Title: Do you have a question for Leanthar?
Post by: Aurhinius on January 13, 2004, 01:27:00 pm
If so then post it here and I will do my best to answer it. Just do not ask about the plot or quest information.

Just how long to Elves live on Layonara?
Title: RE: Do you have a question for Leanthar?
Post by: Leanthar on February 06, 2004, 02:08:00 pm
The standard D&D years is what I go by.  The average is about 350 years is my guess.  The OLD/ANCIENT ones can live up to about 700+ years (but not very often).
I do not have the rules book in front of me or I would open it up and get precise.

When a PC dies (or NPC for that matter) Where does there soul go? Does the soul have a say in if it becomes raised/ress'ed?
Title: RE: Do you have a question for Leanthar?
Post by: Leanthar on February 06, 2004, 02:39:00 pm
On Layonara (currently) a soul goes to the Plane of the Lost (much much larger area than you can imagine).
No, a soul does not have a choice to come back or not.  Cleric spells etc. pull the soul back to the body regardless of if the character wanted to be raised or not.  The only way a soul can be stopped is if a Deity (or one close to deity status), The Harvester of Souls, The Soul Mother, or The Gatherer of Souls step in and stop the soul.

Is there anyway to become a guard of a city?
Title: RE: Do you have a question for Leanthar?
Post by: Leanthar on February 06, 2004, 03:44:00 pm
I would love to do that... Thoughts on how I can go about doing it via scripting/factions?  I have not had time to sit and think it through.  But I know for a fact it needs to be an in-game script/faction thing otherwise it can (and will) be abused by players when GM's are not around... Unless I am missing what you are asking for...?

Only way I could think of doing it were if there were differnt organizations set up in different cities.  You could only join one, since you could only guard one town at a time without conflicts happening.

When you joined you got a token, or a helm or suit of armor or whatever.  Could do quests to go up in ranks.

DM's could use that stuff too.  If you're out adventuring you could get a note that you're expected on guard duty.  Or whatever.

Kinda like the Defenders a while back.  But less universal and with less powerful rewards.  Heh.  And with harder quests I imagine.

Possibly with that token towns people would have quests for you that they wouldn't have had without it.  Because they know you are a town protector.

Stuff like that.

Faction wise.. not sure it would be necessary to alter anything. I mean, players won't be attacking the towns.  Just monsters, they are all hostile already.

I was up exploring Leilon the other day.  There is a script in place to join the Leilon militia I think.  I'm not sure if and how it works though.

Excactly like Ta'k explained it. Maybee someone could do this as community service *hint* *hint*. Impossible quests, tiny rewards, that's the job for a lone dwarf that have got a brush in with the law.

Will the temples eventually have some kind of cleric/paladin quests? Like ridden that dungeon of evil etc etc etc

Now that I think of it, it would probably work better if it was some GM quest. But what some script checked if there was, for example, other Aeridin worshippers on the server. A messenger would be dispatched to say that the temple is in need of aid. Then the PCs show up at the temple and have to form a party (2 or more) before being able to get the quest from a NPC. Just a random though.

Trillex,
Yes, at some point that is what I hope... But alas, there is SOOO much work to do. :)
  Milo,
I think about 80% came from thin air when I was in creation mode.  But a fair amount came from books, history, stories etc.

Trillex, send me a PM. We will work some holy task out.

Leanthar!! Hey!

Does Magic work the same as it does in FR? So as to say, it flows outward from Lucindia (or X god of Magic), and is a part of all things. I think it was called The Weave in FR, but I am not 100% sure. Thanks!

Yes, Lucinda grants access to the weave for wizards and sorceerer types.. but not cleric types.

If I remember correctly it wasn't a continent but instead 2 islands. I forget which post it was in but I believe it was the "question" thread. I'll check and provide a link shortly.

Edit:The kingdom of Roldem is the island he listed though he made referance to a second. The topic can be found here. http://layonaraonline.com/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=2167&start=1

Muhahaha....more questions.....From Me! :)
  1. Will there be more NPC quests in V2 with all of the new continents coming into play? (I just like them because it gives my mean character, Julius a chance to RP :))
  2. Once V2 is released and the big bugs (if any) are worked out will the main quests on the blood war start?
  3. Will the new weapons Maul n' such be craftable/enchantable?
  4. And last I'm sure Forsetti has been working his butt off to up crafting in V2 soooo.....will there be more CNR items to collect for crafts.....will there be new crafting catagories.....and will there be some CNR items that only grow on certain islands or continents (heavily guarded at that :)).
Title: RE: Do you have a question for Leanthar?
Post by: Leanthar on May 14, 2004, 07:49:00 am
1)  Yes, but not at the beginning... We are trying to get other things down and now some bugs fixed.  Forsettii has a cool system that allows us to whip them out now.. Just we need to get to the other stuff first.  But it is important to us so it will happen.
  2) Yes, but it will build slowly over time... ie, as I get more time and a few things in the plot rolls out.
  3) Yes but we are looking at the enchanting of them at this time
  4) Yes, some more. Yes, there are at least one (and he is working on a second as he gets time).  Certain things will only grow certain places and yes they are heavily guarded.  Some are only on one island/continent.

What are the official languages spoken in Layonara, I know that in general its all the humanoid races and their derivatives. But do thieves speak undercommon or their Thieve's Cant?

Title: RE: Do you have a question for Leanthar?
Post by: Leanthar on May 14, 2004, 10:25:00 am
The official language is called Common.  Yes, theives use Thieve's Cant... but the problem is how do we do that in code?  I can't... but it certainly can be RP'd.

Will the Necromancer summons be tweaked at all in V2?
Title: RE: Do you have a question for Leanthar?

Why would they be? They're pretty balanced right now. They require a componet, and are not that great anyway.

Title: RE: Do you have a question for Leanthar?
Post by: Eight-Bit on June 24, 2004, 08:33:00 pm
Yes, but those are not the new summons. Those are specific summons, like Planar Binding and Planar Ally. I do not think they are changed. I do not believe they are even used in v1.
Title: RE: Do you have a question for Leanthar?
Post by: Foxy on July 03, 2004, 02:39:00 am
In V1 the spell components are so costly they necromancers don't have the money to waste on them because the creatures summoned by the "Summon Dead etc..." are VERY weak compared to the spell level and level of the character. You'd get better summons with Planar Summons and even Shadow Summonings than Undead. They just die in one hit by a bugbear at lvl 14. I meen a regular bugbear not a bugbear champion or anything. So that tells you how weak they are. Plus the components are just TOO expensive to go around buying at that level. People are poor and the items sold to help out are expensive enough to detour away from spell components all together and just find spells that don't have spell components to save money. V2, hehe, V2 I hope won't srootanize against buying price of spell components and won't mess up spells that are ment to be strong at the levels they are selected on. For one, from what i see, we'll need the spell strength BACK in V2. Hopefully the summons will be brought back up to par from where they are now... summoning a badger to fight off an owlbear or dire spider... that doesn't work very well at all... and if you summon your familiar well... there's 100 gold down the drain... but at least you got away, nope, lag from stupid ISP AHHHHHHH!!! *stabs ISP with sharp pointy stick* Anyways. I hope the undead summoning is boosted back up to par come V2, I haven't tested anything yet cause of OBVIOUS internet issues.

You need to come over and test if you have concerns.  But the summoning system has been made over and is now very customized to us.  I think you will be happy with what you see.

