Dim light and stealth
« on: May 05, 2007, 02:07:55 pm »
I put a fire resistance enchantment on a ring of mine to compensate for my wooden shield...  My character seems to be getting spotted more often now, and I was wondering what the penalty is for having a dim light with stealth.

Not sure if there's a penalty, but if you use the gnomish contraption in the Scamp you can take the light off.

Yes, there is; the Stealth/Perception system in NWN is actually really complex... There's a big thread on the subject in the Bioware Boards.

The more light, the more likely you are to be spotted. The closer you are, the terrain, ambient everything... Yeah.

Oh, so day/night cycles actually DO have an impact!  Can you link that thread, Stephen?  I've been wondering about the mechanical impact.

Quoted from Bioware:

"Only if you are carrying around a torch at the time (or a magic item that has the light effect on it).

There are a large number of factors that affect a persons ability to Spot a creature.

At night:
- If the person hiding has a light source the spot check is adjusted by 10 in the spotters favor.
- If the spotter doesn't have a light source, the spotter gets a 5 penalty to spot the hiding character.

The spotter's spot skill.

The hiding creature's hiding skill.

Bigger creatures have a harder time hiding than smaller creatures (depending on relative size).

The direction the spotter is facing with regards to the direction the hiding creature is in.

Whether or not the spotting character is actively searching, or is in combat.

Whether or not you are blind.

Whether or not the hiding creature is invisible.

How far away the hidden character is.

Whether or not the hiding creature is standing still or not.

Whether or not the spotting creature is standing still or not.

Whether or not the spotting creature has a "Favored Enemy" bonus.

etc.

Its not a "simple" spot vs hide check, there is a large number of factors taken into acount when a spot check is made.

Craig."

Well here is an other one in that line of thoughts. Rain and Njord have been going around sneaking, and all none of them have HIPS, but I have went on on a few people that were using true sight and at least two of them told me they still could'nt see me.

I just want to make sure of that one before I get myself trampled by a horde of hungy Giant witch doctor that sudenly decided to all go on true sight mode on me *grins*

True Sight can spot Hide no matter what your skill check.
This was proven when Lin'da found Kinai during a hunt for her from a quest, and I don't think a mage would have a spot check over 30.

Could have been a confusion between See Invisibility and Trueseeing... The former can't spot a hide check, but the latter can.

Ok, I read that thread on the NWN forum, and this quote here raises another issue.  Do creature spawns make listen checks?  Also, I am reading that NPC creatures are suppose to make listen checks against invisible PCs, which definitely is not happening.  Maybe this would be a better adjustment then giving giant mages see invisible?

It is true that while you may fail your spot check, you may still make your listen check (which will also result in a physical representation of the creature appearing in NWN).

"Not sure how the scripted AI handles listen checks my self (most of the AI that was scripted was done by the design team).
So it may be quite possible that the NPC listen checks are not being made for NPCs. "

If you fail your Move Silently check, but not your Hide check, the AI will not directly attack you, but it will get ready for a fight - in some cases, this includes casting True Seeing, which means you're in for trouble.

If you fail your Hide check, but not your Move Silently check, the AI attacks.

In the cases of a REALLY REALLY REALLY high Hide check, even True Seeing can be baffled... Though we're talking upwards of 90. (Disclaimer: I have not witnessed this for myself, only heard quite a few rumours of this.)

Same did erik With Njord, this time he told me he had casted that Njord has no sc abilities. Njord has over 39 in hide

On Elohanna one i had hid in a diferent room door closed, as in erik in a diferent area.

If you're hiding in a different room, of course she won't see you. She doesn't have line of sight; how could you see someone when there's a wall between the two of you?

Likewise with different in-game areas. :P

He probably meant the act of hiding was done in a different room.  *Smiles* Unless you have HIPS you need to hide out of line of sight or the PC can see you.

On the True sight note, I don't believe that you can *ever* hide from True sight.
