Bio:
Since the time of her birth, Brunhilde was expected to follow the family tradition of becoming a cleric of vorax.
From an early age she learned teh tenets of the faith, committing them to her heart and soul. She knew nothing else and was content with her life as it was. Her family has lived and served in the priesthood at the Bloody Gate since time immemorial. Life here has taught her family the value of the tenets of the faith nad how they have lead to the survival of the dwarves and the victory of the gate.
Her family was made up of the various orders of the faith: Battle priests, scholars, and champions. Her family had dedicated themselves to the faith since the great great great great great great great great grandsire of her clan, Haldrid Hammerfall, sat on the council of elders.
At the age of 20, she was expected to enter the temple and begin her training to enter the service of Vorax. So she was sent to Ulgrids fortress in the Brecht mountains.
In the beginning her days were spent learning the art of combat and the use of dwarven weapons, fulfilling her duties to the temple, learning the ancient histories of her faith, learning to focus her mind to call upon the power of Vorax.
In the early days it was seen her skills lended Brunhilde to the scholarly sect of Vorax and she was sent to learn in the great libraries of the temple. She spent hours and hours cataloging and researching and copying the various texts and scrolls. Learning to be a counselor and educator.
It was there that she discovered some very old books. Books of magic lore. These book intrigued her, especially since Vorax did not trust the use of such power. Why were such books within the ancient archives of the temple?
She assumed there was a good reason and that the elders knew of them, so she didnt question their presence.
Still...her thoughts were drawn to them.
Brunhilde was always considered exceptionally intelligent. She had a knack for language and lore and her appetite for knowledge seemed insatiable. The elders thought she was an exceptional pupil nad gave her great leeway when it came to her spending time in the library. Leaving her alone to study and further her understadning of the faith. Her mind was never idle, and so long as she kept up her other training and duties they did not mind.
She spent many hours studyng the books. She found them easy to understand and eventually she decided to start trying to experiment. To see if she could command the power the tomes offered.
Though the knowledge she found was limited. Her training in the temple taught her how to focus her mind, to concentrate. As she studied the tomes of magic she found the tingle of the magic coursed thru her body. She felt the touch of the weave as much as she felt Voraxs touch when she asked him to aid her in healing and protecting thsoe in need.
She soon learned all she could from the knowledge she found in the library. Knowing her time at the temple was still far from finished, she decided to instead, keep practicing and trying to learn on her own.
Her practice sessions were soon discovered and she was summarily chastised and forbidden from practicing anymore. Vorax had no love of magic and she should not either!
She tried to obey her teachers, she asked questions constantly, and they rebuked her. How could something that felt so right, that could help others be wrong?
Her brothers that were in the temple quickly heard of her indiscretions and reacted harshly! They told her that she needed to forget magic, that her interest in such tricks could lead to her expulsion from the clergy, that she woudl bring dishonor to her family!
For a time she obeyed. She shut her mouth, she returned to her studies and quietly obeyed, though in her heart she felt Vorax gave her the desire and ability to study magic,
One day a dwarf came by and was granted access to the library. Brunhilde was studying when he arrived. He was an odd dwarf with slightly bluish hair and an odd manner about him. The scholars were obviously not to keen on this dwarf for some reason. The librarian asked Brunhilde to help him search for waht he was seeking.
As she aided this strange dwarf, she found him very polite and intriguing. As they searched for the knowledge he sought they struck up a conversation and she realized that he was a mage! A dwarven wizard! This truly inspired Brunhilde. After a day or two of searching the histories of how the strongholds were once connected she decided to confide in this strange dwarf.
He was very polite and asked about how she came to be familiar with the arcane. Brunhilde quickly showed him the tomes she had found. He questioned her at length about them, how they came to be in the library etc. He then asked her to show him what she could do.
It had been a long night, and she was tired but determined to impress this wandering mage. She summoned all of her focus and concentration, and then she cast. At that moment one of the librarians entered and surprised the dwarf and Brunhilde. Just as she was casting a light, a Flare erupted nad set a stack of books on fire!
The librarian was scared senseless for moment, the books caught more books on fire and Brunhilde was stupeified at waht she ahd done. The books were quickly starteing to ignite some scrolls on the table and soon a blaze was going! There wasnt enough water at hand to put it out and so the strange dwarf uttered some arcane words and a a freezing blast of ice and cold extinguished the flames!
The incident raised quite a stir in the temple! The dwarf, Erk, was asked to leave the temple as he was seen to be disrupting things and fomenting chaos within hte temple! As he had found what he was seeking he left though he did ask to speak on Brunhildes behalf but was told that would not be required.
Later, Brunhilde was brought before hte council who oversaw teh young adepts. She was told that though she had much potential, the father frowned on the arcane arts. If she continued to pursue knowledge of the arcane she woudl be branded a heretic and expelled from the church! For no priest of Vorax would ever practice the arcane! The arts of trickery were an affront to all vorax held dear, regardless of one lone dwarfs (erk) status amongst their peers.