Back again with more questions.
  1. Are all of the gods against Blood or are some of the evil ones rooting him on (and even helping him as an ally)?
  2. Will the continents/islands be changing (creature spawns, metal deposits n' such) as Blood defeats them and strips them of their natural resources?
  3. I understand that Dregar has now been attacked. This isn't something that you've planned out and that the PCs won't be able to defend against is it? Or will we be able to repel to forces and save Dregar for the time being?
  4. Hope no one get's mad at me for asking, but I had to. I noticed that there seem to no longer be limmits on special subraces and PrCs. Will these ever be put in place again or is it just, "Make a good enough Bio, and put time into your character, and the Race/PrC is yours?
  5. Last time I asked questions one of them was about the continents that are still free. Well Rilara is not one of them so......Do Blood's forces occupy it now? And if I go there will I have a run in with them? (Example: Blood scouts, undead thingies, and little demon dudes who fight for blood?)
That's all for now. If you need to give me a, "can't answer that." Go ahead. :)

1. Are all of the gods against Blood or are some of the evil ones rooting him on (and even helping him as an ally)?
Hmmm... I can not think of very many that are rooting for him at all.
  2. Will the continents/islands be changing (creature spawns, metal deposits n' such) as Blood defeats them and strips them of their natural resources?
Yes, as much as we can that is.  It is a LOT of work to do this though so we need to keep it within reason.
  3. I understand that Dregar has now been attacked. This isn't something that you've planned out and that the PCs won't be able to defend against is it? Or will we be able to repel to forces and save Dregar for the time being?
PC's will be involved when we can get to it but again it is all a matter of time.  But yes, we will be allowing armies and such to repel the forces, or lose/die trying.
  4. Hope no one get's mad at me for asking, but I had to. I noticed that there seem to no longer be limmits on special subraces and PrCs. Will these ever be put in place again or is it just, "Make a good enough Bio, and put time into your character, and the Race/PrC is yours?
Right now it is the do a good bio thing.  And one of the things you guys need to understand is that although it seems like many are doing subraces, very few are getting very far in them because they are starting to realize that the ECL's makes them a lot more difficult that realized.  But if it looks like too many are starting to reach mid/high level I will probably fall back to restricting them in some way.
  5. Last time I asked questions one of them was about the continents that are still free. Well Rilara is not one of them so......Do Blood's forces occupy it now? And if I go there will I have a run in with them? (Example: Blood scouts, undead thingies, and little demon dudes who fight for blood?)
The continent is controlled by Milara, who is a general of Bloods.  We are making guards (thank Qui_z) for blood and milara and such but again we come back to the time problem.  We will do our best.

Hey Leanthar,

Are we to follow these rules when casting cure and inflict spells in via Spontaneous casting?

Quote
Spontaneous Casting: A good cleric (or a neutral cleric of a good deity) can channel stored spell energy into healing spells that the cleric did not prepare ahead of time. The cleric can “lose” any prepared spell that is not a domain spell in order to cast any cure spell of the same spell level or lower (a cure spell is any spell with “cure” in its name).

An evil cleric (or a neutral cleric of an evil deity), can’t convert prepared spells to cure spells but can convert them to inflict spells (an inflict spell is one with “inflict” in its name).

A cleric who is neither good nor evil and whose deity is neither good nor evil can convert spells to either cure spells or inflict spells (player’s choice). Once the player makes this choice, it cannot be reversed. This choice also determines whether the cleric turns or commands undead (see below).

Title: RE: Do you have a question for Leanthar?

Those are standard 3rd edition cleric rules for DnD. Good Clerics get spontaneous healing, evil inflicts, and neutral decide at first level and stick with that forever unless some major change.

Heya Leanthar,

As you may or may not know, I am playing a Cleric of Pyrtechon.  One of my character's many goals is to protect the remaining Chromatic dragons from extinction.  Is there any clarification you can give on the current status of the Chromatic Dragons on Layonara?  If it is not common knowledge, could you PM or email me with what I might know?  Thanks a bunch.

Since you are a new character you would not know anything other than rumors and what you speak about to other players.  Eventually though you could find out more information but it will take a lot of conversations in game and a lot of RP.
All dragons (for most part) are in hiding as such they are very hard to find and most certainly do not want to be spoken about.  However most (but not all) are placed in the world.

One of my character's have found three of the Dragons. They hide pretty well.

Another question from me - What is the role of an average Cleric of Toran? How are they viewed by the average society? Are they bound by stricter rules than the Paladins? Also, how should we RP the Summons? They summon Lawful Good Mixed Celestials. Of course not as martyrs, but are they allies? Followers of Toran? Just wondering for future developments. Thanks!

Clerics are not quite as strict as a Paladin of Toran.  They are healers and protectors for the most part.  RP the summons *shrugs*?  Just RP them.

Leanthar,

I have a Lag question, if you don't mind. I believe that a new server is part of the solution, and have donated accordingly. My question is, would making CNR items and spell components stackable relieve the lag problems. I was noticing that the "database" that my characters open and close alot is their inventory. And boy do they have a lot of stuff in there! Thangah has taken up scribing. Needless to say he has a lot of little leaves and honey and eggs and so on in there. Wouldn't it make it a lot faster for the data base to call up one little symbol with a count in the corner than fifteen of the same little symbol? I just think that all the cool spell components and CNR stuff are the reason the lag is so bad. People have full inventories and access them hundreds of times a day. I go to the bank chest maybe once a week. Probably get into the ox pack twenty times a day. But that inventory gets a work out! Everytime I use a CNR craft table or buy an item from a merchant that thing opens up. Err sorry so long. I really hate Lag and hope that this suggestion helps.

Regards,
Toli

The main thing that will help lag is to get rid of all of the storage, that is the main problem.
Oxen would probably help quite a lot because they also use nwnx and the current version of nwnx and 1.64 are not working nicely together.  Acknowledged by Bioware even.  But they do not support nwnx so the creator needs to get a new version out.  But this is all volunteer work so if he doesn't then it is understandable.
As to the stackables thing in inventory, no I don't think that will help.  I could be wrong but I don't think so.

i was trying to create a ranger that while RP had dragon blood (i realize that there are no dragon subclasses as of yet with the exception of prestige classes) i simply wanted to give my character the depth of why is fights for the innacent and defends thoughs that would hunt down dragons for there own selfish reasons. but the DM that answerd my submission told me that there arnt any dragons left in the world but there has to be or else the dragon that summond us here would not exsiste as well as i have here of players going on quests to find dragons and have even read in this question page that you acknowledge that there are dragons. please explain

Oooo......I can answer this as I was schooled on it many many times.
If you look at the time line you'll notice several dragon purges. Imagine thousands of dragons one day then the next half that. Dragons have been hunted by humanoids, have hunted each other, and have been killed off over the past several thousand years. According to my knowledge there are only five dragons left. Note: There are dragons. But only five. So the rare and the ultra powerful are all that's left.

Yojoscomics, I don't want 1/2 dragon characters or such on the world as a PC right now, it does not fit with the campaign that is currently running.  1/2 dragons are also usually purely powerbuilding characters (but they are great RP as well if they are done right).  But pretty much that is why they are not allowed right now.

i dont understand why my character who will never gain from a draconic liniage and whos goal in life is to protect those dragons that are left would be restricted

As it's been said, it's not the abilities (or lack there of) it's the RP value. There are 5, dragons left. That's a hands worth of dragons. They are ultra powerful like near godlyness. Most if not all of them are in hiding and don't go on daily flies around the world. They are so rare infact that you may not see on for half a year (literally half or more of a RL year, maybe never.) The chances of your father being a dragon is slim to none.
Edit: Sorry about answering another question. I know this should be left strictly up to L so that the topic does not become confusing and a player obtain misinformation. Won't happen again. Scout's Honor. :)

Yojoscomics, I have already answered the question as to why.  *shrugs*  Only so much I can do/say.  That character (more specifically) that race will not be allowed it for a long time.

