Welcome to the Layonara forums!

Layonara is so much more than a game. We started off as a tabletop Dungeons and Dragons campaign more than a decade ago. Since then we have developed into a fantasy world with as much compelling and engrossing detail as you will find anywhere.

Our current showcase is a Neverwinter Nights version of Layonara, where our world comes to life in a finely polished persistent world which you can play free of charge. These forums are set up to support and accentuate our player's experiences, but it goes far beyond that.

After years of passionate effort, our world is so well developed, so detailed, so refined that any of the handbooks, maps, historical accounts, legends, descriptions of artifacts, creature reports, character biographies, short stories, novels, movies and original art which populate these forums can surely serve as resources or inspiration for your own fantasy endeavors, whatever they may be. And our world is endlessly evolving, so resources are frequently added and updated.

There are also years of sage advice and commentary on role-playing, gaming and online community development stored in these forums. If camaraderie is what you seek, we offer that too. Our community is as active and supportive as you're likely to find on the internet. In short, these forums are a resource for you to use for whatever purpose or project brought you here.

Default New Character Submission - Bree

Character: Bree
Age: 37
Gender: Female
Class: Cleric
Race: Half Elf
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Deity: Xeen
Domains: Animal Water

Biography:

In Novlar of 1394, Biana Rial Johannes was born. The product of a brief and drunken encounter between a young human Lucindite priestess named Elisha Johannes and an elf male who only gave his name as Aralthein. Their tryst was short but passionate, lasting only the span of the Night of Flesh and Magic earlier that same year. Elisha never saw him again, but it didn't seem to matter to her, and she saw Biana as a gift from Lucinda. Elisha left Spellgard before Biana was born and took up residence in Paruin, still doing Lucinda's work but concentrating on raising her daughter alone.

Biana was widely regarded as a pretty child since birth, a blessing which remained with her through adulthood. Raven-haired and with blue eyes that could pierce through to a person's soul, she never was at a loss for admirers. It was not long before she, consciously or otherwise, picked up on this fact and figured out that if she played cute, people would give her things. The first to do so regularly was her mother. Being single, Elisha doted on Biana in some subconscious way of trying to make up for a lack of a father. Her mother also gave her the nickname “Bree”, which came out of “BiRi”...a shortening of Biana's first and middle name that sounded cute and musical to Elisha. The nickname soon took hold and only her mother ever called her anything but Bree. Elisha never married and unfortunately for them both, she perished during the Dark Ages, not due to hunger or disease, but rather a raid on Paruin by bandits. Bree was only six years old at the time.

Bree was immediately taken in by another family in the wake of her mother's passing. While not intentional at this point, Bree still found herself wanting for nothing, and if she did want, such wants were met soon enough. It wasn't until her tenth year that she began to realize that she could get what she wanted by her smile and her cute face, or play upon the sympathy of her situation. She was smart enough though not to push things too far. As she matured, things became easier, especially in getting the men-folk to bring her gifts and do special favors...frightfully easy in some cases. Her prettiness as a child blossomed into a head-turning beauty as a teen and into adulthood. She became somewhat skilled at securing her wishes. While she was never overly-manipulative, nor did she do things for spite (usually), she never wanted for long. In her mid teens, she learned the fine art of trading, usually with the teen boys of Paruin, though even so, most trades were generally in her favor.

At the age of 18, still slightly young for a half-elf, Bree left Paruin, as most of her peers had done. She hesitated to call them friends, as she never took the time to really get to know anyone well enough. She traveled with caravans and the occasional gypsy troupe, never really one of them but pretending to be so to gain passage with relatively little cost. It was a strange time for Bree, as she was growing into full adulthood, and while she could get whatever she desired with relative ease, she began to feel lacking. By 19, she found herself in Port Hempstead, loitering about the docks for something to do (and perhaps to spot a merchant with interesting wares), when she heard the sailors going on about a port on Alindor named Katherian. She knew that sailors talked big, but she listened all the same, and became intrigued about this place and about the rumors of the temple to Xeen in that city. The rumors spoke to her and she found herself drawn to find out more.

It took a some managing and the implication of some “special” favors (only a couple of which she actually had to follow through with), but she eventually made passage on a ship to Alindor and a series of caravans that brought her to Katherian after several months. It turned out to be more than she expected. To her eyes, the town was alive with questionable dealings, scams upon scams, and her mind started racing at the possibilities. It wasn't long before she found the Temple, being the most prominent and visible structure besides the docks and slave market. Without hesitation, she made her way to the door and moved inside.

