Dual Wielding Large Picks for Mining
    « on: July 29, 2005, 08:48:00 am »
I was reading up on the rules section and found I can dual wield wood axes - this helps rangers cutting trees a lot.

After mentioning the dual wield of wood axes to a friend who is a tree surgeon, who has experience of using all sorts of axes, billhooks and the like he told me that cutting branches is a 2-handed job. Even if the axes in question are 1 handed, balance and position would make dual wielding impractical

Well he did after he stopped laughing at me for being a geek.

This is a fantasy setting, so what the hell, why not dual-wield. If that is possible, though, how about dual-wielding pick axes? Seems a bit strange that one is in place and the other not. In "old" layonara I am led to believe dual-wielding was possible.

Was wondering if the same could be applied to mining. I appreciate this might make making weapons to easy. How about only allowing dual wield large picks with weapon focus - or even weapon specialisation? This would make it real expensive in feats - but for a realy dedicated miner - worth doing.

This is sort of a repost from CNR section, but I guess is is a general one too as I am kinda talking about issues of play balance etc.

If this has been dealt with before, I apologise for bringing it up again. I did search for the topic but couldn't find anything.

I made that bold for everyone's attention to drift to it quicker. It's really not a matter of rules. Every time there is a rule someone will try and find a way to bend it. I've done it too. Even if most of those times I'm not actually trying to do it. Basically, it comes down to the fact that regardless of what the "rule" is, someone is going to forget it or just ignore it. I'm not leaving myself out here. I'm guilty of it too.

There is no focus or specialization for heavy picks, since its a layo custom weapon.

The only people that will get more than 1 extra attack per round dual wielding are dual wielding fighters and rangers, and, it doesnt strike me that rangers need or should be very good at mining as it doesnt fit with their RP.

However, dwarves should get a +1 racial bonus to attack and damage vs ore ;)

Can't disagree with that.  My question has been answered.  Thanks.

Or, y'know, eliminate failures on 1's. That does nothing but cause my ire to grow. Stupid dwarf, couldn't hit the damn broadside of a cavewall if it had no exits!

I play a dwarf. It's hard not to.  http://www.layonaraonline.com/forums/photos/show-album.asp?albumid=264&photoid=3536  Keep in mind, that was before I gained an extra attack-per-round. So those four hits took like, 20 seconds. :P
