Default New Character Submission - Illanth Doranth

Character: Illanth Doranth
Age: 20
Gender: Male
Class: Cleric
Race: Half Elf
Alignment: Neutral Good
Deity: Lucinda
Domains: Healing Knowledge

Biography:

Illanth began his life as the son of a simple farming family outside of Arms Keep. His father Edward Doranth, was a simple human man. He was a 10th generation farmer and knew little outside of growing crops and farming. His mother was Illiuand. She was a grey elf child that had fallen in love with Edward years before. Her most usefull skills were cooking and making the simple clothes that the whole family wore.

When Illanth was 9, the harvest was very bad and the family did not have enough stores of food to make it to the next harvest cycle. Edward knew of a temple of Lucinda where he had recieved healing after an accident while he was a child. He brought Illanth there and gave him to a Cleric by the name of Gorant Lunger.

Gorant brought Illanth into the temple and began teaching him of the Weave. He tought Illanth that the Weave is all of life and all of the order. As the Weave is life, it is also Lucinda. All things must help the Weave and in turn help Lucinda. Illanth begain his Illanth was taken into the temple's libraries and Gorant tought him how to read common. It is here that Illanth gained a great appreciation for knowledge. This prompted Gorant to keep Illanth in the order of Divination as he, himself was.

Gorant taught Illanth how to pray to Lucinda and the importance of magic in all things. He taught Illanth of the Circle of Eight and it's importance for prayer. Illanth was enlightened by this and devoted his life to being in Lucindas favor.

When Illanth turned 16, Gorant began to bring Illanth with him to observe him healing those in need while at the temple. He saw the miracles that Lucinda bestowed upone those that needed her help and her ability to to work her powers thru the weave. This intensified his desire to devoutly pray and follow her tennants. What better way to serve Lucinda's goals than spreading knowledge of magic and healing those that are in need.

At the age of 20, Illanth has now become an adult. His longing for adventure has caused him to leave the temple and seek out others that may need his help. He is on his way to spread the word and works of the Weave.

1) I have read and understood the dogma and expitations of Lucinda. The Weave is Lucinda and her followers. All that is done is to be done to defend, honor, and promote the Weave.

2)My character believes in the advancement, promotion, and protection of the Weave. He believes that the best way to promote and protect the Weave is to join other adventurers and help them in any means necessary. This will show the greatness of the Weave and bring more to Lucinda's causes. Helping others and gaining knowledge can only help the Weave.

3)Illanth believes that arms should only be taken when needed. He dresses as most of the mages did that come and go thru the temples' doors. The simple quarterstaff he carys doubles as a walking staff.

Hi there!

This is a good start, but as it stands, it reads as a fighter devoted to Lucinda. He stayed at the temple, he respects the Goddess, and he learned how to wield martial weapons.

A cleric (as I said in a recent post), is not merely someone who worships a deity. Lots of people worship a deity, and get nothing but peace of mind and the occasional bit of luck from the bargain, or a sense of direction. A cleric's devotion and faith are so unswerving, so powerful, that they actually attract a bit of the attention of the deity itself, prompting the deity to answer their prayers with power (spells).

This is, in a way, enlightened self-interest by the deity. While the faith of their clerics is part of what grants them power, their clerics also spread the word (and deed) of their deity. Granting them the power to do so, and further their cause on Layonara, is in the deity's best interest. But it takes someone with unflinching faith to serve in that role. The Deity comes first in a cleric's life - they have devoted themselves to a cause, and that cause is their God/Goddess.

For that reason, it is unusual for a cleric to ever use a weapon other than that favoured by their church. A fighter who fights in the name of Lucinda might very well use a flail, sword, or whatever they wish, but a cleric would, out of respect to the being they've pledged their lives to, almost always use their deity's weapon.

Any exception to this would require substantial justification - beyond a simple preference or belief that another weapon is "better".

Once you've expanded on Illanth's faith and indoctrination into the Church of Lucinda, post again to this thread.

Thanks!

Some final notes on character creation:
  • Please note that racial adjustments for players with subraces are skin based and thus get applied after getting in game.
  • Only two ability scores can be less than 10 and only one can be less than 8 after racial adjustments
  • Brownies, when selecting a head, the head you choose on the halfling selection will correspond to that numbered head for elves (for example, clicking right 6 times on the head selection during character creation will take the 6th head when clicking right on the elf creation)
  • Half-giants and ogres, please ask for a GM (type /dm Anyone here?) if you would like to change to a custom skin.

have fun!

FYI if he was trained in a temple, each of the domains correspond to one of Lucinda's wards. While the church will be going through changes in the future, at the moment they are still valid and few see what lies ahead. The information is available in the handbook, but for a summary, he belongs to the Fallan Gis and the Uvaer Gis - the Healward and the Loreward. Clerics typically have one ward as primary, and one secondary.

The Fallan Gis has always been a small ward, focused on restorative magics, to tend sicknesses mundane and (especially) magical, as naturally they are healers of the goddess of magic. In recent years the ward has seen little growth, as fewer and fewer true healers arrive to the faith - it still focuses on all that stuff, but rarely do those come that rival Aeridin or Prunilla and such faiths for abilities in healing the body. Some think it may be an unexpected (to the church, anyway) side track of the dissolution of Lucinda and Aeridin's longstanding alliance some time ago, as while still skilled in magical ailments, they become less about pure healing. Since few join the ward, and those that do are rarely the healers of the old days, he will be a rare newcomer.

The Uvaer Gis is full of geeks (cough, sorry, intelligent people fascinated with obscure bits of knowledge) that collect every bit of magical knowledge scraps they can get their hands on. Rituals, symbols, magical paraphernalia, dusty tomes... even if it is not practically useful to say, a wizard, nor necessary for a priestess, they record it to preserve the history and knowledge of magic. They often are content to remain in their temples learning what there is to learn of magic, from the useless to the catastrophic, but there are of course those that wish to experience it and discover things at the source.

He'll start as Strandbound in his wards of choice, having mastered the basics of what they have to offer and taken the first tentative steps on the path of mysteries.

Thank you. Illanth is a primary of Uvaer Gi and a secondary Fallan Gi His natural thirst for knowledge will pull him in this direction. Illanth will be a great healer as well, but he will be seen more of a book worm.