After returning home in disgrace, her family said she would not be allowed to enter their clan hall until she found a way to redeem herself in the eyes of Vorax and the church. And that she needed to forget anything about the arcane and ask the forgiveness of the church elders to be let back into the priesthood.
In the end, Brunhilde found she could not forget waht she had learned nor the example oerk had set for her as a battle mage of vorax. No matter how hard she tried, how much she prayed to vorax to cleanse her heart of the desoire to learn the arts arcane she could not. In the end, her family felt thye had no choice but to expel her. Upon expelling her fromt he clan home, they put her up in the local inn and she worked as a barmaid. She was heartbroken and in time became bitter. When her family entered the inn, they would avoid her. Her mother came in from time to time to see that she was doing alright and to see if she had come to her senses.
Brunhildes sorrow grew, and the thought that she could not follow the path that she knew in her heart was correct. She loved Vorax and all he stood for. Observing his holy days, and aiding those in need as she could, etc.
She still tried to gather what knowledge she could afford from the local traders that still came to the gate. She studying tha arcane on her own and doing her best to keep it hidden from others. Since many knew she was expelled from the church for being practicing the arcane.
Then came the rebuilding of the gate. It was a time of celebration nad hard work. All were called upon to do what they could. Warlord Varka entered the gate witha mighty contingent of dwarves. Amongst them was Erk! Brunhildes heart leapt in her breast. If only she could contact him.
As it happened, Erk was assigned to negotiate with traders from Katherian and they were to do this in the tavern. Brunhilde quickly brought Erk a beer sadi hello. He seemed to recognize her nad asked after her health. The Katherians then walked in and Erk had other matters to focus upon. Halfway thru his chat, the call came out that the gate was being attacked! The call to arms had gone out!
Everyone who was able was to take a bow and line the walls to fight. Warlord Varka and his contingent quickly formed up at the gate nad charged forward to attack the enemy who was beseiging the gate! From the ramparts Brunhilde watched the battle and saw magic fly from the dwarf mage cut down several giants. She was enraptured with this dwarf mage. It wa at that moment she realized what she must do and vowed to contact him and ask him to teach her.
Later Erk returned tothe tavern to finish his negotiations. After Brunhilde saw that they were down. She tried to talk to Erk and ask him her hearts desire. For him to teach her to touch the weave. He had to go, but said that she should seek him out tothe south when she was ready and had permission from her family.
It took a week or so for Brunhilde to gather the courage to seek out her family. She was goign to ask permission to do something she knew that her family fundamentally despised and had caused her expulsion from the clan home!
After gathering her courage, she sent a message to her family seekign and audience. It was a week before they answered and granted her request.
The audience did not go well at all. Her family said she was going to be denied entrance to the halls of Vorax if she chose to follow this path, that her family would be disgraced and she woudl be spitting in the face of her clans tradition! It did not matter that a dwarf wizard had earned the honor and respect of others nad the thanks of the king. No Hammerfist was EVER going to be a mage! If she couldnt bring herself to enter the service of vorax as a cleric, if she continued her willfull ways then she was no Hammerfist and could do as she pleased.
Brunhilde left dejected, and bitter. Her hopes dashed upon the rocks of the mountains. Her families ultimatum was more than she could bear. In the end, her bitterness turned to resolve.
Then she decided. She could not return to life solely in the clergy, nor could she live without studying the arcane arts. She woudl leave the gate and her family. She would seek out Erk and he would be her teacher in the arcane. She would earn the the respect of her family and return one day to show them she was worthy of the Hammerfist name.
And so her journey begins...
//OOC:
Erk is dead, but she does not know this obviously.
Because of her experiences with the clergy of Vorax she is very leery of them. Her faith in Vorax is still very strong regardless of the feelings of those close minded dwarfs and part of her journey is to justify that being a wizard can be compatible with the tenets of Vorax. She believes in Vorax, and all he stands for, and it is vorax who set her on her path. In the end its Vorax who grants his blessings upon hte clergy and not the church.
Umm.. cant find the list for the 3 items to agree to for clerics. But i agree to them. Once i find them i will post them.
edit 2 :
1. I have read and understand the tenets of vorax and will adhere to them as best as i can.
2. Brunhilde understands the dogma of the church, and even though she was expelled and labelled a heretic since clergy dont practice magic. She follows all the tenets of Vorax regardless. Vorax distrusts magic, he does not forbid its practice. Brunhilde sees her desire to learn the arts arcane as something vorax instilled in her.
3. Her clothing shows the colors of vorax, though she does not normally wear the heavy armors associated with the wandering battlepriests. She does use the battle axe as that is the preferred weapon of vorax. Her shield when she uses one will bear the symbol of Vorax.
