Internet Relay Chat (IRC)

For those of you who know what IRC is and would like to join in the fun, Layonara now has it's very own dedicated IRC server. For those of you that have no idea what IRC is you are most certainly welcome to join in as well. This server is by no means interconneted with any other IRC server ornetwork. This is our own little private island folks. You can connect to the server with X-Chat, mIRC, Gaim or any other IRC capable client out there (and trust me when I say there's a zillion and one of these things but the ones mentioned here are the most notable). As well there is a free web based client for everyone to use though it is very limited and has problems with Internet Explorer however it works just fine with any Mozilla based browser like FireFox or Netscape. Work on the Internet Explorer side of this web based client is still underway and any progress will be made public on this thread. It does work, just not very reliably. You can find the web based IRC client here or you can get all these same details by going to IRC.Layonara.com. The connection details for the stand-alone clients are as follows:

Server: irc.layonara.com

Port: 6667

Channel: #nwn

Please be aware that the same rules of in-game chatting apply to the IRC server as well, in particular the following are not tolerated and may get you permenantly banned from the IRC server:

  • 1337 sp34k
  • Swearing or cursing
  • Griefing
  • Stealing someone's nickname
  • Any form of harassment
You are however allowed to camp all you like in #nwn. Other channels may be started upon request with sufficient approval. If you have any questions, comments or concerns with this service please do not hesitate to contact me via a forum PM, my email (onest8@layonara.com) or on IRC with "/msg OneST8 Hi, I've got something to say!". Enjoy!

Update - Thu Oct 27, 2005

  • KageKeeper pointed out on IRC that there is a site with a slew of X-Chat stuff for Windows and all of it is absolutely free and prepackaged for your installation pleasure. The link is here: http://silenceisdefeat.org/~b0at/xchat/win32/

Here's a screenshot of X-Chat logged in to the #nwn channel.

There will be some tutorials, FAQ and such made available within the next day or two.

It is with great pleasure that I announce our basic tutorial for IRC which can be found here:

http://irc.layonara.com/irc_tutorial

Thanks go out to Luna for providing this useful bit of goodness that even has screenshots to help get you connected and de-mystify IRC!

VGN has pulled a nice little rabbit out of his hat while trying in vain to compile X-Chat without the $20.00 registration fee (which I had failed at as well, ok well I only spent one night on it so far but still it's a real bugger to get going).

Anyways, you can now go to http://irc.layonara.com and download your very own, fully legal, no-registration-required version of X-Chat from our server (it's the big link near the bottom of the page). However, if you do end up using X-Chat for windows and feel like giving back to the free software community, please donate to the X-Chat project here.

Enjoy!

both zerpa and I tried to go on IRC and the 2nd person gets "No more connections allowed in your connection class". I assume this is because we appear to the outside world as having the same IP address and domain, as we're connecting from the same home network. Is there a way around this, perhaps:

1) allow more connections from the same domain

or

2) allow another port besides 6667? (one of us can be 6667 and other 6668, for example)

Also, a channel name other than #nwn would be nice, since I often have other neverwinter channels open (from Neverwinter Connections, etc), and #nwn is pretty hard to spot easily as Layonara.

Howabout #layonara?

This is currently set to two connections maximum though I can increase the max.

IRC does not work the same way as NwN with it's client ports. You're already connecting with different client ports automatically but initial server port is always 6667 for everyone. It still amazes me to this day that NwN is so haphazard with it's networking.

I'm not so sure about this one, not because it isn't possible but because there are other reasons why #nwn was chosen which I'm not at liberty to discuss. However, if there is a popular vote for this I'm certain the decision can be swayed.

For some time there has been a simple IRC Bot named "aragen" idling in our beloved IRC server and many have been asking how to utilize the various abilities of the bot. In this post, I'll be elaborating all of it's available capabilities.

  • dice

    • Description: You can get aragen to roll some dice on your behalf. The dice can have arbitrary sides, arbitrary number of dice to be rolled, have modifiers applied and even calculate the success/failure of a DC.
    • Usage: aragen: 1d20 +1 dc 15
    • Results: OneST8: You rolled a 18 (17 + 1) *SUCCESS*

  • math

    • Description: aragen can solve math problems (sorry no algebra and other such advanced things).
    • Usage: aragen: ( 10 + 20 / 2 ) * 15 - 28
    • Results: OneST8: ( 10 + 20 / 2 ) * 15 - 28 = 272

  • karma

    • Description: This is a silly absolutely-means-nothing-in-the-grand-scheme-of-life type feature. How this works is that you can increment and decriment someone's karmic value. Everybody starts out with neutral karma and can go negative or positive from there. You cannot adjust your own karmic rating, only others can adjust your karmic rating.
    • Usage: aragen: orth++
    • Results: OneST8: orth's karma value is currently 4.

  • layodate

    • Description: This feature allows you to find out what the current date and time is within the game world itself.
    • Usage: aragen: layodate
    • Results: OneST8: The current Layonara date is: Sunra, Oclar 22, 1386, 0:42:15

  • lastseen

    • Description: This allows you to find out the last time someone was seen in game.
    • Usage: aragen: lastseen "Rhizome"
    • Results: OneST8: Rhizome was last seen in-game 2005-07-17 03:58:19.
The final thing that aragen can do is remember little factoids. These can often be useful for answering frequently asked questions amungst other things. To teach aragen a new factoid, simply tell him what something is but be careful as the operative word is "is". Here's an example. (anything in []'s indicates who the speaker is.)

[OneST8] aragen: Layonara is the Best. Game. World. Ever.

[aragen] OneST8: I'll remember that.

[OneST8] aragen: what is Layonara?

[aragen] OneST8: You informed me that Layonara is the Best. Game. World. Ever.

If you wanted to add something to that factoid but not overwrite it, you would use the "is also" clause like so:

[OneST8] aragen: Layonara is also the world created by Leanthar Spellore.

[aragen] OneST8: I'll remember that too.

[OneST8] aragen: what is Layonara?

[aragen] OneST8: You informed me that Layonara is the Best. Game. World. Ever. You said it's also the world created by Leanthar Spellore.

Now if you for some reason wanted to have aragen forget any factoid (and all of it's "is also" clauses), simply tell him to do so like this:

[OneST8] aragen: forget Layonara

[aragen] OneST8: I've forgotten something.

Anyways, that's all for this update. Hope to see you all there!

Just a quick note that the IRC server along with the main layonara.com domain are down at the moment. Calls have been made to the hosting provider. I will report back here with any updates.

It looks like the DNS servers for the 'layonara.com' domain is not responding.  And because of that, I can't find an IP address for you all to use either.

Hopefully, OneST8 knows about this (or will shortly) and will be able to take care of it.

There was a large scale network failure with Peer1 (the trunk service provider for the server). All should be well now. Sorry for not posting about this last night when I noticed it happening.

@Lils, it is up right now.  One thing people should be aware of is that you may need to disable your virus scanner for a bit. When I get on to IRC I have to disable McAfee during that time--just don't forget to turn it back on!  I am not sure what McAfee doesn't like about IRC but with it running I can not connect.

McAffee blocks "suspicious" port usage if I'm not mistaken. Your install must be configured to not do any firewalling for the IRC port if you're not having any problems connecting.

I was wondering, is irc to be used to form parties nowadays?

When it went up i was under the impression that it would be a chat-site to use for ooc stuff and to discuss in char things like: "how to act on surprises"

"call for help in emergencies if no gm is on in Layo itself "...that kind off things .
