Times and Quests
« on: December 17, 2007, 12:42:19 pm »
I am getting totally confused with some quests and times and need a bit of help.  Some of the times especially AEST tend to be on different days then listed cooresponding to EST which is the time I am in.  So I will sign up, think its monday but the event either happened on Sunday or even is not until Tuesday.. Please help with this.  Also some say you need to hear about them during story telling night or talk to others who are in that quest.  First when is Story Telling night and second how is it proper to contact some of the people already involved in the quest so you can join also.  Sorry if some of this is second nature to some of you but being new I really am getting confused and do not wish to be banned from quests cause I didnt show up cause I am reading them all wrong

Storyteller's Night is held once a month (usually) at the Weary Traveller.  It's not a guarantee of hearing about a quest, but most prominent quests are mentioned, if there's no reason they wouldn't be.

As for contacting individuals... if there's no reason your character wouldn't know the individuals on the quest... you more or less have to run into them in-game, or arrange to do so.  (Otherwise, there's no reason why they would contact Trith - nor any reason he'd have to contact them.)  A PM to the player in question, asking if you can "meet" them at some point to learn about the quest, is the usual course of things.

As for AEST and similar problems... Time and Date.Com is your friend.  Plug in the time, and look up your city. :)

The problem with date is that it actually is the next day in Australia compared to the East coast of the US so you have to take that into account when you look at it.  If the GM lists the event simply by date then it will be his/her local date.  I think if they put the event up with the date and time then the timezones will adjust the postion on the calendar but most of those AEST quests get posted by just date with the time information in the text.  I would suggest if possible all events be posted with date and times in the form where you enter the event.  That should help people see the correct times on the forums.  The only problem with that is whether or not the "this event ignores DST" should be checked or not because that can make a difference at different times of the year.

In this case, a quest references a specific Storyteller's Night in which the story of that quest was told. It is not saying "you must find a storyteller's night to attend" but rather, you need to know what's happened already, and the story night has been the best way of doing that so far. The events themselves (Storyteller's Night, not quests) happen more regularly at the Weary Traveler, but sporadically just about anywhere else, as it's been a traveling event for a couple years, hehe.

As far as contacting people and finding out what's going goes, first you can find out who's involved a couple of ways.  One by looking who signed up for previous sessions and sending a PM or looking for them in game.  Another is to just ask around in game about the events and see who you get pointed to.  To find out which of their characters is involved a PM or in game "tell" to ask is best inculding asking generally what the quest is about.  Then when you know the character you need to talk to you can just RP hearing a rumor that they were involved in some events relating to xxx and you would like to know more to see if you can help.  You can make this communication by PM, or "tell", or a bird message.  Then the IG meeting and talking can happen.  I know this is probably obvious stuff but that's the basic way I go about finding information.  It's a bit like being an intelligence analyst.  First you find out what you need to know then who knows what you want to know and then how to get them to tell you.  :)  Hope this helps.

1)Make sure you have selected your timezone in your Forum Options,
2)then the calendar will show times as they are in your timezone.
That should avoid showing up on the wrong day.

Also some say you need to hear about them during story telling night or talk to others who are in that quest.

1) That is/was for a specific series, normally you just look at the calendar, see where it starts and show up at the starting location.
2) If it is somebody's CDQ (Character Development Quest), those are by Invitation Only, so if you haven't been invited by the player whose CDQ it is, you can't attend. Same applies to WLDQs (World Leader Development Quests)

Other tips:
1) In quests that are part of a series, there is sometimes a "closed party". For example, if the previous episode ended halfway through a dungeon, it wouldn't make sense for new people to suddenly show up, so then you can't join.
Chances are you'd be able to attend later when the "closed party" is gone.
2) Sometimes there's a limited number of "slots", the more people that come, the more difficult it is for a GM to keep up with everyone. So some will put up a limit for the number of participants.
3) Sometimes there's also a level range, i.e. only levels 10-15. Usually you won't be allowed if your character is not in this range, although in this example, if you're lvl 9 or 16 you could probably get in.

That's about it!

That only works if the DM uses whatever Forum thingy there is to make sure it translates.....Not all DM's do

DMOE is correct. I also use an external webbsite which is timeanddate.com which translates the times to different cities around the world.  Makes it easy

And with all that done I still miss quests. Like Ed's quest yesterday.

Not all DMs use timeaanddate.com nor do all use the forum time tool.
