Thordan was raised in the Greypeak Mountains in a small crafting/mining community. Most of those there were worshipers of Dorand, and as such made frequent trips to Lar which was not far away. It was here that he began learning the art of armor crafting. Over time he began to become quite adept at it and decided to take it up on his own back home. From that point on he never left clan-hold except to go mining and to return. After some years his clan-hold began getting raided more and more frequently by giants from the upper peaks. Now, although he new little of war, Thordan knew plenty about its tools. Therefore when it was finally decided that the clan would take the fight to the giants to defend the hold, he was included in the party as the armorer.
Upon the march up into the peaks a blizzard struck cutting off the pass home and also any retreat. The blizzard also slowed the progress of the war party causing them to go through more stores than were originally anticipated. Tragedy hit when after becoming exhausted by the storm and by the lack of adequate provisions they encountered the giants that had been raiding the clan hold. The giants were well rested and provisioned. Further they too were marching for war, headed back down the peaks to raid the hold again. The tired, slightly famished party of dwarves was annihilated. Thordan took a mighty blow to the side of the head leaving a massive scar that disfigures him to a point to this very day. While he lay dieing in the snow Thordan saw himself arriving in a large hall where feasting and revelry was occurring. And there at the head of the hall was the all-father of dwarves Vorax. Just as Thordan was realizing where he was though Vorax looked up from his merriment and looked Thordan in the eye and gave him a small smile. The next thing Thordan knew he was waking up half frozen in blood soaked snow. His head wound still bled, but not as freely any longer. Looking around himself, he discovered that he was indeed the only survivor of the war party. With the storm having abated, Thordan rounded up what provisions were left on his fallen comrades and returned to clan-hold, only to find that with the war party gone, it had proven easy crushing for the giants. His home was destroyed as well.
He managed to make his way to Lar, where he relayed his story of sorrow. When he got to the part about having looked upon Vorax and his subsequent return to this world, he was ridiculed and told it was merely a hallucination brought on by the head wound. Even though he was repeatedly reminded by the good healers of Dorand tending to him that his experience was not real, that he never visited the Hallowed Halls, nor was looked upon by Vorax, he refused to ever stop believing in what he saw. Eventually, he was well enough to get about his life again having recovered the best he could from his wounds. He also decided that if Vorax had sent him back, there was a reason for it, and that would be to do Vorax’s will to the best of his ability. Although it was agreed that he was quite mad by all the dwarves of the community around Lar, it was also agreed that something needed to be done about the giant threat. So, since Thordan still knew where last the giant clan called home he left with another war party to seek them out. This time the giants were wiped from the face of the mountain. During the battle Thordan could feel the presence of Vorax in his very being. Now he knew where he belonged for certain, taking righteous war to the unrighteous enemies of the innocent.
Thordan decided not to return to Lar, although it was the closest thing he now had to a home. He instead decided to venture forth to Haven and the Temple of Vorax there for divine education and then from there into the world to spread the might of Vorax as far as possible. This is how he eventually arrived in Hlint.
From there you know most of what has happened to Thordan. He became interested in learning what evils were paramount to be crushed by the wrath of Vorax. He sought out sources of knowledge and information. That is how he discovered Ozy. Their debates and conversations eventually led Thordan down his avowed path to get into the Library (which you pretty much know all about). He was selected to serve on the High Council (which since the selections are made by divine dreams given to Quintayne only reaffirms Thordan’s belief that he was indeed returned to life on that mountain by Vorax to serve his greater will).
Like most dwarves and especially those of Vorax, he is relatively mistrustful of arcane magics and has little love for mages.
Thordan has many acquaintances, but few he calls friend or devotes loyalty to. His first loyalty is to Vorax, and that leaves room for little else. This is a reason he will never really have much interest in women. (That and he finds himself wholly unsuited to romance.) He is also loyal to the High Council as a body. Those that he has taken into his confidence get his unwavering loyalty.
One person that he has referred to as a friend though is Ozy (who he never calls by Ozy) and as a result Ozy has an incredible amount of loyalty from him. (But not blind loyalty) He is also convinced that although there are definitely faults in Ozy’s character, that the redeeming qualities in Ozy can only get stronger through longer associations with Thordan. At least as far as Thordan is concerned, they have what is probably the 2nd strangest friendship around, 2nd only to Nathan and Quint.
