New Character - Atuan Tehanu

Biography: Atuan was a native of the wealthy town of Rodez. Like many of the residents of this town, the Tehanus were extremely wealthy. Warrez Tehanu (Atuan's father) ran a number of trading ships, which dealt in everything from furs to grains to weaponry. As the heir to a wealthy trade merchant, Atuan spent very little time practicing manual labor. Instead (at his father's behest), he was forced to spend his days studying commercial texts and trade logs.

With the return of Sinthar to the lands of Layonara, Atuan's fate took a turn for the worse. As the demonic hordes pillaged the Kingdom of Roldem, the majority of the Tehanu family was exterminated along with the rest of the island. Fortunately for Atuan, he was able to escape fatality by a combination of good survival instincts and luck. However, he was forced to look on as Bloodstone's forces brutally murdered his family right before his eyes.

At the first opportune moment, Atuan fled the remnants of Rodez. Although he was only 17 at the time, Atuan's natural survival instinct allowed him to cling to life as he ran for his life. He struggled southward through the Backbone Mountains and the Dread Forrest, avoiding trails and towns wherever possible (for fear of running into Bloodstone's forces again).

Finally, he stumbled into the Swamp of Reawakening. The negative energy radiating from the swamp kept Bloodstone's forces at bay, for the time being. However, the local denizens of the swamp provided a new danger from which Atuan had to escape. Protection from the local undead came in the form of an abandoned, makeshift arcanist's tower, which Atuan accidentally discovered while running from a small group of zombies.

By flipping through some of the remaining journals and notes inside the tower, Atuan quickly discovered that a traveling wizard who had journeyed to the swamp to study the dark arts of necromancy had set up the tower. The tower had been set up with the appropriate guards and wards to allow the wizard to study the undead in safety. Furthermore, there were enough spell books and materials for Atuan to begin his study into the arcane.

Resolving to use this newfound power against the perpetrator of his family’s misfortune, Atuan acquired some rudimentary skills as a Wizard, and set off for Spellgard (on the continent of Mistone) to further his mastery of the Arcane. He is currently on this journey.

Although he is not evil by nature, Atuan is beginning to discover some disturbing tendencies in his behavior. Perhaps it is the bitterness of falling from riches to rags, the tragedy of witnessing the brutal murder of his family, or the effects of the negative energy emanating from the Swamp of Reawakening. Whatever the reason, Atuan finds himself beginning to take slight pleasure in death, suffering, and other things that used to disgust him.

His current physical appearance has definitely been altered by the years he spent in the Swamp. No longer the chubby, tanned, merchant-sailor he once was, Atuan has changed in nearly every respect. Withered and pale, Atuan looks as if the life force has been sucked right out of him. His years of solitude have also changed his demeanor, turning him into a quite, reserved individual.
