Considering a return
« on: June 16, 2015, 08:34:43 am »
So its been a few years but having never found a better server for RP by both players and DM's alike I am considering a return.I am well all is said and done butt a** lazy though so have a few questions....Are my characters still avilable and if so can I play them or will I need to create new ones?Is the stuff my characters still had still accessable by them?  Not expecting them to have retained a house or anything, more bank accounts and storage.Where/how is the best way to discover what has been happening while I was away.  I'm dyslexic so a wall of forum posts will make me go watch TV instead :D

Hey there! Welcome

Hey there! Welcome back-ish.

So to answer your questions quickly...

Your characters should still be available yes, provided you did not ask for any of them to be deleted. I just reinstalled this machine I'm typing on here, so I don't presently have the tools to go in and verify your vault, but the above statement should hold true. Of course, you may also create new ones if you wish.

Any house(s) once held by your character(s) have likely been returned to the market in a housing sweep based on player inactivity. This also implies that anything stored in player housing that belonged to your character(s) is also gone, but your bank accounts and any bank storage should still be intact.

As far as what has happened since last you were here, I'm not sure there's any sort of singular write-up available, however the short version is:

The war known as the Dragon Storm came to an end with mixed results. Molvaren remains in power in Kuhl and Kuhl has closed its borders. The corrupted dragon that was the source of the "dragon plague" has been destroyed, and a cure for the plague was formulated, produced and used. In a part of the Hilm Protectorate, a new nation/kingdom was formed and named the Sovereign Siphe Principality of Hilm, ruled over by Jaedon Siphe (a former general of Molvaren) in a rumored alliance with a powerful dragon named Ractrafieroz.

Since that time, there has been a period of relative peace, though of course with the occasional calamity. Most recently, a stellar conjunction involving Prunilla, Deliar, Shindaleria, Lucinda, Goran, Dorand and Aragen has taken shape directly overhead in the night sky (Lots of details on this plot can be found here). About the same time, people all over the world started discovering new-found magical abilities that they could neither command nor control and which would seem to manifest at random times. Soon after, people started disappearing. Eventually, it was noticed that there was a strong overlap between the people with new abilities and the disappearances. A while after that, some of the disappeared would return but in a state seemingly very close to death. Within a relatively short amount of time (sometimes hours, sometimes days), these people would die and every part of their bodies would reapidly degrade into a putrid pool of liquid, leading the affliction to become known as "Fastrot" and other colorful terms. As well, there has been an increased presence of dragons who have not yet achieved full maturity. These dragons have threatened small villages and settlements that are well away from established seats of civilized governmental power and have demanded tributes and/or loyalty/subservience from those whom they have chosen. As yet, there have been no sightings from nor attempted encroachments of large towns or cities. Though the exact nature of his involvement is not specifically known, it is strongly believed by some that Milara has at least some hand in the events of the day. The "veil" of blackness that covered Milara's realm in the Mountains of Madness has lifted, but the mystery remains as to what that might mean.

(Shameless plug: The finale of this plot is coming in about a month. If you are interested in joining, I strongly suggest meeting up with someone who has been deeply involved before the quest date)

From a technical side of things, the modules have been condensed into a single module on a single server, allowing easy travel to all parts of the world without changing servers. There are several interesting new and systems in place, including Fortune (XP alternative/supplement), mapping (save explored minimaps and pins), save/restore hot bars, an introduction system (your name and the names of other characters are unknown until introduced) and several others I'm not thinking of right now.  A new section of the Deep has been added and accessible from Mistone, and there have been a few other area changes all around.

*looks up* Yep...that's the short version...

Oh, also...friendly reminder about language here; I had to make a minor edit to your post.

Thank you Dorgy!

Ah yes, I need to remember to censor myself :P

I don't remember asking to have any of them deleted so in theory, they shouldn't be.......

New character is like work amd effort! *huffs like a teenager*

I'm assuming evil things like the soul mother and so on are still in place?  Where would one go to check counters for that?

Anything specific to do with Mist or Toran it would be helpful to know?

Any information on well known people who are still around from 'back in the day'?

Who has been hiding the chocolate?

Once in game any bind stone
« Reply #3 on: June 17, 2015, 06:34:52 pm »

Once in game any bind stone will tell you how many strands your character has lost (or has left?)

If your characters are linked to your forum account it should show you that sort of info, bank balance, etc too.

Welcome back

Once you get IG, be sure to check your journal. There are entires that have a ton of new and not-so-new but terribly useful commands listed in I think three or four journal entries. Orth has been busy (along with help from several others). And good to see you peek in. =)

Busy and all that!

Ok so I logged in, found the journal entries and tried to walk about.

It's like wading through treacle.  I wouldn't imagine trying to RP or worse, fight with it like this.  The commands are slow and laggy.  There is even lag on typing into the text box.

Anyone got any bright ideas on what the issue might be or ways I can solve it?

If there is lag typing into
« Reply #8 on: June 19, 2015, 08:25:33 am »

If there is lag typing into the text box, there is more likely an issue on the local PC than the server. To the best of my understanding, the chat bar there is a local thing. It only goes to the server when you hit the ENTER key, not while typing. If you're running Windows, it might be worthwhile to check your Task Manager and see if anything is using up a lot of CPU time. If you're on Linux or MacOS, I don't have any ideas for you.

If the delay is not in typing but in the time between hitting ENTER and when the result, there may be some network lag happening.  Try pinging xora.layonara.com to see if your ping times are unreasonable.

Unfortunately I can't sign on right now (or for several hours yet) to see if the server is responding like it should, but from prior experience and running a quest with about 15 people on it just a few weeks ago, the server is very responsive.

Also...had to look up "treacle".  Thanks for expanding my vocabulary!

Delay in both it appearing on
« Reply #9 on: June 19, 2015, 09:22:16 am »

Delay in both it appearing on the chat bar and after I hit enter.

NWN1 seems to run like a dog on my machine in general when SWTOR and NWN2 both run fine *shrugs* I am clueless on that.

It might not like my wireless keyboard and mouse.....

What counts as an unreasonable ping time?

Wait....there are people who don't know what treacle is?!?!?  How is that possible?!?!

Dorganath

Any pings consistently over
« Reply #10 on: June 19, 2015, 09:38:54 am »

Any pings consistently over 200ms are probably going to be unreasonable. Even 150ms on a consistent basis may result in sluggish game play, but the kinds of delays you're talking about would be more symptomatic of pings in excess of 400ms.

You might see if NWN runs sluggish in single-player mode too.

As far as treacle goes, we just call it something else. Molasses anyone?

I'll see if I can remember

I'll see if I can remember how to ping and find time to test NWN1 in single player mode.

Well you Americans have a long history of using English incorrectly *grins and ducks*

Heh, I was reading "fastrot" as "fast trot" when I'd come browse the forums. This sounded like a great thing to have. Thanks for the write-up of what's been happening.
