Welcome to the Layonara forums!

Layonara is so much more than a game. We started off as a tabletop Dungeons and Dragons campaign more than a decade ago. Since then we have developed into a fantasy world with as much compelling and engrossing detail as you will find anywhere.

Our current showcase is a Neverwinter Nights version of Layonara, where our world comes to life in a finely polished persistent world which you can play free of charge. These forums are set up to support and accentuate our player's experiences, but it goes far beyond that.

After years of passionate effort, our world is so well developed, so detailed, so refined that any of the handbooks, maps, historical accounts, legends, descriptions of artifacts, creature reports, character biographies, short stories, novels, movies and original art which populate these forums can surely serve as resources or inspiration for your own fantasy endeavors, whatever they may be. And our world is endlessly evolving, so resources are frequently added and updated.

There are also years of sage advice and commentary on role-playing, gaming and online community development stored in these forums. If camaraderie is what you seek, we offer that too. Our community is as active and supportive as you're likely to find on the internet. In short, these forums are a resource for you to use for whatever purpose or project brought you here.

We're confident that you will find what you are looking for, and likely, substantially more.

Please be our guest and browse around the forums which are available to you. As you do, keep in mind that you are sampling only a portion of what Layonara has to offer. Membership in our community is free, and allows you to establish a Layonara identity to pose your questions and share your thoughts on the forums. Default How to use this forum

Character Development Quests (CDQs) are especially tailored quest that allow players extra resources, such as GM Time/guidance/effort to affect large-scale character changes an development (Never minor things). CDQs are not a way for players to get a private quest for themselves or their friends. That is not the reason for CDQs and never will be. Many people comment on how they can't make scheduled quests so they are going to request a CDQ. This can not happen in any form, the small amount of time DMs should not be eaten away by unnecessary CDQs.

Please make sure you request a CDQ only if it is needed for a character, not because you want a quest to be run for you or your friends. Look at the calendar these days, there are a great number of quests and the team is quite large. Your chances of being able to join a scheduled are very high and with a little patience you will be developing your character in the many quests that are ran each month. So, before requesting a CDQ (or GroupCDQ), step back and think about things.

1. Is there a real and valid point to the outcome of the quest (good or bad)?
2. Is it needed now?
3. Does it need to have GM involvement at all?
4. Is it such a small CDQ request that in actuality it will just be wasting the time of a GM running the CDQ?

If after careful evaluation of these terms, you still believe you require a Character Development quest then please read the rest of this post for instructions on how to do so.

In this forum you will find two things. The first is a sticky indicating the process and rules in which the CDQs will be handled (This thread). Then right after that you will find a specific thread to each one of our DMs.

Rules of CDQs

1.
A player can only have 1 CDQ per 2 month period.

2. A character must be at least level 10 to have a CDQ.
a. The only exception is a character looking to move into a PrC before level 10.

3. A CDQ must have a valid purpose, and this will be enforced by the GM’s running the quest. Don’t request a CDQ just because you want your own personal quest or a quest for your friends.
a. A CDQ to move into a prestige class is valid.
b. A CDQ needing DM intervention to help a character change realize itself is valid.

4. CDQ's can not last more than a total of 6 hours or two game sessions, whichever comes first. On top of that a CDQ must be completed within three RL weeks once the first session has been run.
5. CDQ's DO NOT HAVE ANY XP REWARDS. Not to the person having the quest run nor its participants. This was done to avoid player abuse of this process.

How to request a CDQ
Each of the stickied DM threads in this forum will contain the times that those DMs normally are around to quest. Basically what you as a player need to do is post your request in the personalized DM sticky. Something along the lines of "RHIZOME - CDQ for Triba Gues". And then detail the information and desires of your CDQ. Now, I understand that some of you won't like to post things that other players shouldn't know about your character, so in that case you would simply post as above but instead of a detailed information on your CDQ you would post a brief summary and indicate that you have PMed the corresponding DM.

For example: "RHIZOME - CDQ for Triba Gues" Hey Rhiz, this is a request for a CDQ for Triba, I want her to enter a secret thieves' guild and due to the nature of this I will be PMing you with the details. Thanks! Secondly, the fact that the times for each DM will be posted does not mean that you are all bound to those DMs. If you know of a DM or have talked to one that you would particularly like to run your CDQ and you know he/she is willing to change their times a bit to run it, then by all means post under their thread. DMs will have 10 days from the day of the initial post to reply the request and unless the DM is under a short or long term leave then the following rules will take place. - Once a DM has acknowledged your request the both of you will have FOUR weeks to setup times and details for the CDQ. By the end of this four week period the quest should have a date stamp. So in the above example, I submit my request to Rhizome today, he has 10 days to acknowledge my request, once that is done we both have 4 weeks to work out the details and times for my CDQ and once that is worked we should have a date for my CDQ. - If for any reason the DM doesn't respond within the 10 day period (barring known leave of abscence) then please see if you can submit your request with another DM. Many here have busy lives at times and is hard keeping up with the pace. - If a date for the quest has not been established after the 4 week setup period, the next NON-plot related quest that DM will run will automatically be the CDQ for the player. This means that no one will get set aside as the DMs will have to run the quest no matter what. The only disclaimer to this rule is that if the player cancels twice to the DM, then the CDQ is of and that player won't be allowed to post for a CDQ for a month since his original submission. - To keep from DMs from being swamped by requests, each DM post a number between 2 and 5, dictating the amount of CDQs they are willing to run each month. So if you see their request thread and see their limits of CDQs posted then please refrain from posting on that DMs thread and either submit it to another or wait.- - Please when requesting a CDQ make sure you post the times in which you are available to quest so that the scheduling can be done in a faster manner. - Many DMs recieve quite a large number of PMs daily. And as much as we try to not miss any, sometimes it happens. So if you have sent a PM concerning details to the CDQ or scheduling or anything else, please make sure you post in the thread with a date attached to the post. That way you cover your back and the DM is able to keep up to date.

The waiting period is 1 CDQs per 2 months. That meaning 1 CDQ shot can last a couple of sessions. So even if you request only one it doesn't mean that you only get one scheduled session but as long as that series of "events" is running then you are good. However when the DM dictates that that series of events is over you will have to wait the two month period to apply again. And that means that it can be at any stopping point even if you did not achieve your ultimate goal.
Example: Johnny wants to become the best chef in lower mistone. The DM schedules the event. He has 4 objectives to defeat in his head for Johnny to become the best chef. Johnny is told of objective number one (or he finds out, whatever). He spends 3 sessions doing objective number 1 and finally he is succesful. Johnny is still not the best chef in lower mistone, however for this 2 month period no more quests will be run for Johnny to reach that objective since the DM deemed appropriate to end it there.

Additional Notes Regarding CDQs

Standard classes -- When a character wishes to multi-class and it was not part of the original character submission, there are two options available:
1) Resubmit your character to include the 2nd class for approval
2) Request and run a CDQ instead of a resubmission. The outcome of the CDQ will serve as an approval (or not in the case of failure) for multi-classing that character. In either case, your character's RP and Character Development thread must reflect the desired change. If the character fails his/her CDQ for multi-classing, that character may only make further attempts at multi-classing through a CDQ. Further attempts are subject to the 2 real-life month waiting period between CDQs. Prestige Classes -- A Prestige Class (PrC) MUST be approved by the Character GMs before a CDQ can be run for that character to be allowed to take levels in the chosen PrC. As above, your character's RP and Character Development thread must reflect a move toward the new class.
