Welcome to the Layonara forums!

Layonara is so much more than a game. We started off as a tabletop Dungeons and Dragons campaign more than a decade ago. Since then we have developed into a fantasy world with as much compelling and engrossing detail as you will find anywhere.

Our current showcase is a Neverwinter Nights version of Layonara, where our world comes to life in a finely polished persistent world which you can play free of charge. These forums are set up to support and accentuate our player's experiences, but it goes far beyond that.

After years of passionate effort, our world is so well developed, so detailed, so refined that any of the handbooks, maps, historical accounts, legends, descriptions of artifacts, creature reports, character biographies, short stories, novels, movies and original art which populate these forums can surely serve as resources or inspiration for your own fantasy endeavors, whatever they may be. And our world is endlessly evolving, so resources are frequently added and updated.

There are also years of sage advice and commentary on role-playing, gaming and online community development stored in these forums. If camaraderie is what you seek, we offer that too. Our community is as active and supportive as you're likely to find on the internet. In short, these forums are a resource for you to use for whatever purpose or project brought you here.

We're confident that you will find what you are looking for, and likely, substantially more.

Please be our guest and browse around the forums which are available to you. As you do, keep in mind that you are sampling only a portion of what Layonara has to offer. Default Running

Answer me this:
Do you, the real you, run everywhere that you go? I'd be surprised if anyone can answer this truthfully with a "yes".

My point is, I find it frustrating, on what is supposedly a high-RP world, that everyone runs everywhere. I understand that places are far away, and that it's faster to run. I do it myself when I'm on my own. Fair enough. But running through the middle of town? I find that it detracts slightly from the the RP value of it all. So please, just try walking through town at least. Who knows, you might end up getting involved in more parties if you do, since people will actually have time to pull you up and talk to you.

Quin runs to avoid parties ...... he's like a grumpy old man in a cute yound knight's form ...

But seriously, I do have my characters walk when they can, but alot of times it is just VERY inconvenient, especially if you are in a RL hurry.

If this was spawned by Viv and Cray running through Hlint about a half hour ago though, they actually WERE having a Race, to Leilon. Viv won. Still trying to think of an appropriate prize.

Oh, and the real me doesn't run .... ever .... if I am being chased by a bear, guess what, I get mauled. No running.

There are some things you could say to this like "Yeah." or "Word." or "Yeah, but I don't have an 8 hour time block to play and would like to get where I'm going..." or "Yeah but there is no in between run/walk and there is just no 'skip' speed for my halfling who still stop to chat with anyone she passes..." but most people have said something about it at some time or another, I think. Like Here or Here.

You know. It's just something that people will probably always be talking about. Like racial tension in game. Or...

Actually, let me not give more examples.

Or Death Tokens! Oh how I hate them.

Actually ... I kinda like them now ...no Death Tokens would mean no Vivian ... Viv was inspired when Quin got DT #6. I wanted a new character to blow off some steam for a bit. I really like Vivian though, she feels alot like Quin did this low level ... which is what I wanted back ...

Oh! Lets talk about fast leveling!

Grrr, I hate fast levelers! I have made bows for people that are now level 18+

Let's talk about GM's entering player's houses!

hehe, this is a big one for me. *wags finger* You know what I am talking about. Pointing at you Pan,and Nuzatch before you ... thanks for the warning the second time though, it was VERY appreciated.

Lets talk about player vendors!

I never knew them, so, eh.

Let's talk about banning!

Hurray for banning! I can't think of a single banning that has happened while I was here that wasn't for the benefit of us all.

Lets talk about housing!

Want cheap housing, go to the Leilon Arms, that's why we built it darnit!

Now that I have put in a shameless business plug, I end my post.

Oh, wait, one last thing, sleeping in the streets.

Every time Viv "rests" At a temple or against the wall of a building, she is probably sitting down, relaxing, reflecting, and refreshing herself. Not every rest is sleep. We are not all narcaleptic.

And chaning in public, I spent alot of time making Viv's armor and walking/resting clothes match up, and next time I get a "Hey! No changing in the street" comment, I'mma imagine kicking them.

Elven ranger walk? Why? He grew up running. He is not sprinting, he is only stepping it out.

*runs off to the bank to pickup some coins so he can run to the merchants to pick up some supplies before he runs to the craft house to run between the benches*

Edit:
Oh...I forgot to answer your question:

Do you, the real you, run everywhere that you go? I'd be surprised if anyone can answer this truthfully with a "yes".

No, I am fat and lazy. That is why my character does. He is a lean elven ranger that has a lot of world to explore.

I cant help but notice that most of these posts start with something along the lines of "everyone runs everywhere."

Which is an overgeneralization no matter what the verb in question is.

Most people walk in hlint most of the time.
More people walk in hlint during high traffic hours (afternoon/evening US)
More people run in hlint during low traffic hours (like now, late night/early morning US)

When there are many RP opportunities people will act more in character.
When there are fewer they will concentrate more on goals like crafting or something.