As far as the characters being moved over to the approval list that is because I haven't done it yet.  I prpmise if your character is approved then it does not matter what forum it is in whether it be the submissions or approval section.

I will get this done as soon as I can.  Its very time consuming.  Sorry..

This is a bit of a code tangent:

If I understand correctly, one of the problems with oxen is that every time the bag is opened there's a DB hit. Have you considered reimplementing oxen?

Thoughts that occur to my fevered brain (passingly familiar with NWNscript, but no experience in PW coding):

  * recode this thing to use a delaycommand so that the rest of NWN doesn't stall waiting for the database (depends on just how much SQL support there is in NWNX)
  * only hit the DB when the bag is taken off of/loaded on to the ox (I'm quietly hoping I misunderstood some of the posts and this is already what happens)
  * only hit the DB for the ox when the *character* is saved

As it's implemented now there's a dup bug; since the oxen can't store enchanted items this isn't a big problem, but if I know when a server crash is coming I can duplicate my hides.

Moving some other databasey things (chest, gold bank balance) to be stored in local variables and written out (even to the NWNX DB) when the character is saved should avoid some of the other loss/dup bugs that we're seeing reported on the boards recently.

If you need coding help, I'd be happy to spend moderate amounts of time reading over the code and suggesting/attempting fixes now, or probably 40+ hours during December. I'm a twisted enough person that it'd be almost as much fun as playing. :)

Is there any chance that the more bestial sub-races of Layonara could be coded to be able to eat their food raw?  Ogres Orcs, Goblins and Giant-kin love to feel it bleed and wiggle on the way down.  I also want to be able to eat grubworms.  I've done so in real life, and boy are they filling.

Also, do larger beastlike subraces have a higher metabolism that causes them to need to eat more often?  An elf could have a quarter of a loaf of bread in a day, while an ogre would eat maybe 3 or 4 wolves or maybe a full moose for dinner.  Halflings would eat about half a cow though... ;)

Lonnarin,
We can put that on our list of things to do but it is a huge list and this would be at the bottom probably.  So, yes possible, any time soon?  Not likely.

I recently purchased an ox. I thought it was for storage of the many items we find. I had alot of books and raw materials. it all disappeared when I (stacked it) on the ox. I found some heavy armor laying by the road, and not wanting to carry it around with the other set of armor I was already carrying I put it on the ox,they all disappeared. I was wanting to fing a place to sell the armor. But it's gone now. I have searched the forums on oxen and found a little information, and there was nothing in the manual.
Have I missed something somewhere on the use of an oxen? Also I read about the chests in the banks how do they work?

Is there a vendor in hlint to buy potions of healing? I could of swore I purchased one there,I asked other players in game but no on knows.
thanks so much

Potions of Healing can be purchased at any temple.  Like the temple of Ilsare in Hlint.

And it's been stated numerous times that oxen are for CNR ingredients only.  Not finished product like scrolls, armor, weapons, etc.  And the ox even states to not put stackable items on it.

As a new player to Layonara, I attempted to integrate my character into the "geography" of the land i.e. use actual town names in my bio (Lakeside, North Fort). I was wondering if there is or could be an index of sorts for major/ minor towns that could give a brief economic/social/racial profile so players could have a better idea of urban areas and what goes on there.

The handbook has quite a detailed entry for many towns and cities and areas(pages 69-123).  You can get it from the Downloads section.

Yay! More questions!
  1. I know East server is still being heavily worked on to get it populated but, do you have an estimate on a release date for the "dreaded server of certain death"?
  2. I know the Underdark exists on East server, but from what I've heard that's it, no West or Central. Would it be possible to eventually spread some small tunnels through West and Central, that lead to East and possibly the most deadly areas on Layonara??
Example for questions 2: The Dungeon of the Eye. Beholders, Ithilid, Umber Hulks, very fun to fight and if you notice all underdark creatures. Perhaps make the Dungeon of the eye a bit longer 4-6 areas (a lot of work I know just an idea for eventually), and lead to another small underdark area on Central which would be extremely hard to get through 5-12 areas (again I know insane just thoughts) and eventually you'd travel all the way to the east server underdark?
  3. Sorry but I am fascinated with the underdark so......could you give me a rough estimate on what percentage of East server the underdark is. Ie: 20% of east server areas are composed of the Underdark.
  4. Also will there be any alternate plane areas worked into Central or East? (I say Central or East because I doubt any characters level 1-10 would want to go to another plane)
  5. I posted a while ago about constellations (maybe it was a PM not sure) and this is related. In Dragon Lance, the gods are shown in the sky as star constellations, even though I know star constellations haven't really been done or finnished yet will the gods and the constellations refelct the same way?
  6. On a similar note to question 5. Do the two moons, Ausir & Orn, have any connection with the gods, other planes, or Sinthar Bloodstone similar to what I asked about the constellations above? (don't have to answer it if it's something too big)
  7. I noticed that in the hand book there are Underdark Cities....will these cities be actually in the Underdark on East server?
  8. (Only if 7 is answered yes) Will these cities be hostile to all, or only people of a certain alignment, or only to characters that aren't drow?
  9. (Last one) I've recently come to the conclusion that I'm infected with "Layonariosis" you wouldn't know of a cure would you? ;)

Yes, all gods are symbolized in constellations. However, constellations are not the gods themselves. There are more constellations than there are gods.

How much wood could a wizard chuck cut if a wizard chuck could cut wood? *smiles*

Any idea if there would ever be something that a wizard might be able to equip to use an axe? Perhaps some different tool that might be used on a tree to get something besides a branch that could be used to make sawdust for paper for scribing?

Is there any chance the stats used in crafting my be altered or substitued for other stats?  For instance gem cutting.  Dexterity and Charisma... perhaps have Intelligence be substitued for charisma?  I'm having a hard time forcing my "inner strength" onto the rocks and thought maybe I could find an intelligent way to compensate.

QUESTION 1
Are the Craft Armor and Craft Weapon skills used in the Layonara, or are we to use the server creation system instead?

Reason I ask, I am creating a Ranger/Wizard (who will eventually be an Arcane Archer)  I would like to be able to make my own arrows and bows.  So was wondering what was the best way to do that on this server?

QUESTION 2
I noticed that you have player houses.  Is it possible to get a non-standard home?

Reason for asking...  Eventually (and this VERY LONG TERM GOAL) I'd like to get Hogul a little in ground hut vs the standard house, with a little turnip garden.  Just thought it be more "homey" for the little guy.

Thanks,

#1, Do not use these nwn crafting skills, we use only CNR.  Now... We do have a customization system in the craft hall that allows customization of your armor and weapons and it uses the nwn craft skills...but you don't need to put many points in for that.  Players can give you a better answer to this one.
#2, Yes it is possible.  I might be a little slow in getting to it but I try to add flavor to the houses.  I know on my plate is to try and allow a few ships as "houses" and your request is not overly uncommon either.

Ok you made the mistake for having this thread so I figure the least I can do is ask...

Question
You have made poison crafting for neutrals and evils only... however, you allow races such as drow and (in my case) goblin, where poison is sort of a "norm" for the culture/race.  Heck go to the kobold cave, and your gone get hit with it.  Would there be the possiblity to get/work toward a poison crafting tool usable by a Good aligned character?  If so, what would be the process.

Reason for asking... as I play my poor little turnip farmer I want to be a support type character.  I don't ever see him collecting a +2 or higher bow...  actually I dont like using the bow cause EVERYONE has one, and would like to use a sling.  However limiting the character to d4 and or d6 damage sort of defeats it's purpose... where by using poison he becomes useful and fits the idea of a sly weak gobo try'n to make it in his adventuring world by using those means normally available to him.  I wouldn't expect this to be vendor item but something special earned thru play.

