What is "thanks" for?

Is that "thank" thing supposed to be used when someone has made a good post or..?

It is a good way to say thank you to somebody without posting in the thread and taking it off topic or such things like that.

It sends a PM to the OP with a thanks from  the one that clicks on 'thanks'.
