removing visual effects
« on: April 02, 2007, 06:38:01 pm »
Hello Gang,

Is there a way to remove a visual effect from an item without unenchanting it?  I just put a fire enchantment III on a new blade and I was going to leave the visual off.  I had no idea that enchantments III and IV had visuals built in.  I also have a sword with an enchantment II that I would like to remove the visual effect on.

Can this be done and how?

I figured out how to get rid of the light already ;) but now I need to get rid of the flames.

Thanks,
Merlin34

I have a memory of an old thread about this that concluded that the nature and power of the magic made it impossible to remove the flames (or dripping acid, etc) from the more powerfully enchanted weapons.

That memory is pretty old, and may be faulty, but I'm feeling confident about it anyway.

That is correct, as far as I last recall this can not be done through script.  There is a way to do it with a GFF Editor, but that sort of modification will probably never be done, or done for a quest reward or something (if applicable).

what about adding an "invisible" visual weapon effect to the hakpaks and then making a "wand of remove visual effect" which infact simply applies an invisible effect to the weapon?

I'm prett sure that wont work, as far as i know, Visual Effects are hard codded into the NWN system to appear at 1d6 dmg or more. so regardless having 1d6 fire damage produces the fire visual, 1d6 cold cold visual, etc. you would ahv eto do some major scripting to get rid of it.

Actually, that's not completely correct...

Layonara has a special attribute (attributes!) called something like "Visual Effect", which you can apply to weapons to... um... get the visual effects without having to fall back to default Bioware ">= 1d6"-logic.

This is why you can have a flamey sword with +1d8 acid damage. :)

I wish all Visual effects could just be Removed from all items.Light sabers in a fantasy game just doesn't make sense.

I don't see why it should be removed. It's an illusion, granted that illusions do give off roleplay effects whether it actually does something in combat or not...Intimidation, at the least.

Actually in most cases it's not an illusion - Your sword deals 1d6 fire damage because it's...well.. on fire :P

Well it's not a Layonara attribute - Bioware added it with HoTU if I reckon correctly. Regardless that's true, those visual effecs override the visuals applied from elemental damage.

Which is why I'm suggesting adding a visual effect that is invisbile and making a wand that applies that invisible effect - thus effectivly removing the effect caused by the 1d6+ ele damage.

Also.. I've seen somewhere in the Vault some other visual effects (like a blue glow and other neat stuff)... perhaps those could be added too?

I'd just like to see an invisible Vis.
