    Parry mode
    « on: July 26, 2005, 05:31:00 pm »
Does anyone know what happens if you are in parry mode and the creature that is attacking your character has less attacks per round than the character does, say it's 1 on 1. Does your character get to use your extra attacks or are they wasted?

a ver long time ago someone started a great thread on using Parry. It basically had everyhing I wanted to kow about it. If I wasn't dead tired I'd look. Do a search on Parry and look for it. A good read.

They are wasted. Parry mode is 100% defensive mode.

You will only attack on a riposte.

Parry is great 1v1, but that's not too often. Mobs tend to come in bunches.

Here's a bioware thread that answered some of it for me:

There are many others, such as this:

        This is another good post:

"in responce to whats wrong with parry, it has issues in that it will only attempt to avoid the first attack of a flurry.

As you start getting a few attacks a round, the attacks turn into flurries (ie, multiple attacks stringed very closely together). Now, suppose you have 5 attacks, flurry wise you are striking like so
        1,2
        3,4
        5

In parry mode as it is, your character will only EVER attempt to avoind the 1st, 3rd and 5th attack, the other attacks that fall in the flurry never even get a attempt."

        From another post:

"Each round in NWN is 6 seconds. Each round is further divided into 2 second segments.

When a character has many (4 or more) attacks per round, flurries start happening. A flurry is when the character makes two (or three, or *maybe* even four) combat animations in a row with no pause in between. So, let us examine a level 20 fighter. He gets..

        Flurry 1 (attack 1 and 2)
        attack 3
        attack 4

If you add in haste, it becomes..

        Flurry 1 (attack 1 and 2)
        flurry 2 (attack 3 and 4)
        attack 5.

Now..the reason why parry falls flat on its face. Given our level 20 fighter with haste..you will never, ever parry attacks 2 or 4. Ever. Won't even attempt to. If you increase it further to 7 attacks (dual wielding with haste) I believe we'd get

        Flurry 1 (attack 1, 2, 3)
        Flurry 2 (attack 4, 5)
        flurry 3 (attack 6, 7)

You will never, ever parry attacks 2, 3, 5 or 7. Regardless of how many attacks you have. Period, end of story. Hopefully, this is fixed in HotU. I've heard no mention of it so far."

Do as anyone know if it still does this?

          And what they want:

"Any of the following would effectively balance parry--
Parry checks AC after you miss a parry
Ripostes do not count towards number of attacks
You have a chance to parry every attack
You get attacks of opportunity, and you get an improved chance to critical on a riposte."

            This perked my ears up:

"Parry IS an awesome skill--but only if you take Improved Parry (int 13+) and Skill Focus Parry. Gloves of Swordplay (Greater or otherwise) help too. I've got a level 10 *ranger* that can hold his own against an Iron Golem just using parry. He ripostes everything but a natural 20 on Giants; so essentially, it gives him a near unhittable AC while putting a very small dent in his offensive capabilities.

Parry is only really worth taking, however, if you take those two feats above and (preferably) have a fairly high-dex character."
