Character Approvals The characters on this board have been approved by a GM and may be played online, in the world.

Welcome to the Layonara forums!

Layonara is so much more than a game. We started off as a tabletop Dungeons and Dragons campaign more than a decade ago. Since then we have developed into a fantasy world with as much compelling and engrossing detail as you will find anywhere.

Our current showcase is a Neverwinter Nights version of Layonara, where our world comes to life in a finely polished persistent world which you can play free of charge. These forums are set up to support and accentuate our player's experiences, but it goes far beyond that.

After years of passionate effort, our world is so well developed, so detailed, so refined that any of the handbooks, maps, historical accounts, legends, descriptions of artifacts, creature reports, character biographies, short stories, novels, movies and original art which populate these forums can surely serve as resources or inspiration for your own fantasy endeavors, whatever they may be. And our world is endlessly evolving, so resources are frequently added and updated.

There are also years of sage advice and commentary on role-playing, gaming and online community development stored in these forums. If camaraderie is what you seek, we offer that too. Our community is as active and supportive as you're likely to find on the internet. In short, these forums are a resource for you to use for whatever purpose or project brought you here.

We're confident that you will find what you are looking for, and likely, substantially more.

Please be our guest and browse around the forums which are available to you. As you do, keep in mind that you are sampling only a portion of what Layonara has to offer. Membership in our community is free, and allows you to establish a Layonara identity to pose your questions and share your thoughts on the forums. When you join you'll also be able to communicate privately to other members (PMs), establish and respond to polls, upload and download content and access many other special features. Default New Character Submission - Tomni Silverhand

Character: Tomni Silverhand
Age: 22
Gender: Male
Class: Wizard
Race: Human
Alignment: Neutral Good

Biography:

Tomni SIlverhand was born to sucessful 7th generation merchants Boris and Susana Silverhand in the town of Lorindar. They bought him (and his two older brothers, Jan and Cethan) up to be merchants as they were, and he was well schooled in numbers and writing. He was also taught about how to negotiate the best deal for himself (regardless of whom he was dealing with) and got significant hands-on practice to hone his tradeskill. As he grew older, Tomni realised that not every deal helped anyone but themselves, and that there were some who directly suffered through the decisions that they (and other merchants like them) made, and that the "bargins" they negotiated were sometimes at the expense of someone else. They were not illegal or underhanded, but simply forced others to sell at a lower price through manoeuvring their customers into having little choice but buying their wares. After some time (and a couple of heated arguements with his parents), he realised that the life of a merchant was not for him, and at 14 he left home and lived on the road for some time.

He made his way by trading with farmers and villages for food, using his knowledge of writing and numbers (or when that failed, by doing manual labour for them) to bater with. He always ensured that both parties got a fair deal in their dealings, and even acted as a moderator between other farmers in disputes. On his travels across Dregar, he spent some time with a merchant caravan. He was initally somewhat mistrusful of them, as he had never seen a merchant who was not solely in it for themselves. They were not greedy, however, and were able to convince Tomni that not all merchants were simply trying to make more money for the sake of it. While Tomni had lost much of his bitterness towards merchantmen, he still did not want to join their ranks and he resumed his wandering.

While traveling through a dense forest some distance from any villages he was accosted by a group of goblins. After being captured for a short while, a wizard by the name of Thandis (or Archmage Thandis as he calls himself)who lived nearby exterminated the goblins and took Tomni in as an apprentice. Under the wizard, Tomni was able to put his mental aptitude to good use, and was able to master basic magical spells and cantrips in a relatively short period of time. The wizard had a large library of mundane books, and Tomni was able to gather some knowledge of the history of many parts of the world which had previously been unknown to him. Tomni also got a good appreciation of the basic theory behind magic and how the unvierse worked (at least in his master's eyes). His master had little time for gods, however, and that is one area in which Tomni's education is lacking. Tomni focused on dispelling the magic of others and protecting himself from other magicians more than anything else, partly at Thandis's insistence, but also because through his reading he came to realise that many of the worlds current problems were caused by evil, corrupt wizards. The realisation that there were far larger problems in the world than those caused by greedy merchants was a significant one for Tomni, and (while he still looks poorly on those who rip others off) put most of his negativity towards merchants to rest.
After several years studying under the kindly (but tempremental) wizard Tomni was sent out into the wide world as a pratictioner or magic (primarily abjurgation magic) to find and hunt those who used magic for the wrong ends and to explore the world at large.
Tomni is a good, kind person who is still a bit of a wanderer. While Tomni does not disain the law, he perfers to live by a moral compass rather than a strict set of guidelines. He retains some of his ability at trade and persuading others (courtesy of his parents and on his travels) but focuses mainly on his skills at wizardry. He has some skill with a sling or shortbow (as he often hunted for farmers or for food) and he has some stamina when it comes to walking. Tomni has had relatively little contact with others of his own age in recent years, and looks forward to exploring the world.

This is a great start. It will serve you well if you fill out his background just a bit more. Perhaps a few stories from his time on the road. Maybe one or two more defining events.

Some final notes on character creation:
  • Please note that racial adjustments for players with subraces are skin based and thus get applied after getting in game.
  • Only two ability scores can be less than 10 and only one can be less than 8 after racial adjustments
  • Brownies, when selecting a head, the head you choose on the halfling selection will correspond to that numbered head for elves (for example, clicking right 6 times on the head selection during character creation will take the 6th head when clicking right on the elf creation)
  • Half-giants and ogres, please ask for a GM (type /dm Anyone here?) if you would like to change to a custom skin.

Enjoy.
