Title: Possible PC Config
Post by: Krell Himmler on February 28, 2008, 02:44:10 am
Any hardware buffs throw me some advice:

I'm thinking, E8400 duo (intel): $302

Inno3D nVidia 8800GTS OC 512mb PCI-E 2.0 video card, 2x DVI, video out, 128 stream processors: $473

Corsair Twin3X 2048MB (2x 1024) (ddr3 1333mhz): 473

Asus P5KC LGA775 P35 board, DDR2/DDR3, 1333FSB, 2x PCI-E x16, PCI-E x1, 3x PCI, 4x SATA, GigaLAN, Audio: $201.30

WD Raptor 150gb 10,000 rpm: 280.50

Total: 1750 roughly, although I'll get it wholesale, so probably about 80% of that price. (All in AUD)

Any suggestions?

Here's my suggestions;

I hate intels, so I won't even comment on that.
Ditch the graphics card, go for either a pair of XFX 8800GT cards or a single BFG 8800GTX OC2. The GTX line eat power, last I heard it was something like 189w as compared to the 8800GTs 84-89w!
I'd ditch the motherboard for a 680i Striker too, can't beat a Striker for an intel chip.
Other than that, the RAM is sweet, but an expensive choice. It'd probably be easier to drop a few mhz and take on a pair of Corsair XMS2 instead - it'd save a lot of money.

I'd make sure you have a good power supply too, something in the 580W range, modular is always a gigantic plus. The Hiper series of modular PSUs is easily the best and you can pick up about a 700W one of those for a rediculously cheap price.

As for the CPU though, I've heard the 3.6ghz C2Ds are actually good and outperform current AMDs. Might be worth looking into that more.