I think its also because theres fewer people to see you. Like, if you're going through hlint when theres tons of people on, and you run through, theres a lot of people that might think "icky, hes running through hlint." While at night when theres fewer people, I have even been known to run through hlint (especially the east side) for no reason other than, theres not likely to be anyone to view the fact that I'm walking, no one to ignore by the fact that I'm running, and no one there that I would rather approach in a more appropriate rp fashion.

Walking when you can run is RP. It is a choice made to favor realism, despite the convenience of running. I rarely walk when I'm alone for the same reason I rarely emote my actions alone; Role playing with myself isnt the height of RP, its about the interactions between characters.

Note: Like cole, I do occasionally have one sided conversations with the hosteses when no ones around... I'm not sure why... its amusing sometimes and it feels weird just walking by them when they go "Talan Va'lash!!!"

honestly i think the biggest reason people run everywhere is because running is easier since it's the defaut, to walk you either have to set a keyboard hotkey, turn on detect mode (which there isn't one if your an elf) or hold shift, to run you just have to click somewhere, and because of that most people run because it's the default

I personally love to walk while I'm in game. I hotkeyed mine to the letter F.. and use ASD to Strafe/Walk Backward.

W is Run for when I would get into a Sticky Situation. It's an easy and economical change, unlike having mapped P to walk, what good would that do?

I've never been hardcore about running because it is default and because people want to play the game, not watch their screen waiting for the game to finally arrive. There is still a large amount of travel time/downtime even with the modest size of the areas between towns. I don't consider it to break the feel because the fact that its a game is inescapable. We play it *because* its not real. In the not real world our characters have enough stamina to run 24/7 as long as they packed their bag economically.

heh thank you for pointing that last part out, i do love how a lot of people complain about the running and completly ignore the shear amount of space that peoples backpacks hold, imagine if you will the size of this backpack that is capable of holding 30 polearms comfortably, now imagine this same backpack on a halfling too small to even weild 1 of those 30 polearms......

so who wants to start complaining that people should be using only 1/6th of their backpack, if that?

Only a few things to say on this subject and if it sounds mean, I appologise it's probably because I've heard enough people bring up this subject.
  1. "My point is, I find it frustrating, on what is supposedly a high-RP world, that everyone runs everywhere."ÂBesides running, what would indicate that this is not a high-RP world? (Serious curiosity)
  2. When people aren't around I run.
  3. When I'm in a hurry, I run.
  4. When I have an immense distance to cover (Pranzis to Firesteep)ÂI run.
  5. When I just flat out don't feel like walking, I run. (I am however courtious enough to walk when I find it appropriate. Such as through places where PCs are gathered, on Quests, and when in a serious RP situation.
  6. This is a fantasy world, and not all things need to be taken literally. If they were (as was pointed out once before) shooting off fireballs in small corridors would result in not a spherical explosion of fire, but a stream of fire shooting down the hallway in both directions frying not only the caster but more likely than not, his meat sheilds.
  7. (Beware Snottyness) Also, no one has any idea when I run and when I walk. When I've been sitting, resting, or fighting. If I've just rested and I need to make it to a quest, I'll run straight through town. No one need assume that I've been running for several areas, go ahead and just think that I'm in a hurry. Perhaps I'll walk when I'm alone but run when I'm with people... why? Well perhaps I have more of an RP reason to at the time.
End Post:
(As for the question "does the real you run everywhere you go?" No, but I darn well try thank you.)

Strength isn't tied as much to size as it should be (me thinks). Try wearing a 40 pound body armor vest, a kevlar helmet, carrying 3 frag grenades, one M-4, 16 magazines of rounds, small med kit, three radios, a map, a compass, binos, a canteen of water, two knives, a leatherman, and then being told to carry an AT 4 and a 12 Gauge shotgun, all while on no sleep and in 120 degree weather.

It drains you very fast!

Yes, I agree, the ecumber rates/consequences could use an overhaul. You can still run with all the gear that I just mentioned... especially when mortars are going off nearby and RPGs and small arms fire is going on around you... but when you get to where you were sprinting to (some form of cover/concealment) you are sucking wind and need a minute.

That used to be my preferred method of movement, but at one point I learned that it was socially unacceptable especially with company, so I stopped. Then I grew older and got lazy.

Still, when I walk alone I find I move about 20-30% faster than most people, because I get impatient at how slow they move. I'd love a fast-walk option in NWN. Or of course I could just play a monk (which I am now.)

I usually do alot of running around, covering large distances and meeting people.
I run also when I am in a party, like in Seilwood forest. But in Hlint, I used to walk, but now run - but trying to get back into walking.
Just I like running because it's quicker, and everyone wants speed these days. Like on NWN online, you never saw anyone walking - Unless they were encumbered.

And in RL, I do run to college if I am late. Well half way...

What the...
I don't have much time to play this game, between real life concerns. I'll run, rather than get hung up over walking and accomplishing half as much as I would otherwise.
But yeah, it's all been said.
