Default speaking of time

Often I want to say things like "I saw you last night", meaning last night real time. Since NWN time is sped up, is this proper RP? The NWN manual says every 48 minutes real-time is 24 hours game time. Doing the math, this means that every 24 hours real time is actual 30 days, or 1 month game time.

Instead of saying "I saw you last night" (real time), should I say, "I saw you last month" (game time)?

Time is always a toughy for me as well.

If you think about it, if we did follow the time to a tee, our characters would probably be very old before they reached level 20.

I think it depends on the situation honestly. I still say last night, unless there was some bug event or what not, then I might say weeks or even months. It can get a little difficult at times.

Time in Layonara is every 4 RL minutes is 1 in game minute. For the 3+ RL years that Layonara has been online we have gone through 32 years... So yes some of the old characters (there are a few around still) are getting up there in age. But they are also the ones that are up there near and/or in epic levels so that makes sense.

Just out of curiousity, does this mean it's still the year 1378 according to the time line?

I'm not sure I understand. Do you mean every RL minute is 4 in-game minutes?

In NWN, 48 RL mins = 24 game hours (1440 mins), so it's 60 game minutes for every real minute, right?

One game hour for each real minute? Is my math right?

Does Layonara use a different time scale?

Every 4 Real Life Minutes = 1 In Game Hour.Â
We do use a different time than the default NWN system--(instead of 2 minutes we use 4 minutes).

Ok, so regular NWN, 30 game minutes pass for each real minute.

In Layonara, 15 game minutes pass for each real minute.

So Layonara time goes half as fast as NWN.

Hello, Im new here and havn't been on the actual server yet. But on the last RP server that I played on, I had been there for 2 solid years, I was a DM, I was an active player, and I was a builder. While I was there, the issue of time was a trivial matter at the very best. Last night would be last night. Your character doesn't just sit in the inn and drink ale until they pass out when you log out from the server do they? They wait for you to come back, and when you come back, they pick up where they left off.

Perhaps they got some sleep while you were in class, but they didnt interact with anyone while they away, so that is why I say that for all intents and purposes, they pick up where you had them leave off.

Other RPing guides here might be; hints for playing your alignment well, tips for playing a good paladin, etc.

I have to agree, in all my time on Layo (which wasn't very much, but hey) I think the issue of time was never that important. I found it easier to refer to time in RL timescale while role-playing just to avoid confusion.

Honestly, I don't think anyone will get on your back if you say "seeya tommorrow" or "Good fighting last night" even if it happens to be more game-time than that.

I mean, honestly, timescale is messed up by the concept of conversation. I have had conversations in the game that lasted 4 hours, which would mean they lasted 16 hours game-time, and that is just silly. No one talks for 16 hours, and if they do, they are going to be doing alot of sleeping afterwards.

Just so to not confuse people, 1 real hour does not equal 4 Layonara hours.
1 Real Hour is 60 Real Minutes, which is 15 Layonara Hours.
You would have been talking for 60 hours heh.

What would be the implications of changing the ratio to real time? 1 game minute = 1 real minute.

You'd have to adjust spells, etc, to accommodate, but I assume you already did this to go half time, right?

I suppose it's nice to have daytime more often, but it does kinda screw with the immersion

Whoops ... prooves that ym reading is shoddy and my math is horrendous ...

But yeah, if a 1 hour talk in RL is actually a 15 hour talk in game time, I think you can make exceptions in how you RP time ...

The problem with changing 1 min to = 1 min is that Layonara would have only been going for three years then. People can travel across a continent in five mintues, and large meetings of thirty people last for an hour (when it should last for several).
That's still a problem as it is now, if it takes you 4 RL minutes to run across Mistone that's still only 1 hour in game, however it's better than having your character age rappidly. If that was the case Tak would probably be 200+ years old, if he isn't already.
If I do something yesterday, I say yesterday so as not to confuse myself or anyone else. However most people know the time ratios so it doesn't phase them in their RP. That's cool with me. Just try not to read too much into it.

I kind of do it like this. I say Yesterday for a RL yesterday or last week what have you. But if I am grouped for a long period of time that spans multiple days then I will refer to events in, in-game time not a few minutes ago. It seems to work the only other exception is with in game months I use Our months for RL time and layo month names for in game months, and as A elf I try to stick to the elven names for months. But that rarely somes up.

No. it's now 1386.

If it's now, 1386 and it's been 32 years since the start of Layonara, does that mean you started in the year 1354, when "A call for reinforcements goes out across the land and is answered. The call is strong enough that those from other worlds also arrive."?

Are the entries in the timeline actually gameplay events?

Also, is there another history of 1354+ events somewhere?

I have a related question. Sorry if I'm sorta hijacking the thread. Say a player who runs a low lvl char has to be away for 1 week real time (or x days or whatever). If I got the math right (and I don't usually), thats like 3 1/2 months game time. He/she's too low in lvl to wander around (or he/she doesnt know the topography) and he/she can't sleep for 3 1/2 months.

Any suggestions as to how to handle this? What does he/she say if another PC says "I haven't seen you in a while ..."?

Say you have been in deep study, if your a wizard, or you were helping a merchent get to pranzis, and he hired you on full time, even though you never encountered any proablems. there are tons of things you can come up with, dont limit yourself becouse of you level and such.
