Character Approvals The characters on this board have been approved by a GM and may be played online, in the world.

Welcome to the Layonara forums!

Layonara is so much more than a game. We started off as a tabletop Dungeons and Dragons campaign more than a decade ago. Since then we have developed into a fantasy world with as much compelling and engrossing detail as you will find anywhere.

Our current showcase is a Neverwinter Nights version of Layonara, where our world comes to life in a finely polished persistent world which you can play free of charge. These forums are set up to support and accentuate our player's experiences, but it goes far beyond that.

After years of passionate effort, our world is so well developed, so detailed, so refined that any of the handbooks, maps, historical accounts, legends, descriptions of artifacts, creature reports, character biographies, short stories, novels, movies and original art which populate these forums can surely serve as resources or inspiration for your own fantasy endeavors, whatever they may be. And our world is endlessly evolving, so resources are frequently added and updated.

There are also years of sage advice and commentary on role-playing, gaming and online community development stored in these forums. If camaraderie is what you seek, we offer that too. Our community is as active and supportive as you're likely to find on the internet. In short, these forums are a resource for you to use for whatever purpose or project brought you here.

We're confident that you will find what you are looking for, and likely, substantially more.

Please be our guest and browse around the forums which are available to you. As you do, keep in mind that you are sampling only a portion of what Layonara has to offer. Membership in our community is free, and allows you to establish a Layonara identity to pose your questions and share your thoughts on the forums. When you join you'll also be able to communicate privately to other members (PMs), establish and respond to polls, upload and download content and access many other special features. Default Last one I swear

Name: William Grump
Race: Human
Class: Cleric
Diety: Az'atta (Protection and Good of course)
Age: 40
Alignment: Chaotic Good

William was born an usually large child to an impoverished family of living in the slums of Vehl. His mother died of disease when he was very young, leaving him in the care of his alcoholic father who promptly deposited him at the door of the nearest orphanage and departed for parts unknown.

The "orphanage" was in reality a work camp, a cruel environment for outcast children who wouldn't be missed and who were forced to labor fifteen hours a day. It was here that he learned to use his natural strength as well as his utter lack of conscience to bully his way to the top. When he was big enough to do so (age 16 or so) he simply overpowered his guards and walked out the door

For nine, ten years he drifted from town to town taking whatever job he could, occasionally honest labor but more often than not in petty crime as a bodyguard or enforcer. He's responsible for many beatings and even a few deaths from tavern fights and "collections", though as his victims were always types just as shady as he (and really, this was all low-rent, bowels of society stuff) the law rarely got involved. That is, until one day in Vehl, when he was on a particularly nasty drinking binge and got in an argument and broke the legs of the wrong guy, who happened to be a merchant who was well-connected with the Rolferen church.

He was given a ten year sentence. At first he tried to resort to what he new best, trying to bully and threaten his way to the top, but he found himself completely out of his league and in with hardened criminals with much more experience and far more powerful than he. Within a few weeks he was beaten nearly to death.

While recovering he was tended to by an healer of Az'atta who selflessly dedicated herself to be the lone healer of the prison, working among the lowest of the low with no concern to her own safety. He saw a strength in her faith that he longed for and begged for her to share it with him. During the months it took him to recover he learned to pray and meditate, and through her teachings got a sense of hope and inner peace that he didn't even know existed. Eventually he became her assistant, and spent the remainder of his time in prison helping her cure the endless stream of sick and wounded and actively trying to avoid the constant violence around him.

Upon his release from jail he made a pilgrimage to an Az'attan temple, where he completed his education and initiation into the faith. Now he is ready to go into the world, armed with not much more than a burning desire to spread Az'atta's goodwill.

Personality:

He may be a cleric of a benevolent goddess but he is still the uneducated urchin from the slums-- ill-mannered, foul-mouthed and crude and much more at home among the worst of society. At the same time he's found faith and has embraced it wholly (and somewhat desperately.) It's not really a matter of choice with him, his prayers and meditations to Az'atta are the only thing keeping him from turning back into the person he hated to be.

1.

Read about Az'atta and know the rules about clerics n' stuff.

2.

He is a wanderer looking for nothing more than to offer aid to the injured or infirm, and prosteletyze Az'atta's blessings and message to anyone who would listen. He will not refuse help to anyone who needs or asks, even a "monster" if it seems he is redeemable.

3.

He will always prominently display Az'atta's symbol and wear her colors. Weapon-wise, well, he uses whatever is at hand, but prefers none at all. He actively tries not to fight when it isn't self-defense or to protect against evil.

As a quick note, half-orcs are not forbidden, provided they were born before 1417. As it is 1423, any half-orc or half-elf over the age of 6 (or 5 if they were born after, at the moment, Apreal) is still quite biologically feasible.

I leave it up to you whether you wish to reconsider the change - this submission will be reviewed shortly, regardless.

You know.. I thought that was the case but someone in-game felt the need to "correct" me (not a DM admittedly, should have taken it with a grain of salt)

I'm fine with leaving him human though, I didn't save the previous version anyway

The character concept that you have is great. But you should fill it out with a few stories from his time in prison and how the kindness and selflessness of the cleric turned him around. What was the defining event that "woke" him up to a life of dedication to Az'atta?

Well.. I think the defining moment is there with the nurse, probably the only kindness he was ever shown and all that.. And working under her afterwards giving him a mission and purpose that he never had before... Coupled with jailhouse despair, it doesn't take much for guys like this to "switch" from being violent thugs to religious zealots (and this is based on some born-again ex-cons I've had the pleasure of knowing..)

I realize you might be looking for more but I don't really have anything else on hand and don't want to write something arbitrarily.. So I hope this can be enough.

*nods* Looks good. Pity about the race change, though.

Your character has been approved.

Server address is west.layonara.com
Password is layoplayer

Some final notes on character creation:
  • Please note that racial adjustments for players with subraces are skin based and thus get applied after getting in game.
  • Only two ability scores can be less than 10 and only one can be less than 8 after racial adjustments
  • Brownies, when selecting a head, the head you choose on the halfling selection will correspond to that numbered head for elves (for example, clicking right 6 times on the head selection during character creation will take the 6th head when clicking right on the elf creation)
  • Half-giants and ogres, please ask for a GM (type /dm Anyone here?) if you would like to change to a custom skin.

Have fun!
