Default New Character Submission - Peryalingwe Shantoson

Character: Peryalingwe Shantoson
Gender: Male
Race: Half Elf
Age: 21
Classes: Bard/Cleric
Alignment: Neutral Good
Deity: Shindaleria
Domains: Water/Healing

Biography:

Peryalingwe was born to Kiryalindia, a sea elf renowned for her singing amongst the waves of Lannisport harbor. His father, Shanto, was a fisherman with a love of song, who became smitten with the elven maiden. Everyday the fisherman would sail out and cast his nets no matter what the weather. He would listen to her songs and she would join in harmony with his. The two were wed soon after Kiryalindia rescued the sailor from a near drowning on a particularly tumultuous day. As Kiryalindia would later say to her son, "Sometimes you have no choice but to swim with the current."

Unsurprisingly, Shanto's young son took to the water with ease. Watching him swim neighbors would exclaim, "That boy is half fish!" The boy never took offense at the unintentional defamation of his parentage and took it as his elven name, Peryalingwe, when he reached manhood. Growing up, he learned his father's trade and the songs of his mother's people. He made himself at ease on boats, beaches, and the docks. As a young boy he could often be found sitting on the docks, singing to the waves. The sailors of Lannisport always had a kind word for the strange child, and regarded him as something of a good luck charm.

His father taught him the patience and practicality that ever fisherman must possess. The means of survival had to be earned from Mother Ocean. They were never to be taken for granted. His father stressed the importance of awareness and reading the subtle clues available to anyone who was paying attention. The power of the sea demands respect, and whoever forgot this lesson was headed for trouble. Of course, Peryalingwe's father admitted that Kiryalindia had saved him from these very mistakes on the fateful day of his rescue.

Under his mother's close tutelage, Peryalingwe learned the secrets of the seas. His ocean lore rivals that of the most ancient and salty mariner. Though he could never follow her into the depths, he is capable of holding his breath for a prodigiously long time compared to most humans. His visits to the nearest sea shrines were by necessity brief, but he continued his pilgrimages long after his mother abandoned the shore. While her husband lived, Kiryalindia stayed in Lannisport, but the life of a man is a mortal one. When her husband's vessel was lost with all hands in one of the fiercest storms of the age, Kiryalindia's lament carried her out to sea. Occasionally, Peryalingwe believes he can hear her songs when he's traveling by ship, but he's never seen her again.

The blue palor of Peryalingwe's thick skin insures that he will always stick out in a crowd. He has the same fair hair and bright blue eyes as his mother, but he's inherited his father's rugged good looks. Though he is fully grown, he possesses a childlike wonder about the world around him. Peryalingwe has a deep founded love of the sublime mysteries of the sea, and strives to make Shindaleria's wonders known to those who might otherwise fear the ocean. He has inherited his parents musical talents, and he aspires to spread the songs of the sea far inland.

I'm guessing you got bit by the forum issues with "smart quotes" when copying and pasting from Word?

Try either submitting the Word document itself, or alternatively, copy and paste it into Notepad, and use the Replace function to turn all of the "smart quotes" back into straight quotes (' and ").

It wouldn't accept the proper elven pronunciation of the "a" in Earendil. Is that a problem in game or just on the forums?

And it doesn't seem to like the quotes either...

Finished and corrected. Thanks for the tip!

It's a forum issue. However, the name is unacceptable for Layonara because it is the name of a major character in Tolkein mythology.

Please see LORE reference-linkCleric Paladin and Champion Submissions and provide the required three statements as separate numbered paragraphs, as you are applying for a Cleric class. We will also need an anticipated level split at character level 20 between the Bard and Cleric classes.

Other than the technical issues, I like the concept.

*Checks his notes*

I was trying to use Tolkien's elvish to create an elven name, and it looks like I recombined the roots into the name of the famous character. That should have occured to me. Since "Seafriend" is already taken, I'll see if I can't do better. I may decide to simply use Perry Shantoson, since its already established in the bio.

Hmm... Peryalingwe Shantoson. That might just work.

I'll think about it and post the required changes additions. Thanks for your help.

Thanks for changing the name, but you still need to read the rules for submitting a Cleric as Faldred has already pointed out.

I just finished the write-up. I'm not certain what the level split will be, since I'll probablly advance whatever area I'm focusing on at the time. I'll guess a 10/10 split, subject to change with character development. Thanks for keeping tabs on my submission.

As requested:

1. I have read and understand the information provided about Shindaleria and sea-elf religion.

2. As a half-elf of sea-elf descent, Peryalingwe feels that he embodies the connection between Shindaleria and the land. As a result, he hopes to help reconcile his kin with their adopted home. Water is the source of life, and he feels connected to his deity whether he is at sea or next to the smallest pool. He delivers his prayers directly to Shidaleria, by inscribing them on stone tablets and dropping them into the ocean.

3. Perylingwe favors the color blue for obvious reasons! His taste in clothing tends to the fancy, as befits a performing bard, but he chooses the colors to pay homage to Mother Ocean. His upbringing taught him to favour practical tools over weapons. Perry does have a fascination with the fishing trident favoured by his mother's people, although he has yet to demonstrate any aptitude for its use. He admires the pattern of scale mail, which reminds him of the sea and its creatures. He wouldn't hesitate to wear it, for as long as he remains on dry land.

I appreciate the flavor that this adds, however, it will not translate into any in-game benefit; for all intents and purposes, despite the peculiar heritage, this character will be exactly the same as any other half-elf.

Approved.

Understood. I'll amend that to "compared to most humans". I'm thinking that a test to hold one's breath would require a constitution check, and I can choose my ability scores accordingly.

I'd like to request the Ear for the Sea Elven language. I will set my Intelligence score to meet the requirement.

In the future, please make such requests in the original submission so that approvers don't need to re-evalute the application.

Based on the biography above, I support the request for the Sea Elf ear (see a GM in game to get this added, and refer them to this thread); however, this means that Peryalingwe would have learned that instead of normal Elven -- you will need to RP the character accordingly.
