Default Aurora - Sea Elf Sorceress

Birth Name: Thalassa Di’Trien
Name Used: Aurora
Age: 111
Race: Elf
Subrace: Sea Elf
Class: Sorcerer
Alignment: CG
Deity: Mist

Description

In front of you stands a very young elven woman, though she has even more of an exotic look to her than her more common cousins. This female's skin appears as a radiant, almost, luminous blue colour, and her body is lithe and well toned.

Around her arms various ornate pieces of jewellery, rest against her blue flesh. They appear to be made of small shells and look quite delicate, perhaps due to their age, which you would guess to be at least fifty or so years. At her wrists, a set of bracelets rustle gently together as she walks, her feet making little sound as she winds towards you.

Her deep blue hair drapes loosely to her shoulders where it seems to fall naturally to one side, each strand shines with a similar illumination to her skin, adding to her mysterious look.

However much of this mystery is swept aside the moment you begin to speak with her, as she breaks into a wide grin. She speaks clearly, and seems well educated, though her speech is at times odd sounding, perhaps her grasp of the common tongue is not yet perfect. Her tone often rises mid-sentence or as she builds in excitement, which occurs regularly.

At her hand occasional sparks are seen, especially as her tone of voice peaks, and you get the distinct impression this elven woman holds some measure of raw arcane power. From time to time a small ball of ice forms in her hand which she toys with until bored, which is usually not long.

Her clothes are loose and sway in the gentle breeze, though they are of exotic cut and mostly show more of her than they cover; yet she seems perfectly at ease in her surroundings, almost excited by them.

She wears nothing on her feet, which when given more than a cursory glance are noticeably webbed, her toes interspersed with semi translucent skin. Even with such intricacies her overall appearance is quite striking and you feel drawn to her in some way. She seems highly approachable and she possesses a distinctive if alternative beauty.

Personality and Behaviour

It is commonly thought most Sea elves are quiet, reserved and shy people, however the stereotype is far from accurate of Aurora. From birth this young elf was loud, troublesome and mischievous. Far from accepting what the tribal elders told her, she would question and pick fault with their stories. Her rebellious nature was amplified by her religious parents, who only managed to antagonise her with their best intentions and ultimately drive her away.

Now she lives on the surface she has a cheery approach to life, living each day as it comes, she enjoys all the excitement of her new life. However she is driven by her emotions and is prone to mood swings, most will only find them mildly irritating however.

Aurora can at times behave like a spoilt child, resulting to tantrums when she doesn’t get her way. At times like this it is better to leave her to calm down herself, as any intervention only provokes her further.

Despite all her faults she is generally a friendly and good natured, and makes a good friend, if a flighty one. Certainly there is never a dull moment with her around.

Aurora despises organised religions which try to dictate behaviour. Her mother and father being priests gave her a very bad impression of Shindaleria, putting her largely at odds with most other Sea elves. No doubt this is only made worse by her current deity of choice, Mist. In actuality, the fact that she now a follows the 'Sea Hag’ she finds rather amusing if she thinks of what her parents would say. Ever the rebellious youth...

Aurora loves to meet new people, enjoying novelties wherever she finds them. She is naturally very inquisitive and at times has almost a naivety in situations others would think rather dangerous, such as meeting a half-ogre or finding out if a shark is ticklish for example.

However, while she may be naïve she is no fool, and she knows her depth and how far to push things. Luckily for her, her innate magic gives her great confidence in her own ability and makes her all the more adventurous.

In Her Own Words:

Why did I have to be born to the religious zealots, hmm? I mean, why me?

*Aurora sits in the One Eyed Harpy of Vehl, talking the ears off of some poor drunkard who is unable to leave, having lost the ability to stand*

Well not that it matters now, here I am, but I bet you're just itching to know how I got here!
So...I was born, like I said, my mother and father were priests of Shindaleria, you know, lovely waters, calm, still.... BORING! Anyway I wouldn't have minded if they would have kept it to themselves, but no, they had to go on and on about the virtues of Shindy, how we owed her our lives and all that, but I never really bought it.

I mean when you can make things freeze by thinking about it and mumbling a few words, the acts of some benevolent yet entirely invisible deity don't seem so important. So anyway I lived under the sea, yes you heard me, there's a whole other world under there you know, not so much going on as up here though. Life was pretty much the same down there, day in day out, fish swam by, hunt the fish, listen to the parents drone on about how grateful we should all be, what for?! I had to get away.

And remember, elves have this knack of living really long, so it was almost ninety years I put up with all of that before I started to take action, action that led me to be sitting here chatting you up.

It was that day, that one day when mother started to talk to me about marriage; I knew I had to go somewhere. After my studies I swam far out, further than the elders told us to, sharks can be dangerous you know, but I wasn't too worried, I could give one a rather nasty shock if I needed to, just long enough to swim away. So, I swam, swam for hours I'd guess, and I had no clue where I was going. I was getting tired and I had to surface for air, so I did, but I found myself facing the hull of a ship! The lookout immediately saw me, and the command was given to hoist me aboard, not that I knew any of this, my common wasn't always this good, in fact it was non-existent the first time I boarded the lady rose.

I was nervous of course, bad stories were told by the elders about the breathless, I always shrugged them off as old superstitions, but still here, facing them like that, it was scary, but exciting!

