Default Clarification on the Ring of True Love

It's come to the attention of the GM Team that there are some misconceptions and misunderstandings about what RP value and special properties these rings may have.

From the item's description:

Quote:
The soulstone of your one true love glows brightly whenever you wear this beautiful ring on your finger.

"On its surface is engraved in flowing script: "Love Eternal"

Light Low (10m) Green
Now, RP-wise, these rings are constructed using imprinted Soul Stones from one's partner set into a gold band. The rings can't actually be made in-game mechanically, but there are various ways to obtain them with GM assistance.

Let me state: there is no objection to characters obtaining these rings for RP purposes.

However, it's come to our attention that players are RPing these rings as imparting additional properties upon the wearers. Most specifically is the ability for one to know or "sense" when their partner, the one who's bound to the stone in the ring, is killed, hurt or in some sort of distress.

This simply is not the case. It has never been the case, and anyone who is RPing this, or any other special properties of such things should not only cease doing so but retroactively remove it from their RP (i.e. Character Development threads).

RPing this kind of "sense" as being imparted through the rings, or more accurately the Soul Stones set into the rings, is dangerously close to telepathy, which was expressly forbidden from RP (and it doesn't exist for PCs anyway) a couple of years ago. Beyond that, Soul Stones themselves simply do not have that sort of property at all.

Now, I'm pretty confident that no one was trying to skirt the rules or invent powers. I'd guess, as most things like this, that someone along the line either assumed or got some incorrect information from somewhere. These things have a way of snowballing, and I'm not going to blame anyone for this at all. But I am asking, on behalf of the GM Team, that this not continue and that it is treated as if it never happened.

These rings are intended, in both IC and OOC senses, to be symbolic gestures for in-game couples. From an IC standpoint, these rings contain an imprint of one's soul within the stone itself. Symbolically, it is like giving a piece of oneself to another as a symbol of love and devotion. This has tremendous RP value, but that is absolutely where it ends.

I do apologize if this impacts anyone's RP thus far. I normally don't like raising barriers, but this is a liberty that should never have been taken. As I said, my purpose is not to point fingers, lay blame or take any sort of action against anyone as a result. I'm simply asking that it stop.

Thanks both for the info, and for the idea! *skips off with ideas of Pyyran cutting that magically imprinted diamond into a stone for a ring for a certain singing sailor...*

So... if someone wants one of these the way to get one would be to contact a GM in game?

Just for the record, it is my understanding that the shovel announcement that the female is ready to be courted by the male she hits.... is a dwarven custom that has migrated to the masses as most good dwarven customs go. Drinking ale and the telling of tales comes to mind.

//I believe all of us males who have been hit have Scifibarbie to thank!!!

If there were an Exaggeration of the Month award, I would nominate this. It's a good one.

Yup, Left hand I believe. Hand works though. He Made Shiff and Valmara's rings RP-wise in the Beryl Temple before they were Married.

Rings of True Love are the proper name, I believe, and Soul Rings is another name for the same thing. Probably formed because someone remembered that the Rings of True Love contained imprinted soul stones and the phrase came to mind more easilly.

Both are "in-game". Neither is mechanically craftable.

I submit to our coding staff these rings should, after 10+ years of continual usage, bestow upon wearer the following effects.

* -4 to will (to live) saves
* Continuous confusion (re what we've done wrong)
* (Selective) deafness
* Have the PCs bank account have a 50 true maximum

I'm all for the realism.

PS. The thread was already way off track!

I too am interested to hear of these ring's existence in game. I'm presuming a character wishing to create one for someone should have some experience in metal smelting? Then again there’s always the chance for a third party to help out.

I'm supposing one would need gold ingots and the soul stone, anything else RP wise?

*Also skips off to lay down plans for a ring fit for a certain charming, worldly wise swashbuckler*

Generally, the way it is done is to gather a little bit of things (like gold ingots)... have the soul stone... and also pay a lump sump in the magnitude of 10,000 gold to a NPC to craft it.

Yeah, there's no need to have any particular experience with any of the associated crafts to get one, but if your character actually wanted to make it, having some experience in smelting and/or gem crafting would be quite advantageous. Otherwise, one can pay an NPC to make one. The key thing is really the imprinted soul stone.

I'm sure that has to be the cost if you just want to "buy" one straight up with no other RP involved. Otherwise, I can't understand the exorbitant price tag for the RP only item that will replace items of mechanical benefit...when raw diamonds are going for as low as 5k and you only need a couple gold ingots....soul stones a couple hundred ... bam have a more useful diamond ring with an RP soulstone set in it. Most people make their own stuff or have friends RP the making symbolic things like that. The symbolic quality in the ring is the whole soul thing, after all. Almost funny to slap a no-haggle price tag on it. :P Besides, I think most of the people that would wear that kind of thing are the sort that don't usually have the cash to spend 10k on fans, umbrellas, glowing rings, and holdable books.

I thiink the "price" is more of a "Leave us alone" tag... The Dms don't wanna be bothered

Well you didnt Charge me when you did Mine, and I've never been charged 10k for the two holdable books my PCs have, so I'd have to say I can't see the 10k price tag as much more then a deterrent

Yeah, well the hour or so I spent with Shiff and Valmara would suggest that "leave us alone" is hardly the case, especially considering how little time I actually spend in-game in any sort of capacity.

You two paid with RP, which is perfectly acceptable currency, and takes a heck of a lot longer than dropping two rings and collecting gold.

I'm sorry... I was just teasing

Heck, I love you guys. Eorendil recently did me a huge favor with making a ring for a character, along the same lines which I might post a screenie of the Description .... Osx seems to love sending little children off to their deaths to be saved by Shiff ... And we all know Tanman seems (or at least used to seem) like he was after Shiff's Soul (Shiff died a lot during Tan's Impromptus). Heck I wish I could be a DM with you guys so I could spread the magic around too
