Welcome to the Layonara forums!

Layonara is so much more than a game. We started off as a tabletop Dungeons and Dragons campaign more than a decade ago. Since then we have developed into a fantasy world with as much compelling and engrossing detail as you will find anywhere.

Our current showcase is a Neverwinter Nights version of Layonara, where our world comes to life in a finely polished persistent world which you can play free of charge. These forums are set up to support and accentuate our player's experiences, but it goes far beyond that.

After years of passionate effort, our world is so well developed, so detailed, so refined that any of the handbooks, maps, historical accounts, legends, descriptions of artifacts, creature reports, character biographies, short stories, novels, movies and original art which populate these forums can surely serve as resources or inspiration for your own fantasy endeavors, whatever they may be. And our world is endlessly evolving, so resources are frequently added and updated.

There are also years of sage advice and commentary on role-playing, gaming and online community development stored in these forums. If camaraderie is what you seek, we offer that too. Our community is as active and supportive as you're likely to find on the internet. In short, these forums are a resource for you to use for whatever purpose or project brought you here.

We're confident that you will find what you are looking for, and likely, substantially more.

Please be our guest and browse around the forums which are available to you. As you do, keep in mind that you are sampling only a portion of what Layonara has to offer. Default Greetings from Nagash :)

Hi,

Saw your world and it was highly reccomended as a world that is run well and isn't full of irritations, stat padding and 'whorings'. I'm hailing from down under (Australia).

I had a quick question about character creation, on the list I saw that we wern't allowed to have more than one stat at 8 or less, however I wanted to make a mage akin to Raistlin (if you know the character) and I was thinking of making it physically weak, but higher charisma, wisdom and intelligence.

I also wanted to ask, if you are ressurected, do you still lose a soul fragment/shard (i.e. does it count towards your 10 deaths).

Thanks,
Nagash von Ritter

Hello and welcome. To answer your questions more accurately:

You may have one stat as low as 6 and no more than two stats that are 8 or less. Please also note that these stat limits are after all subrace adjustments (if any) have been applied, which unfortunately do not show until one gets into game with the character.

Regarding deaths: You get more than 10 deaths, but each death carries a chance of Soul Strand loss equal in percentage to your character's level (1d100). The trigger even is death, not respawning or being raised/resurrected. Also, any deaths from level 1-3 carry no risk of Soul Strand loss at all.

Hi and welcome!

The "worst" stat configuration that one can have is 6, 8 and then rest 10+ (in other words... maximum of one below 8 and another below 10). It's a fixed rule with no exceptions being made (and also remember that it's the ability scores after subrace modifiers!).

8 is already a very low score where 10 is the average for a human population. In terms of strength, 8 can probably be considered being the strength of a 12-year-old "normal human child"... A score of 6 is so extremely low that it's kind of difficult to imagine it in real life when applied to a human being (6-year-old child?). So... erh... crippling a third stat below 10 is kind of... um... tricky... as one is approaching the inability to have a functional character.

A character with the same physics as Raistlin should be quite possible to create! I can't remember his exact ability scores... but I would imagine it being like:

9 str... 8 con... superb int... high dex... high cha... dunno about wis... average to high?

Ok thanks, I read it already but I wans't sure of how it worked exactly in pen and paper generally you have no penalties when ressurected but penalties if not of course (that is staying dead) but however you tend to die a lot easier in NWN.

What I was thinking is a character with evenly 'maxed' charisma, intelligence and wisdom but very low strength, dexterity and constitution as this fit my character story better than higher abilities, i.e. the story revolving around a character his physical body is withered and useless but who has a strong mind and force of personality.

Well I'll try to make it according to the specs, but is there flexibility like in normal DnD if I have a good backstory?

We're not going to approve variances on the stats, regardless of story. You still have to stay within the parameters we have set. This is nothing personal, just a matter of keeping everyone on the same page and to avoid min-maxing and the like. You could do your "weak" stats as 6, 8 and 10, for example, in order of CON, STR and DEX.

We know this is limiting in some ways, but it also avoids other issues when people have 3-4 dump stats and then don't RP those quite properly.

That's no problem, I understand that some people will seek to avoid or misuse the system and as such you will have to force rules in the interests of consistancy and avoiding abuse.

Can you chose opposition schools in Layonara also, or are they hard coded?

The schools of magic, as I understand, are hard-coded into the Bioware system. It'd be awesome if they weren't, but, alas, c'est la vie.

I, myself, have a character with incredibly difficult stats to play. High DEX, STR, and CON, with a WIS of 12, while the INT is 6 and the CHA is 8. A more challenging character I have never played, but Grok smash bads.

Hello there, welcome to layo.

Just a thought, I would strongly recommend you to avoid taking a schooling. You will be called often to take part of trips, and a schooling may be the difference in being truly helpful as a mage and one that just tags along. IMHO

Well the RP of a specialist should trump the mechanical usefulness part.

Plus, "Oh great Evoker, what have your studies taught you?" "Well, I've gained mastery over the weave through sheer force of intellect. And I use it to make things go BOOM!"

*fireball*

(In other words, Spell Schools ain't that bad if'n you know how to use 'em. )

Edit: To clarify, I'm paraphrasing this.

You do get 1 bonus spell/level which is awesome.

But besides that, I agree with the RP, it makes my character more unique than the generic mage and I'm happier with the RP ability. Besides it makes a story easier for me to make and fits in with my current story ideas.

Plus, on any GM quest a specialist would have an edge over a generalist mage with anything concerning his chosen school.

Personally, I always regretted going generalist with my wizard. Even epic spell focus doesn't make him a true specialist abjurer. :S

I agree, besides I only give up divination.

Oh it's worth noting that for the moment I'm living in Germany ^^.

I think residents of Adelaide and those of Germany are held in a similar regard by the rest of the world. Yes, that was purposely phrased that way! :P
