Lore Question
« on: January 15, 2008, 08:34:47 pm »
//

Is there a part of the world in which women might be required to wear veils in the style of an islamic chador or niqab?

I have a character, Lyn who is seeking anonymity, ie. a reasonable excuse for full face concealment.

Audira presents itself as a region with a Middle Eastern feel, would it be reasonable to say there might be a Layonaran equivalent of this RL practice that exists there?

Please note, I am in no way seeking to start a discussion on the appropriateness or validity of any religious custom (or sartorial one for that matter), be it real life or in a fantasy setting.

I don't think so, but since there are all those writeups unreleased as of yet, it could be that whoever wrote the area writeups decided to model it after something like that. Either way, she could always claim comfort in them, stating that they were used as a safety measure against the sun. Just because she "left the desert" doesn't mean that she would necessarily abandon all the means of attire, including means of shading oneself from the sun.

Or just claim origins from a small tribe or family that has those practices, without pretending it belongs to an entire region.

Unless of course the answer is yes, which would make it simple enough.

Full facial coverings are used in Sedera, but by both men and women and not for religious reasons - it's because of the sandstorms.  Like other desert dwellers, it simply makes sense to protect one's face from both the powerful reflected sun and the flying particulate matter.  The same would go for the Blood Desert and any other such area.  However, most Sederans would keep their face coverings handy out of habit...

Vierdri'ira Questions

Question One.
I play a level 7 priestess of Vierdri'ira but (OOC) I have no idea where the temple to this Goddess happens to be. I dare say (IC) that she might have some idea or at least the ability to ask a superior to find out. If this information is deemed privileged, is it possible to request a PM as to the whereabouts of the PC accessible temple?

Question Two.
I have seen advertised for sale an Orcish Bane of the Elf (spear). This is not mentioned in Lore as a preferred weapon of a priestess of Vierdri'ira however it does seem entirely appropriate. Again, might I request a PM or response in this thread if purchase and utilization of such a weapon might meet with the Dark Mother's approval?

Regards,

Angelic

One might conclude that temples to th Veirdri'ira would exist only in the Deep and would be exceedingly rare on the surface.  She would in fact have a temple in every Deep city but since so few of these are actually represented in game it seems less.

Please keep in mind that temples to common gods and goddesses exist in towns and cities even thought they may not have a physical representation in the module.

Would a priestess of Vierdri'ira dirty her hands with the weapon of an orc even if it did have a greater sting to elves?   Her prefered weapon is the whip.

Quite so, however I reference the relevant part of my query,

.. the whereabouts of the PC accessible temple? ..

I can imagine temples at the edges of my peripheral vision all day however this particular query concerns the location of one to which I might gain entry  for the purpose of making donations.

You've chosen to play a cleric of a deity not accepted on the surface and worshipped in the Deep. I don't think it's a huge stretch to know there would not be a temple on the surface.  Not going to give the PC location on the forums, so it would likely be a very dangerous trip to donate.  This does not mean that when you reach level 10 and can request a CDQ to  begin to rectify that.  Playing an unpopular character is a lonely road but a challenging one.

As for the weapon I suppose you could try it and see how your goddess reacts to the weapon of the orc in her minion's hands....  [ given the superiority complex of elves and this sect in particular, how do YOU think your character would view the weapon knowing her goddess's tendancies?]

My thoughts would be no.. the orcish weapon would be a taint in the hand of
of an elf as much as one made any race other than a dark elf... but sometimes one has to make due...  How Vierdri'ira sees it... well she is a bit unpredicatable..

I have nothing to add to Minerva's post.
