Title: Disappearing Magic
Post by: Alazira on April 10, 2011, 03:40:27 pm
Description: Every so often, I'll be playing Jillian (and it's only her, not my other characters) and all my buffs disappear.  If anyone tries to rebuff me, those buffs disappear.  It's sporadic, with no known trigger.  It is annoying and probably deadly to have your buffs just randomly disappear.  It has been happening for months, if not her whole life.  Only solution I have found is to log all the way out of NWN and back in, but then I still have to hope someone around me has more buffs for me.

Location: Anywhere I happen to be.  Below ground, above ground, fighting areas, cities, etc.

Verified: Most recent witnesses were cbnicholson and Serissa

Reproducable: It happens spordically, so not reproducable on request.

Hello Alazira

Could you please format your request with this format (http://forums.layonara.com/bug-reports/114895-bug-report-format.html)

It will also help us greatly if you let us know where are the areas that usually happen ,

Thank you,

Specifically this time was the diamond area in the deep after the no magic area.

Have you verified that your buffs are going away by looking at your character window and making sure all the increases and things are gone?  Sometimes the icons at the top of the game window disappear but don't necessarily reflect the correct state of your character's magical enhancements.

I seem to recall Daniella having a similar problem relating to the use of Divine Might and/or Shield.  I am going to investigate...

Yes, they truely go away.  Not just the icons.

[LORE]Jillian Stuart[/LORE] is a Paladin/Undead Slayer. Grid Blader had/has a similar [THREAD=134532]problem[/THREAD] with his Undead Slayer.

Did a solution to Q's problem ever result from that post string that wasn't posted?

I thought of something.  I don't know if it is related to this issue or not... but I'll give it a shot.

You know how when you log in, it usually says your name and your class...  Mine for her says Jillian Stuart Paladin/Bad Strref.  It doesn't actually say Undead Slayer.  Could that have something to do with it?

I doubt it. Most if not all Layo special classes come up with some random text in that window. The text for my Bard/Skald/Spellsword can be pretty entertaining at times.

Like jadewillow said, this has to do with how NWN loads custom content, or rather...when.

Our HAKs are not loaded by the NWN client until after you select a character and log in. As such, our labels for some classes (and a few other things) are not loaded on the character choice screen, resulting in your "Bad Strref" labels and other sorts of labels that don't make sense.

Oookay,

You asked for a specific time and location.  This time it was 3:31am EST (like 5 minutes ago) in Whitehorn Forest - Western Borders.  Noone else was around to witness.  Just me and the wildlife.

Thanks,

Katie

NWN's mobile area of effect bug?

Though that usually only ends the defensive AoEs prematurely, not every spell active.  Hmm... maybe not - throwing it in the pool though.

Rusty River, yesterday at 7:47pm

Vehl Crypts, today at 445pm (I had William Leox with me in Crypts, but it wasn't a lot of magic so I'm not sure he noticed it.)

If you want me to stop with specific times and places, say so.  Just figure whatever info I give you may help.

*shakes head* this must be so annoying for you.  It sounds like a coding/scripting issue where, upon some trigger, the game suddenly thinks you have no spell casting ability at all.  Maybe a comprarison of the codes/scripting for a Spellsword to that of an Undead Slayer would reveal something.  The spell adjustments made by these two classes work similar, but for some reason the US class seems to be messing things up.

Actually...My spellsword is having a similar issue of late. Though instead of losing all her buffs, all of her ability to cast 1st and 5th level spells goes poof!

Though it only appears to be happening on the central server and not west.

Upon being buffed by a cleric or paladin of various faiths, all of her 1st and 5th level spells are used up even though she hasnt cast any of them.

Dont know if this is in any way similar to what is happening to her. But it is a fairly regular occurance of late with abi.

It's not just spells I cast upon myself.  It is any magic on me at all.  Any spells by me or another person, barkskin helm, even an ion stone.

Just for clarification here also, this happened without the magic circle against alignment as well, so it's not that bug.

This is a long shot, but maybe you're dispelling rune is activating accidentally some how.  Why don't you try keeping it off Jil's person for a while (keep it in storage or trash it).  If you stop losing your wards you'll know that was the problem.  At least its something to try.

Maybe you could be given permission to create a new character and with DM help level up to Jillian's level, taking the same feats and abilities. Then you could run around with that character and see if it happens. If not, you know it is something specific with Jillian or an item Jillian carries.

