Welcome to the Layonara forums!

Layonara is so much more than a game. We started off as a tabletop Dungeons and Dragons campaign more than a decade ago. Since then we have developed into a fantasy world with as much compelling and engrossing detail as you will find anywhere.

Our current showcase is a Neverwinter Nights version of Layonara, where our world comes to life in a finely polished persistent world which you can play free of charge. These forums are set up to support and accentuate our player's experiences, but it goes far beyond that.

After years of passionate effort, our world is so well developed, so detailed, so refined that any of the handbooks, maps, historical accounts, legends, descriptions of artifacts, creature reports, character biographies, short stories, novels, movies and original art which populate these forums can surely serve as resources or inspiration for your own fantasy endeavors, whatever they may be. And our world is endlessly evolving, so resources are frequently added and updated.

There are also years of sage advice and commentary on role-playing, gaming and online community development stored in these forums. If camaraderie is what you seek, we offer that too. Our community is as active and supportive as you're likely to find on the internet. In short, these forums are a resource for you to use for whatever purpose or project brought you here.

Default Ix Iv Rex

Name: Ixiv Rex
Age: 26
Race: Human
Sex: Male
Alignment: True Neutral
Class: Fighter
Diety: None

Description:-
Standing at a massive 6'4" this imposing figure holds himself with dignity and pride. Even his casual stance tells of years of training and duty, while his body tells of a lifetime of hard work. Often mistaken for a mute, due to rarely speaking, or a simpleton when he does speak.

Bio:-
Early childhood:
Ix's early childhood is perhaps the life he cherishes and misses the most, though harsh and unforgiving as his family was - his time in Leringard was the best for him. His family were worshippers of Corath, eager to further themselves. Through ruthless business dealings where their religious beliefs and business strategy overlapped they became successful and moderately wealthy. Ixiv, the ninth child and only fourth to survive, never wanted for anything. One by one his older brothers entered into the business as enforcers and debt collectors, all except one, who left to seek his own fame and fortune - taking a good portion of the seasons takings with him.

Late childhood:
During his later childhood, when capable of understanding, his parents tried to introduce Ixiv to the intricacies of religion, secrecy, back-stabbing and double-dealing. While Ixiv picked up on some of these, he often tended to other topics with little more than a feigned interest. It was one morning, when Ixiv was ten, that his father disappeared overnight; his mother said his father had run away, as some but not all of his belongings were gone.

Early teens:
With his father, their previous debt enforcer, now gone Ixiv's mother quickly paid a considerable sum to hire a personal trainer, one who had been used before on his older brothers. This personal trainer instructed Ixiv to pick a weapon he felt he liked, trying to be difficult Ixiv chose a bastard sword, too large for him to even lift at the time. Ix was at first dismayed that the trainer said this was a good choice, but later delighted in all the wonderful tactics and moves he learnt.

Mid teens:
Years upon years of training passed Ixiv by. He and his trainer moved on from wooden mock weapons to real weapons and armour. During this period Ixiv learnt dozens of more fantastical moves; how to trip an opponent, fight whole groups at once, dodge seemingly impossible to survive blows and deliver incredible shield shattering blows of his own. All this time with his weapon of choice.

Late teens:
Eventually this training came to and end and Ixiv entered into business with his mother and two brothers. Years upon years of training and hard work had formed him into a strapping young man and an intimidating figure of authority. This made him ideal for the work of bullying local suppliers, collecting debts and intimidating travelling traders into passing by or selling their wares cheaper than usual. All to the family's profit of course.

Early adulthood:
As time went by, Ixiv entered into his early twenties and started to take on more and more aspects of the business, including trading with other towns and cities and collecting larger and more dangerous debts. Anonymity was key, and Ixiv took on an appearance he's never really left behind to facilitate his job.

Leading up to present:
One collection went foul however, a guardsman owed the family a great deal and Ixiv was sent to collect, being considered a match for the mans skills with a sword. While the guardsmans debts mounted so he was waging a secret mission; gathering information and evidence against the family. Upon going to collect, Ixiv was confronted and told that his mother and brothers had already been taken into custody. Ixiv disabled three guardsmen and escaped temporarily to check on his home. His family were gone and more men were laying in wait, mercenaries hired to help catch him. Ixiv killed both of them and gathered as much of his belongings as he could before running to hop onto the next boat out of port. With only the clothes on his back, and the coin from collections earlier in the day he ran, Ixiv has arrived in a new land, to forge a new life and maybe even seek fame and glory, just for the sake of it. A focus for his drive of hatred and frustration, even more so than the point of his sword.

