Good Monk Build?
« on: August 25, 2019, 10:13:57 pm »
I'll soon be starting a level 1 human monk (Barley), and I do not have experience with how to plan the build of a monk.

Any suggestions on good monk builds?

I'm considering a strength-based monk, though I think I've heard most people opt for a dx-based monk.
Thoughts or suggestions?

These are my ideas, thus far:

Feats: 1. Luck of Heroes, Dodge, 3. Weapon Focus Unarmed, 6. Blindfight, 9. Toughness, 12. Imp Crit unarmed  (not sure after that, maybe Power Attack and Great Cleave partially as pre-reqs for Overwhelming Crit later; or if kamas are useful then weapon focus kama, imp crit kama).

I'm assuming Mobility and Spring Attack are not needed if I have a high Tumble.  If Strength-based, I may need Expertise (and Int 13).

Skills:
Major: discipline, tumble
Minor: Concentration, heal, listen, lore, persuade, spellcraft

yes, scifibarbie, IKD very helpful! and luckily the monk gets those two KD feats for free at level 6. :)

(Never having played a monk...)

Armor class is the "neglected" side of any strength build. Doubly so with a Monk, given that they cannot wear any armor. The Monk AC Bonus finally compensates this at level 40 with the equivalent of Full Plate armor. In the meantime, while you are climbing the level ladder, at level 20, its only equivalent to Scale armor, and at level 10, Leather armor (good luck with that).

I would say this makes Expertise and Improved Expertise mandatory. Dodge and Toughness will also help.

Weapon Proficiency Monk doesn't give access to the Mighty throwing weapons (throwing axe and dart), so your missile support will be "meh" (no Strength or Dexterity bonus), magic items notwithstanding.

Regards Mobility and Spring Attack: the earliest Tumble auto-succeeds is at level 12; just something to be aware of.

Regards Luck of Heroes: Monks get all the primary saving throws. If you need to bump a feat, this might be a candidate.

I would tell you not to try and think too hard on the build of the character. If you do you will lose out on the the experience of playing and growing that character.  :)

With that said I would look at path of elemental balance: Fire.

KD and IKD are Str. based so don't rely on those too heavily if you go Dex build.

Mobility is your friend when you run from battle, (no Attack of opportunity). learn to use it. saved me many times. Just don't get surrounded or you will get pounded.
Overwhelming critical is an Epic feat (21+) and requires 5 pre-req feats and you must be Str based. Not  helpful if spawn is immune to crits also weapon dependent for multiplier.
There can be only One.

Silverblades - are you sure KD is strength-based? It's an attack role in nwn. So, if someone has high dx and weapon finesse, maybe it uses the dx? Or maybe not....
in any event, I'm going strength-based brawler for Barley. :)
