Resistance rods and how they work

I've got a couple resistance rods I that I'm selling, but was curious to how exactly they work. It says 5 points of resistance, but I'm not sure if that's 5 points of damage, 5% of damage, or something else entirely. I'd like to be able to explain it if anyone else has questions about it IG, and I'd like to know for myself, maybe it's something that I would like to have on my own.

It'll reduce 5/- points of damage from sources specified on the rod.

 So for instance if you were to be hit for 20 damage from a Cold spell or ability, you'd only take 15 damage if that resistance rod protected you against Cold. It reduces exactly 5 damage each and every time you'd be hit with damage from that type.
