Character Approvals The characters on this board have been approved by a GM and may be played online, in the world.

Welcome to the Layonara forums!

Layonara is so much more than a game. We started off as a tabletop Dungeons and Dragons campaign more than a decade ago. Since then we have developed into a fantasy world with as much compelling and engrossing detail as you will find anywhere.

Our current showcase is a Neverwinter Nights version of Layonara, where our world comes to life in a finely polished persistent world which you can play free of charge. These forums are set up to support and accentuate our player's experiences, but it goes far beyond that.

After years of passionate effort, our world is so well developed, so detailed, so refined that any of the handbooks, maps, historical accounts, legends, descriptions of artifacts, creature reports, character biographies, short stories, novels, movies and original art which populate these forums can surely serve as resources or inspiration for your own fantasy endeavors, whatever they may be. And our world is endlessly evolving, so resources are frequently added and updated.

There are also years of sage advice and commentary on role-playing, gaming and online community development stored in these forums. If camaraderie is what you seek, we offer that too. Our community is as active and supportive as you're likely to find on the internet. In short, these forums are a resource for you to use for whatever purpose or project brought you here.

We're confident that you will find what you are looking for, and likely, substantially more.

Please be our guest and browse around the forums which are available to you. As you do, keep in mind that you are sampling only a portion of what Layonara has to offer. Membership in our community is free, and allows you to establish a Layonara identity to pose your questions and share your thoughts on the forums. When you join you'll also be able to communicate privately to other members (PMs), establish and respond to polls, upload and download content and access many other special features. Default New Character Submission - Rylon d'Roach

Character: Rylon d'Roach
Age: 20
Gender: Male
Classes: Rogue/Fighter
Race: Halfling
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Deity: Shadon

Biography:

His mother died in child birth. His father, Raik, was poor and homeless. He raised Rylon on the streets of Waysend where he was born. Rylon grew up as an ordinary young one, non-descript and hardly noticeable if you didn't look at him purposefully. Raik and Rylon moved around the city quite frequently sleeping in an alley one night, the next they would sleep in the basement of some unsuspecting nobleman.

Rylon's father had an uncanny ability to blend in with any crowd of people so well that he wasn't even noticed. Rylon paid very close attention to Raik and learned his mannersims and dress and speak and other tips and tricks his father used to avoid being noticed. Humans were his father's favorite target. Raik would study a rich family with children and learn their patterns and how family members would react to each other. Then he would break into their house and put on a set of the children's clothes. Acting in the manner of one of the children, Raik would go through the house taking what he wanted. He was always careful to take only what he and Rylon needed to live on for the day in case he had to return to that particular house again at some point in the future. "Remember," Rylon would reflect on his father's words as he grew older, "you don't want to take so much someone would notice you've been in their house."

Frequently he would keep some small insignificant bauble and give it away to a shop keeper or tavern owner in case he needed a favor later.

Rylon adored and worshipped his father and life was fun and exciting until Raik ran afoul of the Waysend Thieves' Guild when Rylon was only 12. Raik refused to submit to the authority of the Thieves' Guild claiming that he was not a thief, just a Halfling trying to earn a living for himself and his son. The Thieves' Guild wouldn't hear it and justice was served swiftly...Thieves' Guild style.

Over the next 7 days life was very confusing for Rylon. He wandered the streets expecting to see Raik around each corner. Pretty soon Rylon had used up all the favors earned by his father and he had to start earning a living on his own.

Jonny Stubbs (or Stubby as Raik used to call him because he cut off three of his own fingers from his left hand), the local butcher, took pity on little Rylon and brought him to his house as an apprentice. Rylon learned how to earn an honest day's wage as well as how to use all sorts of small sharp edged cutting utensils as he work for Stubbs. Rylon enjoyed the hard work and the long hours as it gave him an outlet for the anger and aggression he felt toward the Thieves' Guild.

By the time Rylon turned 17 he could no longer stay in one place. He loved Stubbs as a step-father, but he couldn't settle for the respectable lifestyle of a butcher. Rylon was bursting with talents of a different sort. He had forgotten none of the things he learned from his father and quickly took to the streets where he was born. For three years he would live on the streets taking what he needed to live on. What little cash he lifted from passers-by on the street he would give anonymously to Stubbs. He knew Stubbs would never accept it if he knew where it came from.

It was during this time that Rylon picked up the name "The Roach" for his affinity for shadows and dark places and his Raik-like ability to go unnoticed in a crowd. Rylon soon became known on the street as the Roach. Sometimes he will introduce himself as Rylon, sometimes as the Roach. With his growing popularity among the less desirable denizens of Waysend, Rylon is starting to attract the attention of the Thieves' Guild.

Welcome to Layonara.

Your character has been approved.

Server address is west.layonara.com

Some final notes on character creation:
  • Please note that racial adjustments for players with subraces are skin based and thus get applied after getting in game.
  • Only two ability scores can be less than 10 and only one can be less than 8 after racial adjustments
  • Brownies, when selecting a head, the head you choose on the halfling selection will correspond to that numbered head for elves (for example, clicking right 6 times on the head selection during character creation will take the 6th head when clicking right on the elf creation)
  • Half-giants and ogres, please ask for a GM (type /dm Anyone here?) if you would like to change to a custom skin.

Hi there!

If you're using copy-and-paste from Microsoft Word (or a number of compatible word processors), you are falling victim to what I like to call the "Great Microsoft Conspiracy Against Layonara". That is - if you cut and paste from Word, and it contains any of the characters deemed "special" by everyone's favourite company down in Redmond, the forums throw up their metaphorical hands in despair and give up.

But the solution I've found that works is to copy the text into a PURE text editor (Notepad, Notepad++, emacs..) and then copy it from THERE to the forum box. Hasn't yet failed for me.

Good luck!

Edit. Looks like you fixed it. Welcome to Layo!

Hi, thanks for the advice. I fixed it but I did it the hard way...typed the whole thing over again on your forum. But I will keep in mind the notepad idea, sounds like a winner. See you soon, cheers!
