I've recently been looking into buying a house, and of course the only one lefts are in the half-lake district, which is nice and all but expensive >.>

I was wondering - there are many houses of perma dead players, players that left and so forth... how long ussualy can such a house be left unclaimed before it returns to the market?

The target is 90 days of the house not being used. However, i do not believe that system has been put into place.

In addition, even though a house may belong to a character who is inactive or of a perm'd character, doesn't mean the house is not being used. There are many RP reasons for other placers to be in one house. Therefore, the house may still be occupied by active players.

To add to Twidget's comment...
We periodically review the houses of dead, gone and/or inactive players. Some of those are still in use by others and often get transfered. Others get put back on the market and made generally available again.
Houses on West are in very high demand. If you're lucky enough to find one for sale, you can be sure it will not last long.
Lastly, and I say this every time: There is absolutely no reason why you cannot buy a house with someone else to make it more affordable. Haft Lake is expensive, yes, but if you split that 3 or 4 ways, it becomes much more affordable.

What is the general rule of thumb for time period of transfering houses?  I share a house with someone that is inactive.  I only ask not because I want to take ownership of the house from him, but I still don't want to lose it because the person no longer plays.

I believe that 90 days is the general rule, however it can sometimes be longer then that, as there are other projects that sometimes over shadow the need to flush the houses back out on to the market.
