Welcome to the Layonara forums!

Layonara is so much more than a game. We started off as a tabletop Dungeons and Dragons campaign more than a decade ago. Since then we have developed into a fantasy world with as much compelling and engrossing detail as you will find anywhere.

Our current showcase is a Neverwinter Nights version of Layonara, where our world comes to life in a finely polished persistent world which you can play free of charge. These forums are set up to support and accentuate our player's experiences, but it goes far beyond that.

After years of passionate effort, our world is so well developed, so detailed, so refined that any of the handbooks, maps, historical accounts, legends, descriptions of artifacts, creature reports, character biographies, short stories, novels, movies and original art which populate these forums can surely serve as resources or inspiration for your own fantasy endeavors, whatever they may be. And our world is endlessly evolving, so resources are frequently added and updated.

There are also years of sage advice and commentary on role-playing, gaming and online community development stored in these forums. If camaraderie is what you seek, we offer that too. Our community is as active and supportive as you're likely to find on the internet. In short, these forums are a resource for you to use for whatever purpose or project brought you here.

We're confident that you will find what you are looking for, and likely, substantially more.

Default New Character Submission - Gord Callam

Name: Gord Callam
Race: Human
Age: 23
Gender: Male
Alignment: True Neutral
Diety: Xeen
Class 1: Cleric
Class 2: Fighter

Domains: Animal, Plant

Physical Description:
Gord Callam isn't a remarkable man in any physical aspect, he's not overly strong nor tall. He stands at an average five-feet six-inches and weighs in at an average 96 kilograms. Gord indulges in his vanity with immaculately groomed hair and pampered skin.

Background:
Gord grew up with his parents, devout Xeenites, in Port Hempstead. Even throughout his earlier years he'd be present when they were helping to prepare for festivals and celebrations, as his family would celebrate any number of momentous events, personal or historical, frequently - perhaps just for the sake of having a good time. Gords early years were quiet and unremarkable, with no events of note.
During his developing years, Gord begun to take an interest in his fathers work - making wine. This process, of taking ingredients and turning them into a drink, fascinated Gord. He'd spend hours on end with his father researching and studying his craft (even though at such an age he didn't understand more than to fetch this or that) rather than playing with other children and most of his time talking was spent asking questions.
However, towards the end of his childhood, Gord's father who was already becoming elderly, passed away. This saddened Gord immensely and he lamented for many months on this passing. It was blamed on too much alcohol, too much boozing and partying.
Over the following years, throughout his teens, Gord learnt with his fathers partners and friends in the business of making fine wine and took up the trade himself in his later teens. Years passed this way, where he would help cater for celebrations and lords and ladies or even anyone who'd pay a few True for a good drink. A lot of the other workers were avid worshippers of Xeen, and word soon reached Gords ears. Always open for a chance of a good time, as he was often helping provide it, Gord took these tenets to heart.
When Gords mother passed away however, he didn't lament or mourn, but instead held a celebration of her accomplishments and life. Having great respect for his mother, Gord wanted to do as much good and bring as much joy to others as his mother had in her life. This led him to attempt to corner a cleric of Xeen who wasn't busy revelling and for him to explain this situation in great detail, along with his wishes and expectations.
The cleric simply replied that he should stay and drink and enjoy the fleeting pleasure, to do as he wished and take heart in whatever festivities he became part of. So Gord stayed; he joined the routines, flitted between festhalls and various other members of the clergy, learning what he could and develping strong ties with the community.
With a gift for vanity, if not for an agreeable vocabulary, Gord became fanatic and almost a zealot. He'd put all his energy into any endeavour, rushing this way and that to do as much as possible. Some might say this is against the Xeenite beliefs but if truth be told, Gord enjoyed every moment of it, and the rewards it brought.
Gord became friends with a like-minded soul, another energetic individual who introduced Gord to another great pleasure, fighting. Sparring to be precise, with training weapons made of wood. Gord took to this new activity with great zeal too and learnt a great many things from his new-found friend. Through time, Gord and this woman grew close and shared more of their lives, and Gord came to learn something of Lucindites too, their need for order and meetings to share information rather than revel and get so drunk they couldn't remember any of it baffled him.
Nevertheless, Gord loved this woman and lived with her for two years until, while she was away on a trip to recover an enchanted wand Gord recieved news of her demise - an ambush by bandits on her party - by messenger. This saddened him greatly and drove him even further into his beliefs, for does not Xeen say 'love is fleeting'?
Another year has passed since this event, and all that time has been spent learning and revelling. Gord may be unstable, in a pleasant way, in that he believes he may be a chosen one (though no such privilidges have been bestowed upon him) of Xeen, destined to be his goddess' will on this plane and to spread pleasure and joy to everyone. Gord believes this so strongly that he can become dilusional, manic even, if contradicted on the matter.
Despite his mental condition however, Gord does indeed to his best to bring happiness and pleasure to the lives of everyone he meets, and rarely becomes violent unless faced with deadly creatures or threats to his friends.