Ok, makes sense, but that brings up the question...  If we see someone crafting poison are we to assume In-Character, that the character is evil?

I do recall something being said some place that there would be "explaining" to do.

  • Could we get a list of the constellations of stars?
  • I vaguely remember a map that gave distance as well as city names, did this ever exist and if so could we get it back?
  • And last, how many GMs are robots, and is Ozy actually a super computer program like Braniac from the Super Man Comics?

Not sure this one is answerable?  I was just curious about the time Yashilla has spent since her first day in Hlint.  I wanted to think about the fact that time marches on thus, we age and mature.  I want to incorperate the maturity process not just in terms of character lvl but also age into RPing the character.  I searched "sundial" in the forums and got the wonderful and not overly complicated :) "Orth multiply by 15" rule to deterimine calendar time on layonara based on RL time.  I did this today and well naturally it worked and I got the time to within a few days which is good enough for what I need.

So here is the question.  How did time march on earlier?  Was there a magical formula that I can use to count backwards? I started playing online here Dec '04. I was hoping to figure out approximately how long Yashilla's been gone from her family and I'd be happy with an accuracy of +/- 1 month.  I kick myself for it as I failed to record that sundial time when I first got here.
Title: RE: Do you have a question for Leanthar?
Post by: orth on February 24, 2005, 01:07:00 pm
40.98457961 in game months Yashilla.
Title: RE: Do you have a question for Leanthar?
Post by: ZeroVega on February 24, 2005, 01:10:00 pm
Might just be me, but I don't regard the Sundial in Hlint for acurate In Game time. There's a Timeline here on the forum, it's updated I'd say every few months and I think that's the best we can do. People (including me when I played a human) complained that in game time would lead to mass aging. 48 RL minutes is an in game day. 60 RL minutes x 24 hours = 1440 Then take 1440 RL minutes in a day, and divide that by 48 RL minutes to get an in game day and you have 30 in game days to one RL day.
Now this might just be me, but thirty in game years, in one in game year, seems a bit steep to me. That would make a certain character I know at the age where people usually turn to dust. Some human characters have been played for 1.5-2.5 years here! that's 45-75 years! Taking into consideration that most characters start around the average age of 20-28 that'd make them way to old to be doing what they're doing. I don't care how flipping Epic you are. You're 85 in those days, you've been dead for twenty years.
So just go off the timeline. If you can't remember where you started on the timeline. Make something up.

Leanthar, how do you want Epic or near-Epic Wizards to act in your world? Would you prefer a Tolkienesque Wizard, staying in the background and helping when they are really needed? With Llu, I had always intended for her at one time to step away from the actual fight and be a guide to the new armies of Bloodstone.

because i´m oft too busy to play a longtime on layo(i can stay oft only one or 2 hours for play), i cannot oft do a quest (in fact in 10 month i have been in 3 session of a quest)

My question is about languages.(perhaps a couple of others)
Being given ear for animals which is class based.
How do I get other languages?

For a Tiefling, it is common, infernal and abyssal. Though if the character is from the abyss, it would just be common and abyssal.

After looking through planewalker and re-reading character bio. Would it not be likely that Ishara could speak common, abyssal and gish.

Does a druid that is planetouched think the same way as a druid from any of the other crystal spheres?

Amd how come a druid does have access to more animal-based spells, like cat's grace, owl's wisdom, or fox's cunning?

"How do I get other languages?"
By RPing in game with other players and studying, it is a fairly long process--some languages are very long.  You must also have an intelligence high enough to learn the language(s). Each + (+1, +2, +3 etc.) in Intelligence allows you to learn one more language.
"...After looking through planewalker and re-reading character bio. Would it not be likely that Ishara could speak common, abyssal and gish."
  That would depend.
"ame touched think the same way as a druid from any of the other crystal spheres?"
Cyrstal spheres?  Since I don't know what you are referring to then I doubt it.  "Amd how come a druid does have access to more animal-based spells, like cat's grace, owl's wisdom, or fox's cunning?"
DARN good question!  Something I have wondered about D&D in general.  We are stuck with D&D rules and Bioware's implementation of them. *shrugs*

Each game realm is a separate crystal sphere. The term comes from Spelljammer. Like Greyhawk, Oerth, Dark Sun, etc.

I was just wondering about those that are planetouched. Most having come from the outer planes, would they not have access to some skills that other classes and races would not.

Still trying to figure out also, how Tiefling with infernal heritage would be limited to chaotic, as that would be abyssal. Would not an infernal be lawful or evil?

How does a druid following xeen get the attention of her deity? I am sure being the only one in Layonara might be rewarded with some acknowledgement, or does she have to go to the main Xeen temple in Karthy?

And there is still the question of poisons, and other animal- or plant- based resources that a druid should have access to, but they do not, why or why not?

"The two planetouched varieties described here are the most common. Aasimars are humans with some trace of celestial blood in their veins, and tieflings have some fiendishness in their family tree."

Tieflings have fiendish blood.  Fiendish=demon  Infernal=Devil.  I have absolute NO idea why infernal is listed as one of their starting languages, it doesnt make any sense.

Teiflings are chaotic because they have demonic blood, demons are chaotic.

I'm not sure what something that has infernal blood is called.

Is there any chance for either a normal class or a PrC that would benefit a priestess of Goran?
In the old system there was a book, supplement really, that had a subclass of fighter, called the Smithy. Any chance of there being a PrC that is craft specific, like tinkering or such?
The reason I am asking this, is that IC, and because Azaria likes to build things rather than go on ventures, Celgar did mention Tyson, which she found out, is of Lar from Ozymandias. Golems are just one of her interests.
Also, is there any chance that thieves tools can be used to do more than just pick locks and remove traps?

While I don't want to say that your questions will never happen it will be a while at the very least.
The team has spoken about a crafting class a few times but that is very difficult to do in nwn--nearly impossible.
The thieves tools... what else do you want to use them for?

Its known that thieves picks and tools, include picks(given), files, pins and various other gizmos. What I am wondering, could they also include a variety of other tools for fabrication, or does that require other assortments of tools?
Think what I would like to see, if at all possible, is the tools aid in fabrication for tinkering. With the long list of materials required to make such tools, should they not be able to do more than just pick locks and disarm/remove traps?

Quote from Leanthar

"You need to have made an impact on the world in some way, that does not mean you need to be intracetly involved in the plot quests--just in some way make an impact on the world in a positive and long term way."

You said "positive"...what about "negative"?
Title: RE: Do you have a question for Leanthar?
Post by: Leanthar on September 22, 2005, 06:25:00 am
"positive" means in a way that does not harm the community and shows responsibility within the community and the game world.  It does not speak about your character as a whole.
However...you character must make a difference in the world--negative or positive (good or evil) but it needs to be the character that makes a difference in this way.  And then the player him/herself must make a positive effect as stated above.

Just a simple question.
Why is XP requirement so high in Layonara?
Not really complaining about it, well maybe just a little, 360,000 xp to go to next level seems a bit steep, to go from 8th to 9th.
Most 12th lvl characters require between 300k to 450k to go to 13th, but given the math and with each lvl attained the amount of xp required to go to next level keeps doubling.
XP 160000 required for 8th, then 320000 xp required to go to 9th, it there a cap to the doubling of xp, cause if it keeps doubling, my character will have to start combating demons or gods to gain a level by the time she reaches 12th lvl combined.

Not sure if I am not supposed to be posting on this answer, if not, I hope Leanthar does not smite me too hard..:)

This might help a bit: http://www.layonaraonline.com/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=3617&posts=4 (http://www.layonaraonline.com/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=3617&posts=4).

