I was wondering if ti would be possible to integrate a critical failure to things.
One thing I loved about PnP when i played was that if I rolled a 1 or 2 then that meant i screwed up, usually very badly. I would then go to the chart of critical failure and roll again to see what i did. Something insanely funny could happen or insanely bad.
Right now in layo i only see it happening on climbing for the most part. Where when you fall..you make the reflex check and see if you take damage.
I understand game mechanics would probably make it difficult to some degree and most tend to think of damage rolls as a result. I think it could be expanded to bit more than that..i mean..a critical failure in my mind would negate any bonuses to skill points on the roll.
Right now, if someone rolls a 1 but has a skill points added that makes the roll an automatic 35 or something and then they make the save as if in dramatic fashion of a success...to me thats just silly.
If I roll a 1 (or its equivalent in the new system)...to me..that should bring about some sort of consequence. Not necesarily bad, but something. After all..even the smartest, most skilled of us screw up!
Examples:
A Mage:
He goes to cast his spell..he rolls a 1 on concentration to cast his fear some spell on the enemy.
Next thing he knows...he shot the fighter he was trying to support in the back...or if he was trying to buff him...for some reason the fighter is sapped of his str, knocked down or what have you.
Or maybe the mage is trying to shapeshift into a troll..despite all his concentration..for some reason the picture of a penguin pops into his head at the most inopportune moment and poof! Instead of the mighty fearsome troll..he now craves fish and a nice swim in a cold lake!
A fighter
He stands before a wimpy band of kobolds he has smashed to pulp many a time before..taking the poor creatures milk money.
He strides forward confident that their milk money shall once again be his. He goes to bash one in the head but then! He rolls a 1 on his attack roll...next thing he knows..hes lying face down in a puddle of icky goo hitting his head ona rock (knockdown equalavent or more fun...falling down drunk)

, or his sword seems to have left his grasp (disarm equivalent)! Or worse yet...he super expensive magical uber sword somehow sticks the kobold in front of him...but the bugger is so fat or the cut so horrendous that the sword bends and goes from a a +10 super kobold killer to a +2 hunk of metal barely fit for cutting bread!
Just some shining examples of what could happen. Anything from something really really dramatic to maybe something not quite so stupendous or exciting to maybe nothing at all.
It fun how people talk about bringing more reality into the game, usually to try and gain some advantage or make things all fluffy and safe.
Lets bring some chaos to the world too, since not all danger is from monsters...since the the reality is, even the most skilled person screws up sometimes.
