Question about Monstrous monster type
« on: April 23, 2006, 06:35:34 pm »
I am curious about the monster type of "Monsterous".  I saw a weapon recently that had a bonus against "Monstrous."  I looked in the rules that I could find and found a monster type called "monstrous humanoid."  The following is a list of monsters that fell into that category:
Centaur, Derro, Doppleganger, Gargoyle, Grimlock, Hag, Harpy, Hobgoblin, Medusa, Minotaur, and Sahuagin.

So two questions.

1)  Is this the type of monster that the enhancement vs. Monstrous refers to?

2)  If so, are there any other custom monsters in Layo that fall under that type?

Thanks.

In NWN, "Monstrous" primarily means Trolls.  It might include Harpies, Medusas, and Minotaurs, but I've never tried it out.  Derro count as dwarves, dopplegangers as shapechangers, gargoyles as magical beasts, hobgoblins as goblinoids, etc.

So if you have a weapon that does damage versus monstrous, expect it to be most useful against trolls.

That they are, Pan, but they seem to fall under Monstrous in NWN.  Unless I am very terribly off.  Which happens sometimes.

Then I would have to beg the same question that Xandor has.  What monsters fall under the "Monstrous" category?

And also, to Xandor:  where did you find that listing?  because I assumed you found it in connection to PnP information.

Then I would have to beg the same question that Xandor has.

Psst!  Begging the question is a logical fallacy where the proposition to be proven is assumed in one of the premises.  It's related to circular argument.  It actually has nothing to do with asking questions.

I'm not in a parliamentary debate here.  I'm simply "begging" that my question be answered.  My sincerest apologies for using said phrase in the incorrect context.  Then again, I am Texan, and we Texans purposefully use things out of context all the time...  oh, for the love of idiom, old and new.

Shouldn't you be begging the answer, then?

According to the D20 database, monstrous creatures include: Harpy, Doppelganger, Gargoyle, Derro, Hag, Centaur, Grimlock, Minotaur, Scorpionfolk, and Monstrous Insects/Bugs (d20srd.org)

I got the info from the D&D 3.5 ruleset but it sounds like it is very similar to NWN.

Pankoki,
Is the list above correct for Layo?  Are there any other custom monsters in Layo of this type?  Thanks.

I think the source of the mistaken ideal is the fact that the sword in question has a description involving the use of such weapons against an incursion of trolls.

I am not sure about the description and the trolls.  I just saw +something "vs. Monstrous"  and didn't know what that meant or how useful it was.  I am just trying to determine if such a thing would be worth seeking and worth the increase in level limit as opposed to attaching a fire enhancement or such.

As far as the toolset is concerned, Harpies, Minotaurs, Sea Hags, Medusae, and Stingers are the only creatures with the "Monstrous" race.  Insects fall under "Vermin", while Doppelgangers = Shapeshifters and Gargoyles fall under Magical Beasts.

I made he sword in question, the Last Defense.  It has an enchantment bonus vs monstrous humanoids.  It also has a nice story about its history of fighting trolls and how its particularly good against them.

Its just wrong.  At the time I was convinced trolls were monstrous humanoids for some reason.

Trolls are, as pan stated, giants.  The dilema (and reason I didn't just change it to + vs giants) is that TONS of stuff is giants which would make the sword quite a bit better than I intended it to be.

At some point I'll change the sword in some way or modify the story.
