Layonara is so much more than a game. We started off as a tabletop Dungeons and Dragons campaign more than a decade ago. Since then we have developed into a fantasy world with as much compelling and engrossing detail as you will find anywhere.
Our current showcase is a Neverwinter Nights version of Layonara, where our world comes to life in a finely polished persistent world which you can play free of charge. These forums are set up to support and accentuate our player's experiences, but it goes far beyond that.
After years of passionate effort, our world is so well developed, so detailed, so refined that any of the handbooks, maps, historical accounts, legends, descriptions of artifacts, creature reports, character biographies, short stories, novels, movies and original art which populate these forums can surely serve as resources or inspiration for your own fantasy endeavors, whatever they may be. And our world is endlessly evolving, so resources are frequently added and updated.
There are also years of sage advice and commentary on role-playing, gaming and online community development stored in these forums. If camaraderie is what you seek, we offer that too. Our community is as active and supportive as you're likely to find on the internet. In short, these forums are a resource for you to use for whatever purpose or project brought you here.
We're confident that you will find what you are looking for, and likely, substantially more.
Please be our guest and browse around the forums which are available to you. As you do, keep in mind that you are sampling only a portion of what Layonara has to offer. | New Character Submission - Dubbel Character: Dubbel
Age: 18
Gender: Male
Class: Fighter
Race: Half Giant
Alignment: True Neutral
Deity: Multiple
Biography:
Youth
Dubbel has little worth remembering from his time growing up in the foothills outside Fort Llast. He knew no mother, though all his peers made sure he knew his father's origin. "Son of a giant." "Ogre... no, they're not as ugly as you!"
He knew no love and precious little compassion. Mostly he was viewed as a beast of burden; a "something" to be used, not a "someone."
For all this, though, he was not in turmoil. Things are what they are. Good days or bad days were indistinguishable from each other. There was yesterday, there is today, and there will be a tomorrow.
Today
"Again!" roared the broad shouldered man cracking fist into palm with the sound of a whip. "Finish it this time!"
Dubbel rested, hands on knees, and stared at the sawdust floor. Sweat trickled down the bridge of his oft-broken nose to mix with his own blood before falling away. His chest heaved from the exertion.
Across the floor his opponent nodded to the man and squared himself to face Dubbel.
Straightening, Dubbel rolled his head to loosen his stiff neck and took in a deep lungful of air. In a flash, his opponent was inside his guard again striking palm to chest with another quick blow upward. It was all Dubbel could do not to black out entirely before slamming into the warehouse's floor.
"Good!" The boss jumped down from his perch on the rail and clapped the victor on the back. "That's how it's done. No softness, just finish what you start." Before leaving, he reached into the purse on his belt and dug out a couple coins, tossing them down onto the sawdust where Dubbel now sat. Nothing extra for today's poor job as a sparring partner. No words were exchanged.
Dubbel was no good with fists. Put a couple clubs in them, or better yet axes, and he might hold his own a little longer. Everyone liked sparring with fists against the halfgiant, though; a solid ego boost before a match.
"Soon," Dubbel thought as he weighed the True in his dirty palm, "I'll have enough for the trip to Vehl." He knew they had a real arena there. Knew that there was coin to be made. Knew that there was more to life than losing.
Summary
As per usual, I'm looking for a PC to kick around inside of. How long he'll last is anyone's guess. :-)
Dubbel is true neutral. He is emotionally ambivalent to his surroundings. His largest goal is perhaps carving out a better life in a modest way. His skillset is limited, though, to being beat upon by others. He doesn't fault them for that and assumes they won't fault him when it's his turn to do the beating.
I chose halfgiant because I enjoy the builtin RP that the rarer races deliver.
More fluff for halfgiant aspects....
The halfgiant in Dubbel's personality comes out now and then. He tends to act first and think later, preferring to brute force through problems. His patience can be short and though he is not violent in an evil sense of the word, his aggravations often manifest themselves physically. As noted above, his temper is not volatile but when it does erupt it explodes. He does not tend to hold grudges and affronts are most often quicly forgotten about.
My personal challenge for this PC will be to RP more through descriptive emotes rather than verbally. Dubbel will not speak much.
Unlike with Pig, I will not like him into a weapon of choice or other such directions early on. I'll let his place in the world develop based more on who he meets and travels with. Will he travel with thugs or paladins? Such will guide his growth and direction.
Probably won't do much crafting. Mining perhaps but the iron ceiling is not one I want to bang against again.
Temper
He learned early in life that people were quick to make judgments about him due to his abnormally large size and giant looks. "Who broke the outhouse door!?" "It must have been Dubbel."
In these situations it was best just to remain silent. To disagree would invite argument, to agree to invite punishment. When pushed far enough, though, Dubbel would erupt. His outbursts were more common and uncontrollable as a youth, of course. Now he could keep a lid on it, so to speak. It would take a lot of pushing to get Dubbel to lose his patience these days. He knows what they do to adult giants: They kill them.
Alignment
Dubbel is self-centered, having learned that he needs to look after himself. He's willing to work with others to further his own needs. He's even willing to work towards others' goals if he thinks they'll benefit himself in the future.
He has no care for laws and rules. He's not out to break any but he's also not one to let them be a deterrent to success.

| Re: New Character Submission - Dubbel Hi there, PnP. Sorry for the delay - fell asleep earlier than I'd planned last night.
Fairly solid support for both race and class - I'd just like to see a little greater expansion on Dubbel's character in-biography. You say he has a violent but slow-burning temper; could an anecdote from his childhood (little though it may have to remember) reflect this? The scene in the arena reflects well his current status and aspirations, but I'd like to see his personality fleshed out and the alignment driven home.
Once that's done, we should be ready to go.
Thanks!

Some final notes on character creation:
- Please note that racial adjustments for players with subraces are skin based and thus get applied after getting in game.
- Only two ability scores can be less than 10 and only one can be less than 8 after racial adjustments
- Brownies, when selecting a head, the head you choose on the halfling selection will correspond to that numbered head for elves (for example, clicking right 6 times on the head selection during character creation will take the 6th head when clicking right on the elf creation)
- Half-giants and ogres, please ask for a GM (type /dm Anyone here?) if you would like to change to a custom skin.
Good luck... with yet another Half-Giant.