What met her senses was immediately intoxicating. It was difficult for her to contain her wonder at the possibilities that opened up before her. She was also not unaware of the looks from others as she moved through the main hall, looks she would find a way to capitalize upon soon enough, if she had her way. She spent a lot of time watching and listening, figuring out who she could coax and what they might be able to get or do for her. In her observations though, she also began to learn more about Xeen and Her ways and found them deeper than what is snickered about in back rooms and ale-induced boasting. What she found was a purpose that she didn't know she was lacking, as well as a way to indulge all the wants a young woman might have.

She began speaking with the clergy, and soon began training to become a priestess. Her training built upon her natural assets and abilities, and she seemed to excel at coaxing more from people seeking Xeen's various bounties. At the same time, she learned much about her own limits of what she could accomplish and what she could endure. Before long she was found worthy of Xeen's blessings, and not long after, she met two others, Ember and Mai, who would become her first and only friends. For these two, she found she would do anything, and for the first time not expect anything in return. As a team, they worked very well, and it was a sad day for Bree, though she never let it show too much, when Ember left a permanent residence at the temple to see what the world had to offer. When Mai followed not long after, Bree was alone again.

While they both came back to visit from time to time, Bree missed them more than not, until one day she packed some things and told the head priestess that she was leaving to spread Xeen's word, but she'd not be gone for good. Her return to Mistone was much as her journey to Katherian, gaining passage by using her looks and her way with people, now well-honed from her training at the Temple, to get passage on caravans and a ship out of Mariner's Hold.

When at last she arrived in Port Hempsted, her face came alive with possibilities once more. With a brief but impish grin, she set out to search for her friends.

Physical description:
Bree stands 5'3” in height, taller if she opts to wear heeled shoes, which she pretty much does whenever there is hard floor or ground to stand on. She has long, raven-black hair that she usually keeps pulled back, lightly tanned skin and sharp blue eyes. Her human and elven heritage combine to give her a face that's both deceptively cute and exotic and a physical form that is slender and well-shaped. While not terribly strong, she keeps herself in good physical shape.

Deity statement:
  1. I have read and understand Xeen's dogma and the expectations upon Xeen's clergy
  2. Bree currently sees her faith in Xeen as a way of life, meshing and complimenting her own leanings. She is not pushy about imposing her faith on others, but if the opportunity and interest is presented to educate someone about Xeen's bounties, she will pursue it with a significant focus, especially if she feels she can bring some benefit to herself or to Xeen in the process.
  3. Bree typically wears clothing made of silk or cloth, and more often than not wears tightly-corseted tops, though her slender form does not require them for correction. She rather sees this as a personal sacrifice in comfort and a reminder to seek pleasure when available. She pairs these tops with flattering dresses, skirts or form-fitting pants depending on the occasion. If more protection is needed, she will opt for leathers instead. Her preferred weapon is a whip, though she also carries a couple daggers for close-in emergency situations.
This submission is tied to two other characters (Ember Beau and Mai) already approved an in-play. This association is at the consent of the players of those characters, and fits into the already-established backgrounds for these characters.

I feel obligated, somehow, to rake this one across the coals; I wonder why that is?

Unfortunately for me, I can see only one thing that might be an issue - the mysterious elven father.

So, to that end, we just need to see a statement to the effect that, as a player, you have no agenda in mind for Bree to be of royal, noble, or deific parentage, or other similar powerful tie-ins. (This, of course, does not have to preclude a DM introducing such twists to her mysterious father, but can if you wish.)

Other than that (*sigh*) this submission is ready to go.

Bah! Alright.

I hereby state, unequivocally, that this character's parentage is assumed to be completely mundane as far as I or the character knows, suspects or desires. There will be no claims of nobility, royalty, divine privilege or any kind (other than that granted to any cleric and/or divinely-empowered character) or other advantageous benefit due to the unspecified background of either parent, either from myself or from Bree, unless stated specifically in a GM-sponsored and managed way.

Taxes and shipping are extra. Void where prohibited. Some restrictions may apply. Some assembly required. Not valid in all states. And so on...

If need be, I can cook up something about the father, but honestly, he doesn't matter to her, and never has.

Your character has been approved.

Server address is west.layonara.com
Password is layoplayer

Some final notes on character creation:
  • Please note that racial adjustments for players with subraces are skin based and thus get applied after getting in game.
  • Only two ability scores can be less than 10 and only one can be less than 8 after racial adjustments
  • Brownies, when selecting a head, the head you choose on the halfling selection will correspond to that numbered head for elves (for example, clicking right 6 times on the head selection during character creation will take the 6th head when clicking right on the elf creation)
  • Half-giants and ogres, please ask for a GM (type /dm Anyone here?) if you would like to change to a custom skin.

*Stamps with the stamping stamp of superfluous stamping*
