| Layonara MMO Please use this forum to discuss the Layonara MMO. | | Welcome to the Layonara forums!
Layonara is so much more than a game. We started off as a tabletop Dungeons and Dragons campaign more than a decade ago. Since then we have developed into a fantasy world with as much compelling and engrossing detail as you will find anywhere.
Our current showcase is a Neverwinter Nights version of Layonara, where our world comes to life in a finely polished persistent world which you can play free of charge. These forums are set up to support and accentuate our player's experiences, but it goes far beyond that.
After years of passionate effort, our world is so well developed, so detailed, so refined that any of the handbooks, maps, historical accounts, legends, descriptions of artifacts, creature reports, character biographies, short stories, novels, movies and original art which populate these forums can surely serve as resources or inspiration for your own fantasy endeavors, whatever they may be. And our world is endlessly evolving, so resources are frequently added and updated.
There are also years of sage advice and commentary on role-playing, gaming and online community development stored in these forums. If camaraderie is what you seek, we offer that too. Our community is as active and supportive as you're likely to find on the internet. In short, these forums are a resource for you to use for whatever purpose or project brought you here.
We're confident that you will find what you are looking for, and likely, substantially more.
Please be our guest and browse around the forums which are available to you. As you do, keep in mind that you are sampling only a portion of what Layonara has to offer. Membership in our community is free, and allows you to establish a Layonara identity to pose your questions and share your thoughts on the forums. | Cooking Skill(s) Something tells me information on Cooking should be provided...
What is likely implemented (a wild guess):
Baking
Frying
Sauteing
Grilling
Roasting
Smoking
Preserving (Salting, Canning, Jarring, Drying)
Boiling
Mixing
What would be ideally implemented:
Allowance for slight variations in recipes.

I can see two broad sorts of recipes: general and specific. Specific recipes have exact recipes to follow and a specific name. General recipes may require certain ingredients but would also have one or more "slots" to fill with other things.
So, let's say Cammie Cook is making some sausages. Maybe she'll make Highpass sausages, which are far and wide known to be a mild pork sausage with a very specific blend of fat, salt, and herbs; or maybe she'll make a more general "pork sausage" recipe that requires pork, fat, salt, and, say, three more ingredients. Those ingredient slots might be totally open, depending on the recipe, or they may be categories, like "vegetable" or "spice" or whatever. So, maybe the general pork sausage recipe requires pork, fat, salt, and then has two "herb/spice" slots and one "anything" slot.
The game may then understand it's a "pork sausage" regardless of what's in it and treat all pork sausages the same way. It would be pretty cool if it would label it "Pork Sausage with Mint and Fireflower" (or whatever), so that characters' various tastes might be better RP'd, but that's gravy, really.

| Re: Cooking Skill(s) That's sort of what I was thinking with the player-created/altered recipes.
One example of a casserole would consist of ham, cheese, noodles, carrots, mushroom soup, onion, garlic, and maybe some other spices.

| Re: Cooking Skill(s) Okay, without giving too much away, I would say this ... the cooking recipes are similar in design to those you see in the current version of NWN. What I mean by this is that you have general igredients that require basic components. So let's say you are making a cake ... you need dough so flour (ground from wheat), eggs, sugar and milk. And you have more exquiste recieps that require both the basics, but also require the abstract ingredients. Continuing with our example, let's say you are making a Cherry Cake, you would require the initial ingredients plus Cherry Juice and confectionary sugar instead of just standard sugar.
Rest assured that Rowana, Minerva, Honora are toiling diligently on some VERY creative recipes for the culinary specialist of Layonara. Also, I don't believe that burning yourself with oil will be in the initial release.
Going back through the development log I found this. This should help portray what I was saying above.
Sea Spinach and White Tree Mushroom Stir-Fry - A flavorful sea spinach and
mushroom stir-fry in Kuro sauce.
Kuro sauce has seperate requirements that then become a part of making the Mushroom Stir-Fry.

| Re: Cooking Skill(s) At release time, it's rather unlikely that any sort of player-alterable recipes, whether for cooking or any other craft, will be available. To a degree, that is something we have talked about as a possibility, but it is as yet neither designed nor planned to any significant degree.
That said, the scope and breadth of recipes across all crafts will be much more interesting and "full spectrum" than what we have in NWN right now. | | |
