Sounds good, regarding the statements at the top - I don't think you need to worry about deities too much, as the majority of the population just tips their hat to whichever deity might help them out at the moment. So there was probably a lot of Prunilla hat-tipping at the farm, perhaps some Vorax hat-tipping for combat training, etc, with little true impact on his life or signs of devotion.
The starting areas are Port Hempstead or Fort Vehl - the former has a lot of farmlands surrounding it - a pretty big stretch of farming community, so maybe that would be the simplest approach. His parents or grandparents could perhaps remember the days when they were always under the boot of the greedy port, but in the last, say, 50-60 years or so, with a change of authority the officials have been mostly geared to aid the people and not profit from them, a dedication shown in the dark ages as the so-called City of Gold used its vast wealth in attempts to improve conditions and feed the people and find help for the fields (such as Prunilla's faithful). Despite that, many starved and no one prospered.
Regarding that time: Lee himself was born in darkness - in 1402, the year of his birth, Sinthar Bloodstone, the world's greatest threat, was finally vanquished for good, but the resulting devastation was great - an explosion all the way in Belinara was so great that the dust and debris spread into the sky and veiled the sun for almost 20 years. Temperatures were lowered, and famines and plagues spread as Layonara entered a dark age. The farming communities were dealt a heavy blow (including Lee's) as the land, without the sun, was often barren or close to it. Many died, and many blamed the Dragoncalled who had rid the world of Bloodstone (a dragon slayer from the original dragon wars...perhaps just what we need now that rumors of dragons resurfacing abound), while others understood that without his death and all its consequences, the world would not have survived to struggle on.
Recently (a few years), the sky was cleansed, not just over a long grueling period of time but seemingly by the actions again of others, as it seemed to happen almost magically - there one day, gone again the next, the shock of the sun over pale faces present again.
Perhaps, a few years after the people and farms and land begin trying to go into healing mode, that is why Lee ventured to the city, considering his entire life prior had been in relative darkness? Maybe that's even why he became more skilled at arms? You tell me.
As I said, for a human fighter that length of writing works for me, but you sounded like you might want to know more about your character's relation to the world before plopping him into it or thinking about how he got there. I can give you its recent history as it pertains to him, but it's up to you to decide where he fits into it.
((Edit - I know that's long, but there are some things that affected all characters in Layonara, so it seemed like it might be helpful. Sorry for the read!))