That will at least show you the level progression and the amount of XP needed.

I could hazard a guess as to why the XP needed is high, but I will leave that to Leanthar so you get the official answer. :)

(Oh..and you only need 160,000 to go from 8th to 9th. ;) )

I want it high because I don't want the server loaded full of epic characters inside of a few months.  We have not had a character wipe in about two years and we still have a limited number of epic characters.  Epic should be just that, epic, and if I allowed everybody to get to 15+ inside of a month or two then I would not have Layonara in its online version.  In addition it is good for you to RP through your character and the longer it takes to level the better you get to know your character.  Well except for those that still want to go to 20th level in 4 or so months (some less), those people are just hack and slashing and I will never be convinced that they are here to RP--they aren't--at least not at this time.

Is there any way to increase character attributes other than by worn magic item or level increase. Remembering that in NWN there were potions that caused a permanent increase, and also in the original DnD game there was manuals that an adventurer could find that increased level or attributes, such as Manual of Puissant Skill at Arms, just an example.
Such items were never cheats in my book, but they were reason enough in some cases for adventurer to go on a quest.
Actually, what got me thinking about this was Owen's story of the Identity switching crystal.

I'm pretty sure the only things that gives a NATURAL increase to stats are epic stat feats.

That... a deck of many things.... but the question is... would you draw?

Komoda, agreed they are not cheats and handled in a pnp style format they are a great way to handle things.  Right now we are using nwn to enforce character legality and if we allow potions, books etc. to permanently jump points in stats and/or give feats and such then I am pretty sure that the character would become invalid.  On top of that, it is a matter of oh say a day or two before everything is known about all potions/books etc. (and their locations) and everybody will have those permanent stats/feats etc.--which kind of makes the idea behind this moot.  I do understand your thinking though, I just don't think we can do that at this time.

Everything in NWN counts towards the maximum of +12 for ability stats, except for the epicfeats. I think that also goes for the skins.

In my humble opinion, such magical potions and/or devices should be as uncommon as seeing psuedo-dragon speaking greek to socrates while enjoying a chess game, but they are out there. Either that or just have recipes with ingredients that are more risk to attain than let say, fighting an ancient black dragon.
Just a thought.

There are quite a few characters that wouldnt have that much trouble with an ancient black dragon.  At least an ancient black dragon as per the monster manual *winks*

Post by: on October 09, 2005, 12:10:00 am
Now this is only a question, and it is not my wish to rewrite the whole magic system of the game world.

In my character development thread, I had posted a belief of my character of something called the Runes of Power. These are the elemental runes, keys to creation, they are supposed to hold great wisdom, but what they are no one knows, they have been lost to antiquity.
Now in the development thread, the existence of the runes were stories told to every child within my characters clan. They were stories, they may be fact or fable, but they were stories told to young gnomes as an inspiration. In the stories it was told the keys of creation were originally given to each of the races, and over time, many of the runes had become lost, either due to ignorance, misfortune or just plainly forgotten as races opted for further and better understanding of the weave.
Such a belief, is not loosely based, as it was something I thought of after reading the history of LO, of what was before the dragon gods and of the gods that came after. Others may believe in character, and that is just it, the weave has always been, but to my character she believes that may have been always there, but such a resource was only known to a few. Again, we are going back on the stories of the runes, the runes are keys to creation, and perhaps it was these keys that were used to make the first races. They in themselves mught be very powerful artifacts and every part of the weave. My character does not know that, but she does believe the keys are the foundations to every race on Layonara that have developed a civilization. The character only has the stories, whether fact or fable, it is the seeking of that knowledge which is important.
Ice believes that perhaps suggesting the runes as a premise for a CDQ would rewrite the magic system of LO. No. If anything I believe it would strengthen and give the weave perhaps more of a history, a different timeline perhaps, one that is not of the war with dragons and sinthar. It might explain why the dragons came to layonara in the first place, might explain more of how the races were created to be as slaves. Might explain more about the bloodwells. It might also explain how sinthar was able to stop time without using the weave.
The whole runes idea, is a gnomish belief in their account of history.
Just as it is their belief that each star in the sky is a sphere with other worlds within.

So this whole long winded introduction and idea comes down to this question.

What do you think?

Its basically the simple premise, of the modern psychologist disbelieving in the supernatural until they have proof. You have a cleric of goran disbelieving in the weave as the be-it-all unless she finds proof, and casting spells is not enough proof.
Goran has great machines constructed not of the weave, but of pure science, and it is these machines that provide the clerics of goran their ability to enact their will.

On a completely different topic.
Some of us have noticed, that with each reset of the game (or server). Encounters have been getting tougher, or just plainly lethal. Monsters are have become fanatical in intent, and almost all encounters are near fatal.
I just do not know how to say this, but I guess just coming out and voicing my opinion is better than holding anything back.
Encounters seem to be geared to the high level characters that are already in play. Characters that have all the fancy armors, fancy weapons and magical items.
The low level characters, and I mean those lower than 12th, have little chance in hell of doing anything except staying close to Hlint. Now near as I can figure, not all encounters, from a DMs perspective, should be fanatical in mentality or lethal. Given a boar, will defend its territory, but for a bird to attack you with all the fervor of a fanatic. That is a bit much.
Last night, Thursday, October 13th. We (party) went for almonds, a needed component for Essence of Grace. What would you know, almonds are guarded by some really nasty giants. These giants were fanatical and when did giants get the know how to making bows? I can understand clubs and spears, but bows?
The quest for almonds killed my character three times last nights. No, I did not have fun. Spent most of my time sitting in reflection or running from encounters. Even in a party of four, which you would think would be enough to protect self from another excursion to the soul mothers domain, was not enough.
I am finding that in order to survive any venture, one neeeds to have at least one or two high level characters in order to survive. Unfortunately many of the high level characters have become merchants and do not adventure, settling for the need to amass great wealth in gold. They roleplay among themselves, and when they do adventure, they do so enmasse. It would seem that the encounters in game are geared towards them and their enjoyment, whereas the low levels get mooshed.
Not saying that the game is not fun, but as a low level character, there should be ventures that five low level characters should be able to survive.

By the way, question, how many high level characters are at their current levels because they managed to do so before you revised the needed xp required to gain a level?
Bone Golems in Dire Wood has basically sealed those wooods from low level characters.

When I was rping my first character, survival was a bit easier, but now i find, with each new reset, the game is becoming increasingly more difficult, and I do not think it is because of my current level either, as other players ahve noticed it as well.

The XP to level has always been custom in Layonara... and it used to be tougher when there was XP lost on death. Those that have made it EPIC so far have not walked as easy a road as you seem to imply.. infact it was much harder.

I am not sure what you are mentioning wih each reset its gotten harder as there have been few changes to the placed encounters especially on west.

It seems with every post you make you are taking a dig at the core of Layonara and how things are done here because it doesn't fall in line with exactly how you think things should be for your character.