One of them closer, of course now I know him has Jenks, but at the time some big burly human lad approaching was quite scary! Anyway that was my first night, and it was an awkward one. I didn’t speak the common tongue back then so I had to rest on my communications with a few of the elven crewmembers. I met Aden soon after, a handsome elven chap he was, though a bit rough around the edges.
From talking with him I got the impression they were quite happy to have me as a guest, few of them thought it lucky, but I didn’t care, they treated me well, and I could do what I wanted, far more than mother or father would ever allow, with all their...rules.

I thought I had...obligations, you know, back home, and I suppose looking back I was just buying time. It was a big jump from under the sea to above it; well more of a big swim...anyway like I said I needed time to think things through.

Aden and the others had shown me another way of living. Their days were never dull, they sailed from port to port trading and dealing in all sorts of things really, I didn’t want to ask about the details, I was too excited!

In the dead of night I decided to return to the sea, all the others were sleeping and I knew I’d come back, it’s just I had to know for sure.

Mother and father were darting back and forth frantically amid the corals of our town when I returned. Immediately upon seeing their wayward daughter they launched into a full-scale verbal assault. You’d think they would have missed me and asked about my adventure but NO! They were more concerned about the teachings I had missed, some rubbish from the elders about the dangers of sharks...stating the obvious if you ask me.

Anyhow it was in the weeks that followed I made my decision to leave for life aboard the lady rose, so I swam back, that night, much the same as before. Surfacing I saw her once more, the lady rose, and her wayward, crazy breathless crew! I was greeted in much the same way as before, open arms, cheers, drinks. Aden seemed pleased to see me too! Daft lad had a crush on me I’d say, but ew... no I didn’t see him like that, more like the exciting older brother I never had.

That night I settled in for good, not that the others knew that, but in time they grew to love me, once we got over those tiny language barriers of course! For almost a year and a half Aden was my voice and my ears, he would relay what the others said and I started to learn a few words in this funny little language! Hello...aye, nay, you know little words like that at first. But I’m not stupid and it didn’t take me long to pick it up...well mostly, and Aden did help...A LOT! Don’t go expecting me to know any big words but I get by!

And that is when it all got interesting!

I could speak to them for the first time, all of them, and I was of much more use to them now. I told them all of my people, of my stupid mother and father and their Shindy loving. They laughed at me when I mentioned Shindy, I thought it was funny at the time, but now I know why.

Most of the lads worshiped Mist! Oh great I thought, I’m dead, after all of those horrible stories the elders told us, but no as it turns out they’re actually a great bunch! They certainly know how to party more than ol’ Shindy. I thought to myself, what would make mother and father really disappointed in their daughter?

*She giggles a bit and winks to the half-awake drunkard*

Imagine if they heard she worshiped Mist! Hah! Well that was just too much of a good thing to miss, and so I started to pray with the others for a safe journey wherever we went. Not that I needed it much, if we sank I could always swim, but Aden and the rest didn’t have the knack like me!

And the crew told stories about the hag and how she was a fickle mistress. I have to say she sounded much more fun than Shindy ever did. Like I said, calm is all very well and good but the same calm-ness day in and day out?! Ugh!

Oh! I forgot the best bit! My magic!

*She grins and places her hand on the drunkard’s ale stein cooling the liquid instantly as she mutters a few words*

Oh come on! That’s nothing! Anyway, like you saw, I’ve always had a way with things like ice and sparks, not sure why but I find it easiest to cast magic like that. My mother and father never liked it much, thought it was a distraction and a dangerous one at that. So what if I nearly blinded our pet catfish?! I was practising my sparks!

One last thing about them and I promise I’ll shut up! Well they called me Thalassa of all the names! Not something pretty like Nerenwene, but no! So you can call me Aurora. It’s a name Aden gave me before I left...

*She sighs a bit*

I was on that ship for years, seventeen almost, not too long really, but long enough for me to get bored. I get bored easily I suppose, and though everyone was really nice to me, I just needed a change of pace. So just like before...dead of night...splash, overboard...

*Makes exaggerated splashing sounds*

...except this time I was seen. Aden came to the side of the ship, but he knew me, he knew I had to. He had his life and now I was off to make something more of mine. My talents with magic must be of some good. I bet I can help loads of folks here on land!

*Motions around her to those gathered in the tavern. Most are busy laughing at her*

So here I am, Aurora, take me or leave me, but I’ll be around working my magic for a while

*She waves and saunters out of the tavern grinning and waving to those who she passes, who give her awkward looks*

// Just to clarify, Aurora will have a starting Int of 14 reduced to 12 by the racial skin to allow her use of common, which I have hopefully outlined here.

//Thanks for reading!

well it is stated in Lore that sea elves do not start off speaking common.

Quote:
Player character Sea Elves will not be given the ability to speak languages other than Elven and their native Sea Elven language, unless they are clearly defined in the character submission biography. Player characters must have a minimum intelligence of 12 to be fluent in another language. They do not start off speaking Common.
I know this section is a little contradictory but the last line is quite clear. Let me ask about this in the CA forum. Please hold

If this helps this is a recent addition to LORE as far as I can see as I played a Sea Elf as my very first character here some time ago, Tiden Di'Ren.

As for the LORE detail

Player character Sea Elves will not be given the ability to speak languages other than Elven and their native Sea Elven language, unless they are clearly defined in the character submission biography. Player characters must have a minimum intelligence of 12 to be fluent in another language. They do not start off speaking Common.

The way I see this is a clarification that Sea Elves do not automatically start off knowing common rather than they CAN NOT start off with common. Given the earlier reference to character submission biographies.
