Conflict with Spring Attack and Tumble
« on: October 04, 2009, 12:50:48 pm »
Description:My character Buddy Tenker has spring attack and 15 ranks in tumble. My problem is he incurs attacks of opportunity because he wears full plate armor and a heater shield which gives him a -1 tumble. Spring Attack should negate the need for a Tumble roll. Luckily nothing too bad has happened...yet.

Location: Caves near Battlehelm Moors and Misted Village

[Sun Sep 27 15:34:08] Equipped item swapped out.
[Sun Sep 27 15:34:16] Buddy Tenker uses Necklace of Shield I
[Sun Sep 27 15:34:16] You have multiple items equipped or spell effects active that give a Deflection AC bonus and the effects will not stack.
[Sun Sep 27 15:34:53] Buddy Tenker : Tumble : *failure* : (14 - 1 = 13 vs. DC: 15)
[Sun Sep 27 15:34:53] Attack Of Opportunity : Troll Brute of the Salty Marsh Tribe attacks Buddy Tenker : *hit* : (20 + 15 = 35 : Threat Roll: 15 + 15 = 30)
[Sun Sep 27 15:34:53] Buddy Tenker : Initiative Roll : 8 : (6 + 2 = 8 )
[Sun Sep 27 15:34:53] Troll Brute of the Salty Marsh Tribe damages Buddy Tenker: 13 (13 Physical)

[Fri Oct 02 15:11:55] Buddy Tenker : Tumble : *failure* : (7 - 1 = 6 vs. DC: 15)
[Fri Oct 02 15:11:55] Buddy Tenker : Tumble : *failure* : (7 - 1 = 6 vs. DC: 15)
[Fri Oct 02 15:11:55] Attack Of Opportunity : Misted Village Bandit attacks Buddy Tenker : *miss* : (1 + 16 = 17)
[Fri Oct 02 15:11:55] Buddy Tenker : Initiative Roll : 17 : (15 + 2 = 17)

First up, this would be a NWN bug, so there isn't anything we can do.

I can reproduce this when I run past hostile creatures who aren't "in" combat with me (yet), causing Tumble checks to be made, even though I've got Spring Attack. However, once the hostile creatures are "in" combat with me, I can't cause any further Tumble checks by moving around.

Bear in mind this was tested on a single player local module, whereas on a remote server, the effects of the network may influence the outcome.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Script Wrecked.

After I checked a bunch of my logs I would have to agree.  All the times I have had this problem was at the beginning with creatures who were not in combat with me yet.

Since this is an NWN bug can we at least put it in LORE under Spring attack and Tumble. That way people will be warned ahead of time.

The other side of tumble checks is that if you have say a -10 to tumble checks due to armor, the creature you start to engage in a fight Always gets an Attack of Opportunity when the two ram into each other at the start of a battle.

I suggest making this recommendation under the appropriate LORE forum, so it is not missed.

Not if you pace your character.

For updating LORE, does Spring attack by itself prevent those AoOs at the beginning of combat, or does it only happen with the combination of Spring attack and tumble?
And does it make a difference who wins initiative?

Just the combination of Spring Attack and tumble. He did not have the problem when he just had Spring Attack. I do not know about initiative and would not know how to test it.