Komoda:
I'd point out to you that nearly all of Layonara is designed around groups, not solo adventurers.  The West server is intended primarily for 1-10 level characters, but that's not to say that all areas on West are suitable for that entire range, nor for all possible groups.  Also, depending on one's character, he/she may not be able to survive easily even at 10th level.  My 16th level (multi-classed, 11/5 split) character can get his butt kicked on Mistone in some areas, primarily because he is a spellcaster and does not wear armor that would interfere with his casting, and yet he spawns monsters suitable to someone of higher level.  It's not pretty.
Read about the Dire Wood and tell me if you think that area should be a walk in the park.  That was a massive battlefield and is a massive graveyard.  It's not a good place to be.  That said, I have seen characters who are below 12th level, and in a group, make good work of the things in Dire Wood.  It can be done.  If you can't do it alone, or if your group cannot do it, then perhaps you need to change the group.  For example, add more muscle or spell power.
The giants you spoke of were on Rilara, not Mistone.  Rilara is essentially governed by Milara, one of Blood's generals.  It's conceivable to think that Milara may be equiping the giants there with bows/crossbows to further aid in thinning out the hero population that insists on treading upon his lands.  It's also conceivable to think that these giants have been looting the corpses of those unlucky folks who come and try to steal their almonds and honey (mmmm....honey baked almonds....) and picking up a few bows in the process and maybe figuring out how to use them well enough.
There is a war on.  Expect danger.  If you would have proceeded to Bloody Gate and beyond, you may have met up with things far worse than giants, things that give even high-level characters a hard time.
Since I take care of the updates, I can tell you with some great certainty that in the last several updates, there have been no changes to the encounters or the creatures in those encounters.  Of the new/updated creatures that have been included, they consist primarily of very specific (storied) creatures and/or customized monsters that will be initially used on quests only.  And certainly the ones you mentioned have not been touched.
Having said all this, it's important to remember 2 things:
  1) This world is dynamic, and changes do happen.  Some benefit the players/characters, others do not.  Some make things easier, others make things harder.  Like life, bad things happen if you go into the wrong places, and such places are not always marked with "Danger" signs.
  2) There is a war in Layonara...a massive one...and very recently, that war finally reached Mistone.  It is no longer a "safe" haven from the encroachment of Blood and his forces.
Edit: Last thing.  The encounters scale up depending on the level of those entering the encounter area.  You will find that they will in fact get harder as you gain levels.  This is how it was designed to work, and it has been that way for a very long time, along with the XP progression.  Also, as your level increases relative to the monsters, the XP you get for kills will decrease.  As such, most creatures on West will give higher-level characters 1 XP regardless of how difficult it is to defeat. So high-level characters really get little to nothing out of West, dispelling the idea that it is somehow a haven for higher-level characters at the expense of low-level characters.

A bit long, given examples and explanations

It may sound like I am digging at the core of the game. Then again, what experienced GM does not? The manual is great for players, but unless I delve deeply into the inner working of the game and ask questions, how then can I make a feasible contribution to the games expansion.
It may sound like I am being harsh, or even complaintive. The manual does not go into the deatils that i wish to know. Also, Leanthar is the creator of the game, and all those that are contributing GMs, helped make it what it is today. Just wanting to understand and tap into your train of thoughts. Once I am there, and all the questions I have, have been asked and answered. Then maybe I can make a substantial contribution.
Hopefully, I do not get my a#@ kicked from the server.

Also I understand, that xp was adjusted as so many found it easy to gain levels, but at the same time, being killed and losing xp becuase of it, one had to be thankful. If I remember the rules to being raised from the dead, one did lose xp. If they were resurrected they lost one point from all physical attributes, permanently. And, if you were reincarnated, then you lost all memory of your previous character and had to start all over again at first level, that is if you came back as a humanoid that could be an adventurer. Think might be the reason why they published the humanoids handbook.
As for the war, most of the high level characters started when sinthar was just beginning his reign of cleansing upon the world.
Also I am not the only one that thinks the odds are stacked against their characters. Just when you think you are just getting your head above the surface of the water. Not only is something pushing your head beneath the surface of the water, but someone else is also opening the flood gates up a bit.
Dire Wood was hard enough without the Bone Golems, now its almost impossible. I did say almost, not saying that it is not, but if my character was not acting in accordance with her alignment. Would be working on destroying the place utterly and entirely, forsaking all life within just to be rid of the place.
Remember also, that the character thinks her home was consumed by shadows, so naturally each trip through the domain of the soul mother has her not only hating the place all the more, but also hating the bindstone (which of course is of the weave) which is a connection to the place.
My character would love to send the soul mother into oblivion and take half of all her coin and see how she likes it.

We all would like to contribute something, some of us a bit more than others. Some are happy just roleplaying, some are happy being hack&slash characters, some even dedicate their characters to just collecting coin. My character is creative.

Layonara is an rp server, but it seems little xp is based on actual rp and more on hack&slash.
The monsters are all fanatical and relentless, and those creatures that are supposed to be allies, are also trying to kill you, with just as much fanaticism as the monsters you are trying to avoid.

In an actual scenario, this taken from sitdown, if you can not defeat an opponent you run and hide, or run for safety. This is very hard to do, when you run from one frame to another, and when you enter the next frame, and you know the creature you are running from as way back behind you, you enter the next frame, the monster starts on top of you. Found this out when my party accidentally came across the kenku, who are actually supposed to be shy, they were anything but shy. Chased me not from one frame but into the third. They would not stop until I was dead. I swear if I my character could run any faster, they would have probably met me in point harbor anyways and killed me there as I boarded the ship for Port Hampshire.
This to me does not seem right for roleplay.

I would also like to make a note.
As an experienced GM, having been player also. Each experienced Gm knows that the best campaigns, and even worlds, seem to be very successful when the players themselves contribute not only their time in rp, but also contribute their creativity to the game. The Gm is there to rp too. They just have a better time at it than the players, as they have a diversity in which to rp with, but if the GM kills characters outright within the first couple of levels, and makes their world more challenging than the levels by which the players can have their characters act within, then the rp experience becomes frustrating.
I have played Rolemaster, it takes almost two hours to make a character, only to have them die within the first 30 min of an adventure. In that system, you spend more time in making a character than actual roleplaying. The same can be said about GURPS, Traveller, Twilight 2000 and quite a few others. Miught also explain why many of these games are no longer popular.

Layonara Online is a great world, love what you have done with it. Just think low level characters need a break once and while. As a rule, I do not try to openly kill my players off until they hit like 12th level. The players know this, and they accept it.

Komodo,
I am not sure how else to say this because we have tried to explain it a number of times in other threads but you keep bringing this up.  The XP is like it is for a reason and it will remain so.  The creature difficulty is as it is for a reason and it will remain so.  *shrugs* I don't know how else to tell you that in any clearer terms than that.
What is happening here, it seems at least, is that we are not making changes to your liking and thusly we are doing something 'wrong'... *shrugs* I will not answer any more questions on this XP subject.  It is old.

I think you hit the nail here when you said "In an actual scenario, this taken from sitdown."  I assume here that you mean PnP.  You are right about this.  But what you are failing to see in my opinion is that this is NWN and not PnP.  There are only so many things that can be done with the mechanics of the game and its A.I.  I am sure others can confirm this or tell me I am wrong, but I dont think you can adjust a creatures aggressiveness to that varying a degree.  It either likes you, doesn't like you, or could care less about you.  So, when you run into a creature that doesnt like you, it is going to chase you down as if you have just insulted its mother with the most heinous insult on the planet.  Is that right?  Maybe not, but it is something you have to live with in the game.  Again, anyone who knows this for sure please confirm or let me know I am wrong.

As to the openly trying to kill lower level players, from a players perspective, I disagree here.  I have read it all over the place that Layo is a group based world.  You have to have a good group to tangle with a lot of the encounters.  It is as simple as that.  It also encourages RP between players which is almost always a good thing.

On that note, I have been killed by the giants that guard the almonds as well.  And for the record, I was with a group of characters that were 'high level'.

You have to play smart and know where you are going.  Blind exploration is dangerous as it should be.  I like the fact that life is hard on Layonara.  If life wasn't hard then what would you need heroes for?

And don't take this as a mean spirited rebuke of your points.  I am just giving you my perspective as another player here.

Was not suggesting any changes Leanthar to the xp system.

There is everything else mentioned in the body of my last post.
Examples and explanations.