What might be helpful is an accounting of what spells and effects were active on  your character at the time. I'm beginning to wonder if there is one in particular which is too aggressive in canceling effects.

For some technical insight, NWN doesn't cancel "spells" but rather types of effects.  Invisibility, for example, is an effect, not a spell. I could make a new spell (or edit an existing one) that made the target invisible. Anything that overcomes or dispels invisibility would still work on this spell, even though it's not typically an Invisibility spell. In that context, when a spell, effect or power expires, it removes the effects, though sometimes the effects are not as specific as one might like.

Anyway, what would help is to know what spells, powers, triggered feats and the like were active upon your character.  My suspicion is that there's nothing wrong with your character as such that would be causing this but rather the possibility of a class property or power that is at fault.

The order in which the spells/powers/properties/buffs are applied would also be helpful. If you keep logs, this will all be shown in the log. If not, it's a good suggestion anyway, but failing that, just write them down.

I have had many many logs and no log ever shows anything odd.  It still happens regularly.  Should I keep posting it?
Title: Re: Disappearing Magic
Post by: Dorganath on December 07, 2011, 12:20:45 am
I'm not really interested in things that are odd.  I'm more interested in finding commonalities with these occurrences and what spells or spell-like effects you may have active when it occurs.

My suspicion is that some spell, when it is expiring, is taking away some other effects (rare but possible) due to the way in which it cancels them.

So start with the case of your character only buffing herself (meaning no buffs from anyone else), and see if it happens. That's the most controllable case there is, because you can know exactly what effects are at work and how long their durations should be. Make note of the spells and make note of when they seem to disappear.

Interesting thing I just noticed...

I was out adventuring, but had been done for a while and all my spells died a natural death at the same time as the other person with me.  So, nothing funny there.  But then I was running down a road and realized I wasn't getting the haste the road normally gives, while the other player was.  So, for giggles I tried casting a bulls on myself and it immediately disappeared.  So, apparently my bug happened when no magics were on me and it even affects the haste the road gives you.

I'll keep looking to see if I can notice a pattern though.

OK.. after looking for patterns for a while, all I can say is there is none.  Sometimes it happens 2 seconds after a rest, sometimes not for hours, sometimes it happens when I have spells on me, sometimes it happens when I'm just sitting around a campfire without any spells on me, there doesn't appear to be anything that is happening to trigger it.

Another oddity I noticed however is that when I'm under the effects of whatever this is, the afk marker of mine doesn't work.  I'm talking about the swirly gig around you.  I give the command, it says I'm in afk mode, but the swirly gig isn't there.  So, it isn't just spells.

Thanks!

Katie

OK, I'm confused now.  How can spell effects disappear two seconds after a rest or when you're "sitting around a campfire without any spells on you"?  I don't understand what you're saying here or how it's applicable to your original complaint.  What is the "it" that's happening? Is it something different than what you've been saying?
Title: Re: Disappearing Magic
Post by: Alazira on January 07, 2012, 07:29:00 pm
It has happened when I was sitting around a campfire.  I know this because when I came to the campfire I was fine (the haste was working on the roads, etc.) and then when I went to leave the campfire and tried to cast spells on myself they wouldn't stick (which is what happens after all the spells drop until I log all the way back out and back in).

As for happening after a rest, I would rest (with magic still active on me before resting) and then when trying to cast magic on myself just after resting, the magic wouldn't stick (thus telling me it had happened again).

It's the same thing I told you before (that the spells will disappear sporadically and then if anyone tries to recast on me the spells cast disappear immediately until I log all the way out and back in).  I just added the afk marker as I had recently noticed that.

This is verified by me, this has now happened to Talia twice in the last 5 minutes of play. There were no buff stripping monsters, no monsters at all around us, she has had problems casting true sight on herself, and others. Now her buffs are disappearing. She re-casts them all and they all disappear, again. The buffs she cast on me, and the buffs I cast on myself are all holding strong. This is quite a vulnerable situation.

I put some fixes in to hopefully correct this issue. I haven't had a chance to test myself but if you notice it still happens after this point please remark.

If it does happen the best way for you to help is report:

The spells you had cast on you beforehand (or entire party)
The spells anyone in your party had cast upon themselves (or entire party)

No other information is needed, just that info.
