| New Character Submission - Giffin Goblenose Character: Giffin Goblenose
Age: 113
Gender: Male
Class: Wizard
Race: Gnome
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Deity: None
Biography:
Born in a small town of tinkering gnomes, Giffin was one of two children born of Layla and Ivanascott Gobblenose. A constant prankster with a child-like sense of humor, he was the pride of his family. Being a symbol of great pride for him personally, he felt blessed when his nose grew to its full, giant size...after all you know what they say about the size of a Gnome's nose. His parents decided upon his adulthood to send him to become a wizard's apprentice. Specializing as an illusionist, his pranks proved both useful and frustrating in his early career. During a game of hide and seek (a game commonly played with his teacher), he conjured the image of a dragon holding a giant red arrow pointing to where his teacher's other students were hiding...even if they were supposed to be working together! Many of his shenanigans caused his mentor, Vanderck Pipons (another gnome illustionist) headaches, but who offered encouragement despite being the punchline of constant jokes "It's always better to humiliate than to harm" was his motto...and he was secretly proud of his pupil. Things weren't always so light hearted for Giffin though. He loved the sun and bright sky of his youth and felt deep heartfelt sorry after the sky blotting it out. Hearing rumors of dragon sightings and wars outside his small corner of the world didn't do much to lighted his moods either. Still, Giffin pressed on and decided to make something of himself in the world. If it was the last thing he did, he'd make SURE that the newly born gnomes in his home village (or what was possibly left of it after recent events) would see the bright blue sky he was so fond of. One day however Giffin saw something. Something he didn't think he'd see again for a long time. A ray of sunlight pierced its way through the clouds and shown once again through his windows. Looks like someone beat him to the punch of figuring out what to do about the sky. Giffin's heart was lifted as the grey skies rolled into blue and thought of other mysteries to solve and rumors to track down. Were dragons back? What of the white wolf seen roaming around the world? Giffin wanted to be exposed to more and to develop his skills, both as a magic user...and a trickster. Always of good spirits and attempts at sly wit, Giffin is a dependable and loyal to a fault.

| Re: New Character Submission - Giffin Goblenose Hello there, and great start to this submission!
The first thing I want to address is your deity field application. I do see here why Shadon would be appealing to our young gnome but there are some very big (and possibly show stopping consequences) to having a deity in your deity field on Layonara. The effects can be things like (but not limited to!) certain clerics may choose not to raise you based on their own deity inflicted penalties. Much of the populace of Layonara are casual worshipers, many give lipservice to what ever deity seems appropriate at the time (Prunilla for farming and family, Shadon for a good trick inthe works, Deliar for an upcoming business deal, etc) but to hold tightly to one deity with real devoutness is to look to Them and Their interests over and above your own sometimes. Something to consider before you are appoved!
Second of all, it would be great to see a little additional development for Giffin on some of the world effecting events of the last hundred years of his life, such as the 18 years of darkness that killed millions of people the world over from 1402 to 1420. Here is a link to the timeline which might help you work out a few of these defining moments of Giffin's life. Just some light touches to his application to ingrain him into the world will go a long way here.
Thank you in advance for your work on this!

| Re: New Character Submission - Giffin Goblenose Thanks, I've adjusted one or two things, and I think picking a deity early on is a bit much for this character. I'll just see what happens as he develops. | | |

| Re: New Character Submission - Giffin Goblenose Thank you for the additional work! We have on e more issue to address here, and it pertains to the following: Quote:

During a game of hide and seek against the students of the opposite dorm, he conjured the image of a dragon holding a giant red arrow pointing to where members of the game were hiding, both his own team and theirs! "It's always better to humiliate than to harm" was his motto. | Unfortunately there are two lore bits that need correcting... Firstly, nose size does not denote any special standing within the gnomish society. As well there does not appear to be any gnomish schools of wizarding as you've described. However there is a gnomish community along the Erylin side of the Rusty River which is located in Alindor. The major land mark of note within that community is the large temple of Goran. Wizard tutoring is largely taught only in apprenticeships outside of the Lucindite faith. Spellgard is a known center of magic, being a largely Lucindite influenced town. This is located on Mistone, if you are intersted in seeking to place him there abouts for his learning.
Thank you again for your work on this!

| Re: New Character Submission - Giffin Goblenose Gotcha. When I had the idea for playing a gnome I mostly went with the AD&D book of gnomes. I'll update the history a little to make it fit better. Thanks for being patient while I adjust and readjust his past till it fits. | | |

| Re: New Character Submission - Giffin Goblenose Alright, good steps in the direction of approval! I don't mean to sound nitpicky but I've emboldened some references in the latter part of your biography of the school that was removed. They'll need to change.... Quote:

Lastly! As illustrated by the ages of races chart.... Gnomes typically reach maturity at the age of 40. Giffin here is a bit more then twice that when he sets out into the world. Is there an explanation of all that time that passes where he would (ideallly) have already been an illusionist out and on his own? If so that's fine, we'd just like to have a bit about it if possible.
Thank you again!

| Re: New Character Submission - Giffin Goblenose Oh it's no problem at all. I hope this looks better. Admittedly I should've put more time into his history and lore, but I'll stick with this for now and develop it more in game. | | |

| Re: New Character Submission - Giffin Goblenose Thank you again for the extra work on this. You might, as part of your development in game, pick something from the suggested maps I linked to you in my previous posting, for his starting location (these sorts of things come up pretty often really).
That said.... Your character has been approved.
Server address is west.layonara.com
Password is layoplayer
Some final notes on character creation:
- Please note that racial adjustments for players with subraces are skin based and thus get applied after getting in game.
- Only two ability scores can be less than 10 and only one can be less than 8 after racial adjustments
- Brownies, when selecting a head, the head you choose on the halfling selection will correspond to that numbered head for elves (for example, clicking right 6 times on the head selection during character creation will take the 6th head when clicking right on the elf creation)
- Half-giants and ogres, please ask for a GM (type /dm Anyone here?) if you would like to change to a custom skin.
Welcome Giffin Goblenose to the lands of Layonara.