How can I even contribute to the world of layonara without someone at least going to establish a disussion. The whole xp subject is redundant. I voiced my opinion and received my response. what more is there to say about it? Absolutely nothing. It's set in stone.

I also know that you are very busy, RL and with Layonara.
I am also thankful that you are quick to respond to my posts within this thread.
All are questions I have for the creator, just as any player would have questions for Gary. Let me just say that being a big fan of DnD, wish the internet was around when I was first introduced to DnD as I had many questions to ask the creator of Mazes and Monsters, which became DnD.
Understanding is key to creating.

Its the rest of the previous post to this, that I would like your input.

Komodo, I will get back to this when I have some time.  I feel like I am hashing things over and over and over though.
Title: RE: Do you have a question for Leanthar?

I guess here's the big question Komoda:
What is it you would like to contribute to the world?
Or perhaps I should ask, why do you feel you cannot contribute without (warning: exaggeration ahead) knowing why every blade of grass is placed as it is?
I understand your curiosity and the need to know more about things.  And please don't take this as criticism....because it's not.
Many of the things you bring up are interesting, and bring richness to a campaign.  However, the #1 problem with most of them are completely impractical in an online game setting.  The NWN engine imposes many restrictions.  Some of which we can work around, some of which we cannot.
That being said, there is a whole lot more freedom that exists when on a GM-led quest that, if properly RPed, can be accomplished.  This is akin to PnP gaming where you work with a GM to accomplish something other than move/attack/move/attack/etc.
It comes down to this...this is an RP server.  People RP things all the time that cannot otherwise be done due to the limits of the gaming engine.  My only remaining suggestion is to explore such options in lieu of having actual game mechanics to support it.
As for what you can contribute....again, what do you want to contribute?  You've thrown out tons of ideas, but really, what is your target.  Perhaps if you can better define things, it would help us all greatly in understanding what you want to do.  Also keep in mind, there are plenty of ways to contribute to Layonara without adding content.

Sure, maybe the whole concept of technology in the world of Layonara is maybe perhaps the wrong word to use. It was the word I chose to use. I think the complication here is not so much the word, but perhaps the idea that technology, is just technical science. The idea of it has been with us for 1000's of years. The discovery of mixing copper and tin, was probably an error in the intial metallurgical process. There is still amount of technology there.
As for a contribution, it seems that many of my ideas, were actually put out there to stimulate creativity among those that are in the forums. Not to say that it was not there before, but may be more so now. Do not rightly know.
I think the biggest problem I am facing is the simple fact, with maiantenance and coding needed to keep this whole world alive, is a daunting task. Really, all I want to do is contribute ideas, and maybe something will be done in whole or in part.
Not trying to change anything, what you have works. Perhaps stir the pot of ideas in others and future possibilities.

After taking the XP my character has and using CEP just to see where my character would be, I understand why xp is set the way it is. If the game had stayed the way it was originally, you would have a lot of epic characters running around, that and the fact that it disrupt the balance of the game immensely. Got it. My apologies for being so stubborn.

By the way, is there any way to make tools more durable or give bonuses to when using them in crafting or in the aquisition of a better yield?
Thieves tools have an increasing bonus, is it possible for other tools to have similar bonuses in their use?

Now I know that you have perused the PrCs, and there are some that you have accepted and others that you refuse to allow.

I know the RDD is very difficult PrC to attain and can only be done by CDQ. My question is in regard to the PrC, Initiate of the Draconic Mysteries. With all the dragons being killed off by Sinthar for banishing him, and i am not asking for my character to be able to transform into a dragon as the PrC is outlined, that would be no good for game balance.
I was thinking of a PrC that would preserve the wisdom of the dragons.

Not all dragons are dead, though a good amount are.  Also, just in case you did not know about 5.5 years ago (in-game time mind you) a large amount of young dragons (metallic's) were returned to the world.
I highly doubt that PrC will be allowed in the game... to be perfectly honest I don't know if any more more PrC's will be put in to the game--they are not high on our priority list.

oh, uh...  just to throw my two cents in here.....  if you think Layo monsters are tough, you don't even want to know what the monsters were like on some of the other servers I've played on.  The Layo monsters are soooo much closer to actual DnD monsters, I was really surprised when I first joined.  That is, coming from the 'power servers' I played on where the monsters there could kill a 40th level character (mind, you, not just any 40th lvl, as I had +10 armor, ten books that provided the heal spell, a staff that launched hellballs, a sword that did an extra 2d12 magic, 2d12 slashing, and 2d12 piercing damage, and much, much more) in two hits.  Half of the >>>> 9TH

A question about Druids.

I read the thread about druids and there are Dwarven Druids from Underground.

The thing that troubles me is the restrictions on armor & shields as well as weapon makeup.
Like when you fell a golem arn't you suposed to be able to collect its remains and in a way "recycle" those ores?
I just cant see your underground Dwarf running around using only leather, wood, and chipped stone.

I was thinking of using #3 saying that she fell hard during battle (-9.75) and was left for dead by both sides, but the life in the rocks, ores, gems, water and Likens around her kept her alive and healed her. 36 hours later she came to only remembering that she fell to a Drugar that looked like, *looking to her left she sees him* yuck, there he is. *thinking to herself she askes* {am I dead ?} *and has a reashuring feeling of life* [receves fealings from all around that she is safe and alive] *she looks around quickly and sees no life around her stands and starts for home leaning on the rock walls, this time getting a feeling like her mom is helping her home after she hurt herself as a child* etc. etc.

so as the forest gives parts of itself to aid the druid shouldn't the underground respond the same way?
Title: Re: Do you have a question for Leanthar?
Post by: Leanthar on January 31, 2006, 08:11:45 pm
Yes of course you can collect the remains. Collecting and crafting/enhancing are FAR FAR different though. While the CNR system allows ‘recycling’ that does NOT mean a DRUID can do it automatically—as you are suggesting—not even remotely close.

“…I just cant see your underground Dwarf running around using only leather, wood, and chipped stone…”

Agreed, a ‘standard/well known dwarf—as they are defined’ wouldn’t—but a druid dwarf is most certainly not a standard/well known dwarf.

This rule applies across the board. The race does not make the class—keep that in mind

This is a question about ECQD quests. I had a discussion ingame with Brac about this and he suggested I ask you about it L. I have to ask when do you count 12 months from, since Ive been gone for so long with gotak, and now finnaly are back. I had around 10 months played with Gotak before he permed. does those 10 months counts with the requierment fo 12months that a player needs for ECDQ's? Or do you count from the time I came back from perm status?

Those 10 months count (before you left) and then any time after you returned will count.  So by the time you get to 20th you will likely be past your 'year mark'.

I was interested to find that in Prantz, that several minor changes were made. Temples got pulled down, there are more dwarves patrolling the streets.

My question is: are these changes made in the game dependent on character actions or an outcome of a campaign? I arrived after Blood was destroyed so I did not know what were the finer details.

PS. on another note, on one of the videos I saw when I first got introduced to Layonara, I saw the beautiful sunrise and sunset.  Are they coming back? ;)

I was wondering if the monsters in The Broken Forest eventualy will be degraded a bit.
Although i understand that they were changed to stop the goldruns,i think that they are now too strong to be in a central place like Broken were lowlevell characters run through to get from one place to the other.
Title: Re: Do you have a question for Leanthar?
Post by: Leanthar on September 30, 2006, 05:45:23 am
@Tanman, The changes in Prantz came about due to the war with Bloodstone and how the characters fared at that time...It happened to be when Blood was defeated in another battle and so the General stayed in that location and made it his own. So in this case it was due to character outcome and it didn't change because the end of the plot happened then as well. A LOT of things happen due to characters, they are the ones that change the world as they work with normal quests, quest series, and the plot.