Another friendship that is rich in Thordan’s life is that with the Halfling Triba Gues. He ahs accompanied her on many an adventure and she the same for him. She traveled with him to Berhagen when he made his vows to Vorax to see to it that dwarves once again were able to get there and be welcome. Together they fought side by side to help mend the Broken Forest. And again they fought together when Thordan lead an army in the defense of Dregar from Blood’s general Khain. Then lastly she was also there when Thordan made strides to get to the Great Library, and then finally there with him when he finally made it. Throughout it all they have also formed a rather strong trading pact and became a powerhouse of craftable goods unto themselves.
Waha Hammerheart is Thordan’s closest dwarven friend, though by affiliation with the Red Capps, Thordan also has an affinity towards Duran.
Serenity is a friend he adopted as almost a wayward niece. Her devotion to Pyretechon was less a bone for contention and more a situation in which Thordan took the time to constantly educate her. Thordan sopent many days and nights educating by example the err of her ways. Regardless of all the events that occurred, Thordan sees his influence as a major influence in Serenity’s conversion from Pyretechon. Thordan also featured prominently in the conversion of Matilda from Corath to Toran, thought he final influences were applied by Remiel.
Rhizome is as much teacher for Thordan as he is friend. In many ways they have similar life goals, but the means by which they mean to achieve them are very different. His friendship to Rhizome was greatly enhanced when he went out adventuring one night and was afterwards induced into the Red Caps. This affiliation has brought Thordan a great sense of pride and joy.
He is a member of the Battle Priest sect of the clergy of Vorax.
He still finds solace in the forge and anvil creating superior works of armor.
He had a strange encounter when traveling with Kasha and Jaderia one night. They, along with Ozy, and Triba, went to visit Queen Allurial. She referred to him as Thordan of the Lost, and cut off. Although at the time he accepted that she was referring to him being clanless and of being of the lost/destroyed clan, the incident has always nagged at the back of his mind that there cold have perhaps been something else.
His education at the temple was highly focused on the ways and means of war as he was from the very first day most decidedly a battle priest and not a scholar or Paladin.
Although the favored weapon of his kind is the Battleaxe, he uses a warhammer instead because it was the most logical extension of his being, given that he had spent his whole life wielding a hammer already. It just seemed to make more sense to continue wielding a tool that was already so familiar to him, than to spend time perfecting the use of the battleaxe. (Although he can use many different weapons should the need arise.) Although an average fighter, he is a highly above average analyst and student of war.
The most significant event in Thordan’s life to this date was the war on Dregar. It was during this war that he aided in founding the Triumverate (a leadership representing each of the Churches Vorax, Toran, and Rofirein) and met on 2 occasions with the General Superior of the Order of Battle Priests. Although Khain was driven from Dregar, the General escaped to sea headed East.
That is in essence everything about Thordan and then some. As far as future development goes, Thordan is currently at a bit of a crossroads. He easily sees himself traveling a few paths and I am expecting to let the outcome of the ECDQ to decide the path he does take.
Some goals for the future of Thordan’s are:
• To erect a mountain fortress that will be in itself a great stronghold of Vorax. This fortress would serve as both a place of Dwarven strength in the lands, but would also be a school where the art of war is taught to those that come looking to become more than just mere fighters.
• To mold and shape himself personally into the perfect weapon in the service of Vorax. (But not Sacred Fist. Thordan need that armor crafting ability.)
• Continuing to lead as much as he can by example and work his way up the hierarchy of the Battle Priests (though he has no political ambitions at all.)
To be honest I really have little clue as to what sort of development should be in line for Thordan. I was hoping to get some input on that from whoever winds up running the quest.
As to whom I would like to run it, given our history and so forth, Rhizome seems the best choice. If for whatever reason this becomes non-doable, then any ECDQ for Thordan should likely include Rhizome the character into the plans. My availability is rather open as far as scheduling parameters go. I would care for some input from Leanthar on this one if at all possible.
