Default New Character Submission - Karvus Gurhund

Character: Karvus Gurhund
Age: 27
Gender: Male
Classes: Barbarian/Rogue/Bear Warrior
Race: Human
Alignment: Chaotic Good

Biography:

Karvus Gurhund is a tall man with broad shoulders and a barrel-chest. Long mahogany hair covers a face with sharp, well-defined features. He is attractive, though his skin is weather-worn, and shows the tell-tale signs of scars never healed properly. Doe brown, one good eye glistens with vigor and excitement, the other hidden under a dark leather patch. He carries himself casually and with a kind of radiant confidence, and seems quick to burst into boisterous laughter or flash a wolfish grin.

Kar the Youth

Kar was born the illegitimate son of Catria Gornia, the lovely daughter of Dervus Gornia, shrewd and wealthy merchant and aristocrat in the port city of Lelion. Told little of his biological father, Kar was raised in the household of his grandfather. He was a bright child, insatiably curious and eager to learn. Catria nurtured these traits and he began to read and write at an early age. Despite the closeness with his mother, the few memories Kar retains of his earliest years were that of tension and unhappiness. Catria's pregnancy was an embarrassment to her father and his reputation. She quickly fell out of his graces. The relationship between father and daughter was one of emotional abuse and scorn. Catria was kept like a prisoner in his home lest she further blemish his name. His treatment of Karvus was no more kind. Strict rules and regular beatings were meant to keep the bastard in line. Karvus was forbidden to carry the Gornia name.

As the boy reached his 7th year, Catria fell ill. A terrible cough and fatigue slowly drained her over the course of the next year. After a brief time a private physician was consulted, but after a poor prognosis the elder Gornia was content to cut his loses. Her condition only continued to decay, until she passed the winter after Kar's 8th year. On her deathbed, Catria called her son to her side and told him the truth of his parentage. She told him of a long trip to the northern isles on her father's behalf. She spoke of successful trading, and spoke more of a young warrior named Turruk who stole her heart, and of the night that bound them. She had planned to run from the Gornia household and stay with him forever after, but the plot had been uncovered by her father upon her return and she never saw him again.

After Catria's death, Dervus was alternately cruel and neglectful of the illegitimate child. His carefully cultivated trade niche began to crumble and within only a couple months, it was on the verge of collapse. Karvus took the brunt of his frustration. Unable to bare anymore, Kar broke away in the night and ran to the docks stole a small rowboat and took off for the north - the only clue he had of his parentage. A storm broke out only a day into the journey and broke his little boat on the waves..

Kar the barbarian

Floating among timbers and barely clinging to life, he was found battered and broken an untold time later by a barbarian longboat and taken with them to Karshin. He was brought to the settlement of the Longclaw tribe and nursed back to health by a village wise woman. When he was well enough, the tribal chieftain took him aside and questioned him about his circumstances. Karvus refused him at first, but eventually came around. The Chief admired the boys spirit and as his wounds healed the decision was made. The boy was given the option of staying in the tribe.

So it was that Karvus grew up among the Longclaw tribesmen, and was trained in their ways of life and ways of war. As years came and went he matured and earned a place among them. Eventually he came to take the surname Gurhund - the Longclaw name bestowed upon him by the tribe's chieftain. This, too was not to last. While they had taken him in, Karvus never truly felt at home. Worse, he was no close to finding his true parentage. Torn between the culture he was born into and the culture that was now his home, restlessness set in. With the blessings of the tribes elders, Kar took off on his own to find his place in the world.

Kar the Raider

As his journeys wound throughout the isles and back to Mistone once more, Kar began to refamiliarize himself with the "civilized" world. He slowly lost sight of his original quest to find his parentage and give up. Like his hated grandfather, Kar was naturally quick witted and opportunistic. He found that he was good with people and a shrewd negotiator. Part charming rogue and part barbarian savage, he survives alternately living off the land, selling his services as a mercenary, bodyguard and go-between, and adventuring, scavenging ruins, and robbing the carriages of wealthy aristocrats with lax security. Though of a good heart, his quest for identity has become a kind of self-consuming narcissism. Motivated now mostly by material gain, conquest and fame, and a guided by a loose sense of ethics, he seeks to carve out a place for himself in the world (perhaps to compensate for a lack of belonging so many years prior).

This is where we begin our story...

The future of Karvus Gurhund
Though not required for the submission, I wanted to give a sense of what I wanted to accomplish in this character. I'd like to see him grow and mature emotionally and spiritually. I'd like to see him gain a sense of community and responsibility. Eventually I want him to find out what happened to his father, and I see these factors eventually leading him into becoming a Bear Warrior, identifying himself with its spirit and championing a cause bigger than himself.

Tentatively, the level split for now is Barb 15, Rogue 5. If he qualifies for Bear Warrior (Which I understand you cannot yet approve) It will be Closer to Barb 10, Rogue 5, Bear Warrior 5 (with Bear Warrior levels taken from then on out).

Let me know if anything needs clarified or changed. I look forward to playing with you.
Thank you for your time.

Great story and submission we just have three things to deal with.

1. Please remove the bear warrior from the heading.
2. Lelion is now called Leringard
3. How do you reconcile robbing people at sword point and being chaotic good?

Thanks

Thanks! I was working with the handbook, so that's probably why it was out of date. As for the alignment issue, I think it's a case of ..having something in mind that I wasn't exactly sure how to state on here. I'll try to clarify it some.

A part of his psychology runs along the vaguely Robin-hood-esq lines regarding wealth and station vs. moral standpoint. His experiences with his grandfather (who was as a whole an unethical tyrant, and a two-faced businessman) ingrained in him this picture of the wealthy elite being fundamentally corrupt - he relates on some level nearly all of the pampered aristocracy to the cruelty and corruption he experienced as a child. While he has a good heart overall and *some* semblance of personal morals, he has a broad picture of the upper class as being evil, and therefor fair game. It's a sort of robin hood sort of ideology, except that he steals from the rich and..gives to himself (and often a few barmaids, but thats beyond the scope of this)

It should be said he is never quick to violence, he tends to use more persuasion and intimidation. He is also somewhat discriminating in his robbery. While the elite as a whole are corrupt and deserving of robbery, individual people can be considered "good" in his mind if he has had reason to think so. (Think in terms of how a Misanthrope can have a hatred of humanity as a whole, but still carry on normal relationships with specific individuals..its more of a general outlook than a hard law of behavior.) As a whole, he'd prefer to slip away with loot while they were asleep than to actually attack a caravan.

Hope that helps some:

Yes it would be very different if he were slipping away in the night with their goods. But if he is robbing at sword point then there is an intent/willingness to do harm for the goal of self gain. And that is not very good at all .

Again, I sort of saw it more as a bluffing sort of game the ideal outcome being that no one gets hurt at all. How would I sort of.. phrase it in the story so as to have a meaning we could agree on in the definition of the alignment?

Thank you for the extra work.
Your character has been approved.

Server address is west.layonara.com

Some final notes on character creation:
  • Please note that racial adjustments for players with subraces are skin based and thus get applied after getting in game.
  • Only two ability scores can be less than 10 and only one can be less than 8 after racial adjustments
  • Brownies, when selecting a head, the head you choose on the halfling selection will correspond to that numbered head for elves (for example, clicking right 6 times on the head selection during character creation will take the 6th head when clicking right on the elf creation)
  • Half-giants and ogres, please ask for a GM (type /dm Anyone here?) if you would like to change to a custom skin.

Have fun!