Clarifications:
  • To clarify, his entire family ran a 'business', including his mother, father and brothers.
  • They run the business like a kind of mafia, allowing credit and loans that were often violently collected
  • The brother that left to adventure, is dead - for a long time, at least two years dead, though he doesn't know this IC.
  • Ix never really took to being a Corathite, but it didn't interfere much with his day-to-day activities
  • Ixiv is very bitter and spiteful and full of frustration and rage - I would have liked to play him as lawful evil or chaotic neutral right off.

STEALTH EDITS: Two stealth edits to change backstory minorly to reflect his weapon of choice, changed due to extra time spent in character planning. Also added the list to clarify a few points that may have been a little muddy in the original bio.

Updated to add all modifications made into bold text to make them easier to find. Thankyou.

Hi there!

A solid story for a human fighter. Be aware that Corath is intensely disliked most anywhere civilized, and out-and-out hated in a lot of places, so telling someone you were raised by Corathites is not likely to win many friends. Additionally, I'm not certain how happy growing up in a Corathite household would be.

That aside, we do have one problem with your character that will require revision - the name. There was not any Roman Empire (or equivalent) in Layonara, so any roman numerals encountered in-game are only there for the edification of the player, not the character. IX would just be "ix" to a Layonaran - it would have no other meaning. So "Ix Iv" as 9th, 4th, won't fly, I'm afraid.

Once you've resolved the name by one means or another, the fighter formerly known as Iv Ix should be good to go.

Thanks!

(Oh, as a side note, you might want to choose a location for him to come from. The Maps of Layonara might come in handy here. It's always good to know where your character once called home... just in case a quest ever brings you back that way. Or you feel like confiding your childhood stories in some other character, whatever comes first.)

Edit: In response to your own edits - please bear your alignment in mind when playing your character. Until you've demonstrated an ability to play your alignment, you won't be authorized to begin a move towards a different one. So if he's going to be vengeful and full of rage, temper that with discipline or something else.

Ooh! Sorry, I didn't think to put the whole name situation in the list!

Hah! Well then... There's actually a good explanation for the Ix Iv thing - I didn't want to outright call him Nine Four, so I converted it to roman numerals and took away the capitalisation on X and V and voila, you have a name meaning the same to us real-world types, but is pretty cool in-game between characters. Realised my mistake when you pointed this out and changed my original bio to reflect this.

As for where he's from, I'd have to say Leringard. Definitely Leringard, has a port so it fits with his back-story.

Again, back to the name thing. I'm willing to change it around to Warrick Rex if my explanation of Ix Iv doesn't work for you.

The key is that the letters cannot represent any sort of numbers. So if you want to name him "Ixiv" or some such, go right ahead, but you cannot, either in the submission or in-game, assign anachronistic significance to the name.

If you'd prefer Warrick to Ixiv, by all means, make the change, but the bit pertaining to the reason behind the name will have to go. (Also, if you want to work Leringard into your original bio, now's your chance.)

Post again once you've made the update.

Updated Early Childhood section for home-town. Also updated name to Ixiv.

Are these changes not good enough? Or am I just too impatient? XD

(I was asleep until about 15 minutes ago. Largely because I'm a bad person who didn't set his alarm.)

Right. Ixiv it is, with no significance whatsoever.

I'll caution you once more that you have to keep his rage and frustration in check - or give him a good side to counterbalance it. But that can be played out in-game.

As an aside, it wouldn't need to be mercenaries - if it were revealed that his family were Corath worshipers, the town guard could be called in to shut them down. However, making it mercenaries from another less-than-scrupulous individual makes Ixiv's self-defense more justifiable.

Some final notes on character creation:
  • Please note that racial adjustments for players with subraces are skin based and thus get applied after getting in game.
  • Only two ability scores can be less than 10 and only one can be less than 8 after racial adjustments
  • Brownies, when selecting a head, the head you choose on the halfling selection will correspond to that numbered head for elves (for example, clicking right 6 times on the head selection during character creation will take the 6th head when clicking right on the elf creation)
  • Half-giants and ogres, please ask for a GM (type /dm Anyone here?) if you would like to change to a custom skin.

Have fun!