The beutiful sunrises and sunsets will be back yes, but not for a while. Though I do understand how the clouds are gloomy and all of that....so we will work with it in due time.

@jan, that quest was supposed to be running now but the GM got busy in RL and had to leave the team. It has now been given to another GM and he will be running the series that will allow characters to change that section of the world (for better or for worse). That series is more than about that forest though, some other major things happening in it...but that is one of the things the players will be working on.

Just to add a bit to this...there is a safe way through the Broken Forest, which can be navigated by anyone, regardless of level, regardless of the ability to become invisible or to hide from sight. The only hint I'll give to that path is that it is pretty much identical to the safe path that existed in the old Broken Forest.

I have two question actualy.
1 can a guild hall for a guild bare the name of someone that the guild loved and permed like let say when you went in the guild hall the loading screen and name on the party pictures would be Merrick Hall. But on the sings outside of the guild hall have the name of the guild. Example:
Illvacla oe El'wilmlayla   (Angels)   Merrick Hall
2 if provided pics of the permed player, could a coloured replica be amde as a statue in the guild hall?

#2, no, sorry.

Leanthar: As the original GM of the gameworld of Layonara back in its AD&D days, you're the best person to answer this.

How has the feel of the campaign setting changed in the time that Layonara has been online, and in what ways?
Title: Re: Do you have a question for Leanthar?
Post by: Leanthar on October 11, 2006, 04:18:01 pm
Good question. It is quite a bit different. It is no longer solely focused on D&D and is moving further away from it in certains ways. But that has to happen as Layonara is different, it just is, and D&D is not made for online game play, it just isn't.

The "feel" of the world is still the same, and the immersive and details of the world is even better than it was before. So much more has been defined and in a far more consistent way than I had things for a while.

The world is more of an online world and defined for questing and immersiveness and that is just being more and more defined.

So...the PnP days were great and we had a ton of fun. But if I took the world as it is now and brought it back to just PnP days (which is not going to happen mind you) we would have even more fun because it is more defined and yet it has kept the heart of what it has always been...allowing players to, in some way, change things around them. Players made a difference back then and they still do now.

One of my favorites is the Realms of Arkania series. I enjoyed nearly all of the old ones but that particular one is what got me interested in RP, stat building, character creation etc. And that lead to my first D&D world which eventually lead to Layonara. I played all of the other ones as well but that is the one that sticks out in my mind.

Ah, yes.  Well, supposing someone wanted to play an evil character, but couldn't get it approved... so got approved as TN and played... say... CE anyway?

At least we know who he's not.
Title: Re: Do you have a question for Leanthar?
Post by: ZeroVega on October 26, 2006, 05:42:53 am
Think he means more along the lines of... a TN person is completely neutral and doesn't do things for the same reasons that anyone with a "real" alignment does. The ethics a TN person might set could be completely whack, but if the motive behind them is to cause neither great and evil harm nor goody goody good, then the person can retain a TN alignment and still technically "play" another alignment. That's why I've decided (just now) never to play TN again... too hard.

Anyway, my question is. What is your favorite class to play? And if you would please describe your favorite character to us, that'd be cool too.

Title: Re: Do you have a question for Leanthar?

Oh, I have another one. I've been thinking about maybe picking up Layonara a few times a week for a bit so as to keep my RP skills in order (that way I'm not horribly rusty by the time Spring rolls around). My concearn is that the character I'd like to make now, won't be around for very long once I get a sufficent amount of time to invest in him. So here's my question: Would you advise waiting to make a "long term" character until after any future plans for NWN 2 and Layonara get worked out? I know it's not final yet that we'll move over in 6-9 months (as you've already said) but I'd hate to have that be the case and end up without him when I go on my crazy playing schedule again.

I highly doubt we are going to go to NwN2 at all. I mean with all of the other work we are doing it will take a year to get right, if we can do it in that time.... I don't think you need to fear losing your character. No promises of course but I don't think you need to worry.

We are having a REAL DIFFICULT time getting any sort of time available to work on V3 but we are working on it when we can. Hmm. At one point I was really looking foward to the whole kindgom/pvp/tower ownership thing. But the more it was designed them more disheartened I became as I realized there was just no way I could do what I wanted to do in NwN. Not even remotely close really (due to the NwN networking/server lag issues) and because I don't have enough money to afford huge/powerful servers. So...not entirely sure at this point.

I think the changes (as they roll out--and it will take a long time to get them all done) is needed and will help to keep things moving foward.

My major concern is that NwN is nearly 5 years old so sadly we will lose people in the community to that--just by the nature of a game getting 'old'. Hopefully that doesn't happen as much as I fear, but time will tell.

I look foward to trying out some the evil and slight changes to pvp...but with great hesitations and reservations for the saftey/fun factor for the community as a whole...

Suggestion along with my next ?.

Perhaps, in limiting Evil, set it even more extreme than CN? Say, 10 months on the server and a 14th or 15th level character. (This wouldn't so much apply to characters who transitioned to evil before that point, just for starting characters.)

If you could ask anything from the players, what would it be? In terms of A) stuff related to the IG world B) stuff related to the OOC part of Layo like the boards and C) stuff regarding the RL parts of Layo like the servers and each other.

I don't really have a "favorite". I enjoyed Betrayal at Krondor, a few in the Ultima series, all of the Baldur's Gate stuff, Darklands, Fallout (both), Civilization (all of them--awesome game) and Realms of Arkania. If I had to choose it would probably be Realms of Arkania because it was a great RP game that made one think, and it was immersive as they had a lot of cool things in the game. But perhaps Civilization since I know I have personally played that game for at least a few hundred hours over the years.

Leanthar, you have been working on Layo in both pnp and cvg format for a long time now and Layonara has a truely unique fell history culture etc. However I can't help noticing that certain place names (Roldem coming into mind the quickest) seem to bear a strange familiarity to places in other fantasy worlds. Did you borrow any geography, histories etc from other fantasy universes? If so who and where (generally now) did you draw the most inspiration from

Yeah, in a large way--and that is what has caused us so much work in the past year. I love FR, Ravenloft as great pnp game settings. But also love them for reading, in addition to reading I enjoy Fiest, Dragonlance, and several others...so I would use basic ideas on things--and sadly I used names--bad Dan. It wasn't bad when it was just PnP gaming--but that is not what it is any more, by a long shot. So all of it has changed and been redefined but keeping the history of the past few decades.

Most inspiration....I don't know if there is a 'most inspiration' really. It depends on mood and the foucs of the day really.

Hmmm. Not sure. I love fried chicken, mashed potatoes (or potato salad) and corn...but I also love a lot of other food. My favorite meal is breakfast though.

If you had the choice of mind numbing endless happiness or the fact the you'll end up tolling in some god forsaken coal mine, what would you like more pie or cake?

As a different, more esoteric note, given that you indicated that you've played the BG series:  In Baldur's Gate II, what was your party of choice?  (Mine was Jai'mi (sue me, I wasn't creative back then), Minsc, Imoen, Nalia, Aerie, and either Anomen or Jaheria, as the med kit.)  (Oh, and Sarevok, after the expansion, just 'cause of the interactions.)

I don't remember all of them but the ones I do remember were, Minsc, Iomen, and Jaheria.

I used to play PnP games FAR more than video/computer games. Now-a-days I do not have time for PnP games (sure do miss them though!!).

New members? Not really much as they are new and are learning.

I don't care for 'know it all' and some times people can come across like that, including new members...but rarely do new members get under my skin. They are just trying to join a community and get in to the flow of things.

What folks from the gaming industry (or would it be industries, at this point) would you most be interested in sitting down to a light dinner and meaningful conversation with?
