This is not a joke folks. The United States Gov't, Corporate Conglomerates and Media Moguls want to privatize the internet.

There is also a new digital copyright act that is being set forth that if you get caught even _attempting_ to duplicate copywritten material you stand to face 10 years in prison.

Welcome to the United States of Police.... err Welcome to America, Have a nice day!

Guys....keep this civil and calm please. There's no need for lobbing political generalities (i.e Conservatives/Liberals/etc. are evil because A, B, and C). If this spirals into a flame fest, just assume the thread will be locked.

If this doesn't get defeated its more ammunition for those who support international oversight of the internet.  Or added impetus to speed up the rollout of Internet2.

It runs completely counter to the democratizing nature of the internet, allowing merit to dictate a website's capability of reaching an audience/customers rather than startup cash to pay for increased routing capacity.  It turns my stomach.

Plus, copyright legislation in the US is so borked right now its insane.  The most dangerous parts of the Digital Millenium Copyright Act have nothing to do with copying/sharing the files themselves (i.e. copyright violations).

This isn't just an American issue... recently the United Nations began moves to claim the internet as their property. The basic effect was to give direct control of information flow to each country. Top supporters were China, Cuba, Iran, Vietnam and a host of other countries who have an abhorent record for Civil Rights and Human Rights violations. Folks.. this isn't all "America's" fault... Yeah America houses the company that sets domain names, but as the artical points out... Canada is the first to do this and unfortunatly.. some people think that Canada can do no wrong socialy. America isn't perfect... the parties aren't perfect... Right now... don't waste time pointing fingers... American's... lets slap our congressmen for being short sighted... Fellow interneters... make sure your governments are paying attention to you...

Any how.. my point is.. this isn't the first attack nor will it be the last. Any institution or country that stands for freedom is and will be oppresive to any institution or country that is not free. By it's own existance as a source of freedom it is an anethima to socialism, despotism, communism, and many other "isms". Remember.. there are many powerful countries and people who desire to control the flow of information for their own mechinations.

Any how... people aren't dumb.. spread light on this bill and I can tell you right now that American's won't go for this... my friends and i have already written our Senator... I recommend you American's do the same.
