like a dark lake. From habit he sought out the familiar constellation of the Great Dragon. His grandfather had showed it to him the year before he had passed away and told him that that’s where he would always be looking down on Haugrim. He always recalled fondly his grandfather when he looked up at the stars of the constellation. There was a deep bond there that brought him comfort whenever he felt things were not quite right...

As he stood watching, a shooting star crossed the constellation and Haugrim grinned; his grandfather had always said if he saw a shooting star it was Rofirein sending one of his lights of Justice to descend onto someone on the world. The light would drift down over someone wrestling with a terrible case of guilt or who had to preside over a difficult case and clear their vision so that they could act in the faith of true justice.

Haugrims life was fairly routine and simple. He had his sister Charlotte and his brother Arkolio for company on the farm. His sister enjoyed the farmwork more than he did but he never shirked his duties like his younger brother Arkolio. In fact often Haugrim would cover for his younger brother who would sneak off to who knew where. Haugrim would not tell his parents about it and would step in to complete the chores before anyone found out so that Arkolio did not get into trouble. He had mixed feelings about the whole idead of it. He felt guilty that he was covering up for Arkolio’s failings with his parents and at times he got angry at Arkolio who didn’t know anything about what Haugrim did for him. Sometimes Harugrim just wanted to grab him and pummel him...sometimes he did, leaving Arkolio shocked and angry at his brothers vehemence. Never once did Haugrim reveal what he did to cover for Arkolio leading Arkolio to suspect his brother harboured some sort of resentment against him for some perceived slight.

Haugrim received a lot of attention from his father as he grew up, his father saw in him potential. He was always reading books and was interested in those sorts of studious things more so than the other children and being the oldest he was seen as the one who would do the best in life.

At the age of 16 Haugrim had grown into a strong, thoughtful and capable youth, one his father was proud of. It was at this time that Haugrimn announced his desire to apply for a position in the clerical order of Rofirein; the Great Dragon, and follow in his Grandfathers footsteps. His grandfather had been a priest for the Golden one for most of his life before he had passed away.

Haugrims father was more than happy to support his wishes even though he knew that it would mean his son would have to travel to Pranzis, the capital of Dreger to undergo his training for four years.

The following year a nervous Haugrim opened a letter sealed with the wax mark of the order of Rofirein. Within it was his acceptance to come to Pranzis to undergo initiate training. And so on a sad and rainy day late in autumn his father took him to Point harbour where he would catch ship and sail to Dreger.

Haugrims days in Pranzis flew by, there was weapon training, religious doctrine, law training, justice sessions, prayers, more religious doctrine, chores, more weapon training and so on it went, day after day, month after month. Unfortunately for Haugrim he struggled for the first two years. His methods of Justice tended to end in punches being thrown rather than words being exchanged. He discovered that his passion to make it clear to others the truth of the words he spoke left him frustrated and he would lash out in anger at their inability to understand that he was right.

In time and with training he began to realise that he was not always right, the revelation was a rude awakening for him and the day it was realised he nearly left the training in embarrassment. But a night spent wandering the courtyards of the Cathedral under the stars saw Haugrim open his heart to Rofirein and to his grandfather. IN that time he came to realise why he was there. That he could not see the truth of justice if he did not experience the wrong of it as well. If he could not critically examine his own views and judgements how could he make judgements on others? The revelation was almost as startling as the one that had triggered the doubts in his mind in the first place.

After that Haugrim returned to his studies with new found determination. It was often said by many of his tutors that he really only began his education two years into his intitiation. He was never a great student but he was considered by many to be solid, dependable and reliable with the right thoughts in his heart even if his mind did not always follow suit. He found that the studies he performed best at where those involving feats of strength and endurance and those studying the nuances of magic and its forms.

His tutors one main criticism was his perchance to act physically when frustrated and in the last year he was given extra classes in controlling his anger. And so after all this he finally graduated to become an acolyte of Rofirein. As he left the Cathedral to travel home again one of his favourite tutors, one who had taught him much about the weave and the magic of its strands, took him aside and told him that he indeed saw potential in Haugrim and advised him to travel and get to know the world for then he would truly have his eyes opened to the message of Rofirein, to protect the innocent and bring justice and peace to those living under his light.
Haugrim took the message to heart and as he travelled back to Rilara he had already made up his mind to do just that.

The homecoming was warm, he met his sister at Casterly castle where she had become a castle guard. Charlotte had turned into a strong and handsome woman, the martial life suited her. His father collected them and as they rode back to the farm he caught up with happenings over the last few years while he had been away.

The day after his homecoming, he revealed his plans to his family to begin his journeys. To his surprise his sister offered to go with him to keep him safe. At first he refused but he could see the determined look in her eyes and knew it was no use arguing with her. Then Arkolio surprised the both of them in saying that they could not go without him. And so a week later the three of them bid their parents goodbye and began their journeys.

1/ I have read the information on Rofirein...(numerous times-hehe) and I will do my best to RP Haugrim as a true follower of the Great Dragon.

2/ Haugrim believes in the sanctity of the Great Dragon, of the power that correct and benevolent Justice has over the lives of people in bringing peace to their lives and to their souls. He stands for the truth that Rofirein brings and the ability of the Great Dragon to bring solace and comfort to the innocent.

3/ Haugrim has not mastered the art of wielding the chosen weapon of the Rofireinite clergy, but his is not far away. Certainly he has the strength to wield such a weapon but having grown up on the farm its proper use is taking time to get used to. But he will wield and use the Bastard sword as other members of the faith do. His bearings and raiment will properly reflect the path he has chosen to follow.