Dogma:

  • Life is to be lived to its fullest, in decadent sensual fulfillment of the carnal desires of yourself and others.
  • Pleasure is to be sought at every opportunity, even if it will eventually cause harm to you or others.
  • Reason is for those who do not know how to savor life the way it was meant to be enjoyed.
  • Infinite experiences await those who explore the world of pelasures, so try the new as well as savouring the old.
  • Enjoy love when you can, for it shall not last long.
  • Make win and other gifts of Xeen and offer them to everyone, that they may enjoy the blissful taste and free themselves of their worldly cares.
  • Clerics of Xeen prefer leather (over metal) armor and clothing, and use the whip as a weapon. Color does not matter.

I have read and understood the dogma/beliefs of a Xeenite and believe I am capable of upholding the ideals and playing my character to the potential this presents.

Notes:
To clarify, as usual, neither of Gord's parents were anyone important, nobility etc. Neither was his fictitious partner. I realise also that I already have several characters, but playing a purely hack-and-slash (bash?) moronic half-giant is getting a little... (how to put it politely...) uninteresting. I'm here to have fun and this is something I've been considering for quite some time. Thankyou for reading.

Nothing wrong with additional characters - I'm at three already.

This is looking good, but there are a few small points I'd like to see cleared up before approval.

First - sorry to say, the reason why we have the numbered dogma statements is to make sure that nothing gets missed. In your case, you're missing the content from Statement #3 - that which pertains to the normal practices of the clergy in terms of garb and choice of weapons. Xeen's favoured weapon is the whip, and I don't know if that weapon was even mentioned in your submission.

Second - from birth to age 12, Gord wouldn't have seen the sun - and even in Hempstead, winemaking would probably go by the wayside in favour of subsistence farming. If his father had built up substantial cellars, he might have kept in business, but it would've been hard to find grapes for wine during the Dark Ages.

Finally, just a small point - at 5'6 and 96 kg (212 lbs), Gord wouldn't be of "average" build. He would be significantly obese.

Once you've dealt with the above points, Gord should be ready to go.

Thanks!

You might also want to clarify his clerical domains as well.....

My apologies for missing the dogma statement, serves me right for writing while I'm tired.

However - I don't mean to be awkward but I make no specific references to the sun at all in his biography so I'm not entirely sure how much that's relevant.

As for the wine and ingredients, who's to say that his father didn't spend some time studying and focusing on this 'art' rather than actually 'making' wine in these early years. To reflect this I've updated those paragraphs.

Fixed some spelling mistakes, and added clerical domains.

accepting the weight statement is adrift- lets assume he is average proportions as described.

Don't worry about being awkward either, as it was mentioned not because you were thought to have talked about the sun in your bio but actually because of its absence. Since it was a global dark age with such widespread starvation and suffering, we mention it whenever it is not mentioned in case someone doesn't know about it...it's relevant to all characters that were living in that time period and heavily impacted all things on the surface, even Xeenites. Certainly partying and festivities were hard to come by, and most of the people of Port Hempstead were occupied trying to provide for themselves. Of course, for the Shadonites and Xeenites, festivities are practically divine missions - just saying that the atmosphere around them was unavoidable until around 1420.

Have fun!
