MAC support and bidirectional miragtion
« on: September 07, 2005, 12:21:00 pm »
I have a PC as my home system for games and that is what I have been using to play NWN. I travel for work quite a bit and my work system is a mac I would like to get nwn for mac if layonara is supported on the mac. If so what files do I need to migrate back and forth as I switch between systems.

thanks,
John

I am not a Mac user but as long as you have the haks I would assume that you dont need anything else.  All your character info is kept on the server vault.  I switch between my notebook and PC all the time.

Talan you use a Mac dont you?

how does that work? is it tied to my password? I did not think so. I assumed that the character ID was stored locally and the character file was stored on the server.

Cheers,
John

Nah. Everything about the characters you create in a server vault are stored exactly there. EXCEPT for anything you write in the personal journal space in NWN, that's stored in localvault.

So there will be no problem switching between the PC and the Mac. You just log on to the NWN multiplayer with your account and password, log on to Layonara, choose your character from the list and play. Simple.

ah I see, your multiplayer account is the unique ID used to locate your characters. Great thanks, John

MacSoft is where you get the software from or you can use your pc discs if you can get "The Open Knights" loading programs to work.
The Open Knights is freeware I think, just put "The Open Nights" in a search.

Yeah, you only really have to buy NWN and you can use your PC expansions just by creating the install folder hierarchy yourself (I didnt use open knights when i did this.)

However, I was trying to install the expansions from a platinum PC copy, not the original seperate expansison discs, and had a lot of trouble.  I ALMOST got it to work except that every time I started a game it would die... so.. yeah, that was a major problem ;)

I eventually just bought all the discs for mac (Which is still at full initial release price I believe.... which is ridiculous...)

I'm just the opposite -- I have a Mac at home and a PC laptop at work. I switch between the two all the time for Layonara. Other than the personal section of the journal, everything works great. I too bought the basic NWN from MacSoft, then used the PC version of SoU and HotU. As far as I know, you cannot install the original NWN for PC on a Mac and then install additional files to get it to work, though I'd be interested if you learn otherwise. The expansions for PC are about $8-9 US dollars on Ebay, new and unopened. The Mac versions are around twice that. There are instructions on the web about how to install on the Mac using the PC version, for example:

http://nwn.bioware.com/forums/viewtopic.html?topic=255437&forum=71&sp=45

I tried and never succeeded in getting the OpenKnights installer to work.

Good Luck
