Katô Takamoto was born in a small village in the east, his mother and father were peasants like the rest of the villagers, his father worked in the fields and his mother made household items. All of the villagers and the people in the surrounding area were uneducated, but a few of the young men of this village got the opportunity, because there was an old man who lived in the village who was well educated. No one knew exactly who he was but the rumor was that he had once been a Samurai, but now disgraced, now tradition demands that he should have taken his own life but no one cared, some even thought of it as a silent protest against their totalitarian leader.
So Katô was educated he was given instruction in reading and writing as well as melee combat. Now Katô was not given an entire education, the old man was growing old and frail, as well he taught many other children at the same time. Despite this Katô became very adamant that he would become a professional sword fighter. So at 19 he took up his few possessions and left home. He would have liked to stay in the east but the social restraints forced him to travel else where. He wandered taking up odd jobs, he tried to only take the more dignified jobs, jobs he thought suited his profession but his stomach could be very persuasive.
Just recently Katô has come to the village of Hlint, he has promised himself that this would be the turning point in his life.
