Welcome to the Layonara forums!

Layonara is so much more than a game. We started off as a tabletop Dungeons and Dragons campaign more than a decade ago. Since then we have developed into a fantasy world with as much compelling and engrossing detail as you will find anywhere.

Our current showcase is a Neverwinter Nights version of Layonara, where our world comes to life in a finely polished persistent world which you can play free of charge. These forums are set up to support and accentuate our player's experiences, but it goes far beyond that.

After years of passionate effort, our world is so well developed, so detailed, so refined that any of the handbooks, maps, historical accounts, legends, descriptions of artifacts, creature reports, character biographies, short stories, novels, movies and original art which populate these forums can surely serve as resources or inspiration for your own fantasy endeavors, whatever they may be. And our world is endlessly evolving, so resources are frequently added and updated.

There are also years of sage advice and commentary on role-playing, gaming and online community development stored in these forums. If camaraderie is what you seek, we offer that too. Our community is as active and supportive as you're likely to find on the internet. In short, these forums are a resource for you to use for whatever purpose or project brought you here.

We're confident that you will find what you are looking for, and likely, substantially more.

Please be our guest and browse around the forums which are available to you. As you do, keep in mind that you are sampling only a portion of what Layonara has to offer. Membership in our community is free, and allows you to establish a Layonara identity to pose your questions and share your thoughts on the forums. Default New Character Submission - Haratar

Character: Haratar
Age: 18
Gender: Male
Class: Fighter
Race: Human
Alignment: Chaotic Good

Biography:

Physical description - hair: brown; eyes: green; height: 6'1; weight: 213; clean shaven

Hatar's father was an unsuccessfull farmer and his mother a charlatan psychic/palm-reader. Because of hard times, his father borrowed money from a small-time crimeboss; he was unable to pay, so the crimeboss sent a gang of thugs who killed his parents, burned the home down, and took Haratar to sell into slavery. This happened when Haratar was 7 years old. He would remain a slave until he was 13.
During his yeas of enslavement, he saw many slaves praying to the gods to which no answer every came. He also saw that the law was no help as some of those who bought slaves were in positions of power. Having made some friends, as best as one could in his position, he took it upon himself to try to protect them and he suffered many beatings, the scars of which he still bears. He realized that he could only count on his own abilities, will, wit, and any friends he could make to survive.
At 13, he was sold into a merchant caravan along with a number of other slaves. One night, while the caravan was camping, a group of bandits raided the travelers. They killed and looted. When Haratar wrested a spear from one of the bandits to protect himself and a couple of other slaves, he was hit in the head with a mace. Bleeding and unconcious, he was left for dead.
He awoke to an elderly warrior nursing him back to health. The warrior, Sin-Ramsha Moquain, had been hired to find a missing boy who turned out to be one of the dead slaves. Sin-Ramsha took Haratar back to his homestead where he and his wife treated Haratar as the son they never had.
Over the years, Sin-Ramsha educated Haratar in the ways of war, reading, writing, and other necessary skills to survive. Haratar felt as if he had finally found a home. Shortly after his 18th birthday, Haratar was out hunting for a few days alone. When he returned home, he saw the house buring and his adoptive parents hacked to pieces in the front yard.
He knew that the only way to fight evil in the world was to do it his way because laws only protected those who made them and the gods never answered the prayers of anybody. The only way to fight evil was to operate outside the arbitrary rules enacted through laws because evil also operated outside these rules.
He went out into the world to do two things: find the killers of his adoptive parents and to protect those who had no way of protecting themselves.

Default Re: New Character Submission - Haratar

Hi there!

This is a good starting submission - I'd just like to see one thing more before it is approved: where was Haratar born?

Slavery is illegal, very much so, in many areas in Layonara - the most accessible place where slavery is widespread is Katherian, on Alindor. A crime boss might operate in or around the city.. though you're free to choose from Layonara's plethora of population centres. Note, however, that on Mistone, slavery is more or less abolished.

In addition to the Maps of Layonara, the Handbook provides useful information about Layonara and its lands for you to choose a hometown from.

Thanks!

Thanks for the information. I think I'll just make it easy and say that he was born on Alindor just outside of Katherian (or Karthy?).
Thanks again.

It's Katherian now.

With that clarification:

Your character has been approved.

Server address is west.layonara.com
Password is layoplayer

Some final notes on character creation:
  • Please note that racial adjustments for players with subraces are skin based and thus get applied after getting in game.
  • Only two ability scores can be less than 10 and only one can be less than 8 after racial adjustments
  • Brownies, when selecting a head, the head you choose on the halfling selection will correspond to that numbered head for elves (for example, clicking right 6 times on the head selection during character creation will take the 6th head when clicking right on the elf creation)
  • Half-giants and ogres, please ask for a GM (type /dm Anyone here?) if you would like to change to a custom skin.

Good luck, Haratar.
